George Kittle's Catch

Love Kittle and the 49ers, but ...

I resisted the week 2 trade of Zach Ertz for Mike Evans because I had a hunch George Kittle might be a TE1 in the making... damn. I’m not the best fantasy football manager, but trusting the gut on that one keeps getting better.

Did C.J. lose his job tonight?

Well, CJ had a great game against the Packers, outplaying Aaron Rodgers until the final minutes when Rodgers engineered another last-minute, game-winning drive. CJ hung in there against the undefeated Rams, and but for the 49er defense allowing a TD in the waning seconds last week, CJ would have led SF to a win. Beathard played the whole game, despite injuring the wrist on his throwing hand along the way.

So the kid who replaced CJ last night played well, but it might be worth pointing out that it was against the worst team in the NFL, one that everyone knows was barely going through the motions for a lame-duck coach.

Packers, Rams, Raiders.... hmmm. I suspect Shanahan and his staff know the difference in the level of competition and may take that into account in evaluating their quarterbacks. And so I have a feeling CJ's job is safe. Of course, that's just IMHO.

CJ is tough but just doesn't have it at the next level.
He won't be playing again for the 49ers unless new guy gets hurt.

If you have the stomach for it, there is a slow-motion replay of their RB going to the ground. He puts his right arm down to catch his fall. Snap! Very reminiscent of Joe Theisman’s leg Injury. Season over for that young man.

There are several replays of it in the thread on Twitter if you click through the highlights above.

It was one game against the worst team in the NFL, pump the brakes. You're sounding like Iowa State fans here.

And the Packer game was one game as well.
Care to comment on his performance against the mighty AZ Cardinals?

I love the guy and his toughness. Has a decent arm too.
Unfortunately his pocket awareness is non-existent, he holds the ball way too long, and can't see the blitz coming.

If CJ's injury forces him out a couple more games and the new guy performs well then CJ is probably the backup until the new guy gets hurt by their crappy pass blocking.

I like him a lot and wish him well. But he does have several things to work on if he wants to stay in the league for a while. It would be interesting to see how he would be performing with better tools and blocking around him than what the 49ers have. He's on a team that gives him a great chance to get playing time, but doesn't give him a great chance to succeed in that playing time. Yes in the Packers game he threw that last interception to end it. But the 2nd half offensive play calling and the defense is who lost that one, not him.

The Green Bay and Arizona defenses have much higher pressure and sack percentage than Oakland. The defense last night is the worst in the league at generating pressure. One of those is not like the other.

So you're saying perhaps CJ doesn't do well with pressure and sack percentage defenses.
That's exactly what I'm saying too!

Uh, yeah. There's about 3-5 QBs on the planet who do. That's why they're elite. CJ will never be elite, but he's definitely a capable backup and spot starter in the league.
