(Not for you Madtown) Can we stop infantalizing 18-24 year old men by using the he's just a kid argument as an excuse for behavior whethe you support him or not? They are liable for their words and actions...just as much as I am. I may call them "kid" but that's a reference to age, not accountability.
Ok...that said, Tom knows this kid better than all of us together and said he is a team leader who hold his teammates accountable on and off the mat. Most importantly, he holds himself accountable. When he gets beat fair and square, he shakes the guy's hand and runs off the mat. To the guy who put him down 8-0? Nothing but kind words and respect...even after pinning him. The only time I have gotten pissed at him was the Mizzou match...
Thomas is one of the best wrestlers in the country despite not bring a complete wrestler. He very rarely turns from top and if you would have polled 9/10 people five years ago, they would have said Clark would be the better wrestler. However, mentally, Gilman has made himself into the best on this team. More offense, more bonus and is everything we want in an Iowa wrestler. If we had ten who approach wrestling like him, nobody would bother to show up in March.
Somebody brought up Molinaro on another thread. Frank didn't have DT's talent or Ed's physical gifts...dude is close to being a midget. But you know going out there you are going to get 6 or 7 mins of a fight. Less talented guys don't get that way by listening to Yanni in the back while doing deep breathing meditation and visualizing world peace.
I am beyond impressed wight eh way he wrestles. I can't believe he did not get taken down by Piccinnini in that match. He finishes every time he gets to a leg. What more can be said about him as a wrestler. He is a beast.
The antics, while they are not classy, they are not really over the line either. Is he going to take over for Mother Teresa? -no! Is he going to be an admired and respected member of society? You bet! In the end who cares and what business is it of ours? I know it is a message board and we like to talk, but it is not for me to judge.
It's a combat sport and Gilman thinks of it as a battle from the time he walks into the locker room until when he leaves. It works for him. BTW, if a guy wants to go the Yanni route and he wins, I'm good with too.
