I see so many people chew on The G-man for some of his antics. Truth is he is his own person and has his own personality. He more than likely motivates himself with his lampoons. I used to be like a of of people and spoke out on how I disliked those kinds of actions.

Does the G-man have some growing up to do? Of course, he is a kid in college and maturing as a human being. He is also very successful in his style. If you can't respect a guy for saying what he thinks, who would you rather respect? Most of us are too timid to say what we think. Gilman thinks he is the best and tells us so. I can appreciate that.

Gilman gets more ink for wrestling than anyone else in the nation. If you visit the other wrestling forums they talk more about Gilman than their own wrestlers. They trash him like no other. Quite the hypocrites I would say.

If Gilman was a meek sheep he would not be the wrestler he is today. It' not how he's geared up. For those that don't like his antics and bash him for it. You are just not understanding what the G-man is all about. Winning is what drives him. I kind of like that attitude. That attitude is going to serve him well as travels through the journey of life. If we had 10 Gilman's on the team we would be National champions.

Being disrespectful to an opponent and team during introductions should not happen. I'm not a big fan of it during a match but can understand it and accept it because it is competition. Gilman is a heck of a wrestler and the front runner to win the 125 national championship - no doubt about that.

To all the fans who are going to bitch about this post...don't complain if he gets beat at BigTens or NCAA's and everyone not a hawkeye fan is cheering. He has earned that all by himself.

Count me among those who dissaprove of Gilmans attitude this season. I feel it is probably a split among fans who like or dislike some of the moments he has had this year. I feel most of us are cheering for him to win the title though.

News flash.... if the Kem Dawg or BS wins a national championship there will be haters. Those guys are more of what you are looking for in prototypical behavior? If the G-man gets beat it won't be because he pulled a spoof and went into another teams huddle.

Why do you disprove of his attitude? Is it because he is not normal, or some book says he needs to conduct himself in such a way? All really good competitors think they are the best. They just won't say it!!!!!

Every Iowa loss is cheered...Wally Cleaver would get hated on

I shouldnt say attitude as much as it is a few instances of poor sportsmanship that I personally wish he wouldnt do. His attitude is fierce and dedicated to winning which is what we want. Its just my personal opinion and preference to show better sportsmanship is all. I love the way Kemmerer handled himself with the Nebraska kid.

I disapprove of his lack of sportsmanship. I think it is an excuse to say he is "just being himself". There are a lot things I'd like to do but I restrain myself because it would be completely disrespectful to others. That is called emotional intelligence, maturity, and being a functioning member of society. I also think it is poor leadership. He is a fantastic wrestler and I wish he would let that do the talking.

What I find ironic about all the gopher fans who hate and rip on Gilman is these same ppl love/loved Brock Lesnar. At least Gilman isn't cheating the sport and poking himself in the a$$

(Not for you Madtown) Can we stop infantalizing 18-24 year old men by using the he's just a kid argument as an excuse for behavior whethe you support him or not? They are liable for their words and actions...just as much as I am. I may call them "kid" but that's a reference to age, not accountability.

Ok...that said, Tom knows this kid better than all of us together and said he is a team leader who hold his teammates accountable on and off the mat. Most importantly, he holds himself accountable. When he gets beat fair and square, he shakes the guy's hand and runs off the mat. To the guy who put him down 8-0? Nothing but kind words and respect...even after pinning him. The only time I have gotten pissed at him was the Mizzou match...

Thomas is one of the best wrestlers in the country despite not bring a complete wrestler. He very rarely turns from top and if you would have polled 9/10 people five years ago, they would have said Clark would be the better wrestler. However, mentally, Gilman has made himself into the best on this team. More offense, more bonus and is everything we want in an Iowa wrestler. If we had ten who approach wrestling like him, nobody would bother to show up in March.

Somebody brought up Molinaro on another thread. Frank didn't have DT's talent or Ed's physical gifts...dude is close to being a midget. But you know going out there you are going to get 6 or 7 mins of a fight. Less talented guys don't get that way by listening to Yanni in the back while doing deep breathing meditation and visualizing world peace.

It's a combat sport and Gilman thinks of it as a battle from the time he walks into the locker room until when he leaves. It works for him. BTW, if a guy wants to go the Yanni route and he wins, I'm good with too.

Good grief people. Bitch and moan that we just aren't aggressive anymore and don't have the attitude like the "Glory Days". The "Iowa Style" mentality. Have you forgotten how the Brands Bros wrestled?

Now we have a guy that talks and wrestles with an attitude and yet we still bitch.

I give up. BTW, that was one of the best matches I've seen in a LONG time. I'll never forget it. My voice still hasn't recovered.

I love Gilman, phuckers tough!

I personally don't mind his antics. He does bring a certain amount of pazazz to wrestling. And frankly wrestling needs a bit of attention these days.

My only cripe w Gilman was the Waters incident, where he was intentionally trying to hurt Alan.

I don't think he was intentionally trying to hurt Waters...He was going to lose and tried everything to get out. It was illegal and wrong, but not intentional IMO.

I don't buy that at all Chief. It's a another version of a slam. Gilman wasn't an inexperience pee-wee.

Frustrated for sure, he was getting ride like a pony.

I think he purposely went back if that's what you mean but I don't think he was thinking, "If I can't win, then he can't wrestle." I think he was frustrated and didn't want to lose.

Don't be fooled by that hoodlum Thomas Gilman. Moments after this picture was taken, Gilman pushed Clark down a flight of stairs at NCAAs, cementing his spot as Alpha Bully of the Iowa wrestling team, and injuring Clarks shoulder in the process (the only reason he lost to Garrett). Forcing the Brands Bros to crown him undisputed leader and captain of the Iowa wrestling team. An unfortunate side effect is that Clark reinjured the shoulder this season that Gilman maimed.

To be honest, the only reason the Brands allow this kind of nonsensical tom-foolery is because Gilman has already threatened every single member of the coaching staff. They're scared because of his expansive military strategic knowledge, and he already made an example out of Clark. Essentially Gilman is most likely running the Iowa wrestling team as a dictator. At least thats the most logical opinion I can form after gathering information on this Gilman character from all wrestling boards.

I call them Shenanigans or Tomfoolery. The antics of a rapscallion!

Gilman is an incredible wrestler. He's determined. He's focused. He's confident ... He's one of the best ...

The other "stuff" (specifically, running into the opponent's huddle immediately comes to mind) ... I'm not a big fan of it ... To each his own ...

I think the "best" intimidation is sticking your guy on his own mat ... Now that's good stuff ...

I did not catch if anyone knew what Gilman said to the minnesota kid at the end of the match. Guess I have not been current on post match stuff from that.

Yeah. My first nationals (2000, St Louis), mom and I were at the McDonald's (I think in Union Station) Friday morning. I hadn't had much exposure to non-Iowa wrestling and what other people thought of us, and we chatted about the booing of Iowa wrestlers and how nobody else got booed. An Okie St fan (she had to have been in her 70s) leaned over and said, "You guys just don't know how much you're hated, do you." Uh, thanks...

And the crowd went crazy when Matt McD lost in Philly (even in DM when everybody knew something was wrong, even if they didn't know what), and he is an angel.

I felt the same when I was there in 2015...I believe it was Jebba who lost in the first round and the place went nuts. I knew, but then you don't really until you hear it.

When I was in St. Louis when Ness beat Dennis the place went nuts especially isu section which I thought was very ironic because with that win Ness just stole the hodge from Varner. Everybody wants us to lose. It all started with Gable and the attitude he brought. Everybody complains about the coaches jumping around and going "crazy" Its called passion and I LOVE it. Gilman is old school, its part of the chess game he plays. No different than Ramos stare. I could go on and on about how Hawk wrestlers and their antics ON the mat but its just a mental game. If you have had a chance to talk with Gilman some of you would be shocked what type of person he is....

Are you deaf or naive? The nation throws a party whenever any Hawkeye wrestler loses. Find some video of Wells Fargo when the injured Matt McDonough got beat. Especially pathetic was how happy the Iowa State fans were. His loss was the loudest moment of the tournament until DSJ won the title.

Nice, so spot on its unbelievable.

The problem is that we are 20 odd years removed from the Brands brother's careers and our ever softening country has even less ability than it did then to handle something that "might be" considered offensive or politically incorrect. A little shove at the end of the period on the edge of the mat? Well holy Sh*t, we had better call in a therapist for the young man to meet him after the match. A little smack talking during the middle of, or after 7 minutes of what most non-wrestlers would call hell? Oh no, we can't handle that either.

If people can't handle a little bit of aggressiveness at a wrestling meet, then maybe they should go watch swimming or gymnastics.

Go Hawks!!

Love Gilman. I can't wait see what does, but I find myself looking away when I know it's coming. Then I go rewatch it 20 times and have a good laugh. However, believing in the sanctity of marriage, I am little disappointed in him for screwing HawkwardEncounter's wife.
