Gavin Newsom threatens intervention if Trump kills Biden's $7.5K EV tax credit

Gov. Gavin Newsom is already planning on pushing back against President-elect Donald Trump's policies derailing the current administration's green energy push.

President Joe Biden implemented a tax credit of up to $7,500 to incentivize the purchase of greener vehicles, but Trump is reportedly planning to ax the tax credit when he assumes office, sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

Newsom, in a statement Monday, revealed that he will offer the same EV rebate for Californians in the case that Trump gets rid of the credit.

"Consumers continue to prove the skeptics wrong – zero-emission vehicles are here to stay," Newsom said in a statement.

"We will intervene if the Trump Administration eliminates the federal tax credit, doubling down on our commitment to clean air and green jobs in California. We’re not turning back on a clean transportation future — we’re going to make it more affordable for people to drive vehicles that don’t pollute," the governor added.

The Golden State EV credits would be funded by a relaunch of the Clean Vehicle Rebate Program, the state's electric car incentive program that closed in November 2023, according to a press release from the governor's office.

The announcement comes just one week ahead of Newsom's emergency special session that he called after the election to bolster the blue state's legal response to any future attacks from the incoming Trump administration.

However, Newsom has a long history of hitting back against Trump's policies, having launched more than 100 lawsuits against the president-elect during his first administration alone.

He shouldn't be if he's actually interested in Tesla's profitability.

Of course I'm not convinced he is.
Wouldn’t be great for Tesla, but possibly devastating for other EV makers. This move was either initiated or promoted by Elon.

One thing you have to admit, they are being transparent (motives, intentions, beneficiaries, etc).

Not the first time California has heard that empty threat.
It's not an empty threat. Trump and his ilk are itching to punish anyone who doesn't agree with them. Capping SALT deductions during his first term was a direct assault on blue state taxpayers. He tried to limit disaster relief to California. Others who no longer remain tempered that particular attempt. They see blue states and their voters as the enemy.

You seem upset that the blue state taxpayers are now paying their fair share.

You seem ignorant to anything and everything involving economic and taxation issues, but then I'm not surprised.

Your Dear Leader promised to reverse that particular law during this election cycle. Do you believe him when he promises shit just to get elected? If so he must also be thinking he screwed them over the first time. No?

He might. He might not. No big deal either way.

Hopefully house republicans like McClintock, Kiley, and Issa will do their job and advocate against that.

The people who will be running DOGE are crooks. Both Elon and Vivek. They will look out for themselves first along with Trump.

Bigger crooks than the Democrats DEI consultancy grafts, Democrats suing the federal government for profit grafts, unfettered illegal immigration for profit grafts?

When did you suddenly start caring about corruption? Were you asleep the last 4 years?

I'm looking forward to federal funds being withheld from California because they insist on being a sanctuary state.
Hmm….so threatening a state that provides way more to this country financially than it takes….bold move, let’s see how it plays out.

Traditionally blue states are not the “takers” when it comes to federal handouts…

Good for him. But restated slightly differently…

“We think there should be subsidies for something we think consumers are demanding on their own, but really we dont want to provide that subsidy ourselves unless we can’t get the rest of the country to pay for it.”

(Side note: not sure why this is all couched in the language of “threats”).

If Newsom can make them cost effective enough, perhaps the homeless can just poop inside the EV's?,.. Then once they're full they can just be towed away.
