Gilman and his capers.

Are you deaf or dumb? The nation throws a party whenever any Hawkeye wrestler loses. Find some video of Wells Fargo when the injured Matt McDonough got beat. Especially pathetic was how happy the Iowa State fans were. His loss was the loudest moment of the tournament until DSJ won the title.

I never understood that reaction at Wells. I really don't know how anyone could dislike McD. He will always be one of my favorite Hawkeyes of all time. ISU fans are the worse. A bunch of nerdy haters.

(Not for you Madtown) Can we stop infantalizing 18-24 year old men by using the he's just a kid argument as an excuse for behavior whethe you support him or not? They are liable for their words and actions...just as much as I am. I may call them "kid" but that's a reference to age, not accountability.

Ok...that said, Tom knows this kid better than all of us together and said he is a team leader who hold his teammates accountable on and off the mat. Most importantly, he holds himself accountable. When he gets beat fair and square, he shakes the guy's hand and runs off the mat. To the guy who put him down 8-0? Nothing but kind words and respect...even after pinning him. The only time I have gotten pissed at him was the Mizzou match...

Thomas is one of the best wrestlers in the country despite not bring a complete wrestler. He very rarely turns from top and if you would have polled 9/10 people five years ago, they would have said Clark would be the better wrestler. However, mentally, Gilman has made himself into the best on this team. More offense, more bonus and is everything we want in an Iowa wrestler. If we had ten who approach wrestling like him, nobody would bother to show up in March.

Somebody brought up Molinaro on another thread. Frank didn't have DT's talent or Ed's physical gifts...dude is close to being a midget. But you know going out there you are going to get 6 or 7 mins of a fight. Less talented guys don't get that way by listening to Yanni in the back while doing deep breathing meditation and visualizing world peace.

I am beyond impressed wight eh way he wrestles. I can't believe he did not get taken down by Piccinnini in that match. He finishes every time he gets to a leg. What more can be said about him as a wrestler. He is a beast.
The antics, while they are not classy, they are not really over the line either. Is he going to take over for Mother Teresa? -no! Is he going to be an admired and respected member of society? You bet! In the end who cares and what business is it of ours? I know it is a message board and we like to talk, but it is not for me to judge.

It's a combat sport and Gilman thinks of it as a battle from the time he walks into the locker room until when he leaves. It works for him. BTW, if a guy wants to go the Yanni route and he wins, I'm good with too.

Love Gilman. I can't wait see what does, but I find myself looking away when I know it's coming. Then I go rewatch it 20 times and have a good laugh. However, believing in the sanctity of marriage, I am little disappointed in him for screwing HawkwardEncounter's wife.

Pics?...........

I could not believe that reaction either..A friend of mine who was with me (gopher fan) giggle than laughed when Matt got beat in the wrestle back, pissed me off and I let him know and now some folks get mad at what Gillman does wtf no wonder this county is a mess mostly all "snowflakes" walking around.

I'll agree to disagree on this. I was there and seen Gilmans immediate indifference to Waters.
I was there also and in the room the next few days. Incident would never have happened in the first place if the official had not allowed Waters to hang instead of wrestle...not even a stalemate. If he had really wanted to hurt Waters he would have slammed him a lot harder than he did.

Meh, I don't how much harder you can slam a kid on your back other then jumping backwards to land on said kid.

The fact was Gilman needed to defend legs better, period. Waters exposed a weakness in Gilmans game over and over. Gilman couldn't/wouldnt adjust during the match. Frustrations boiled over and the table was turned on him

When I was in St. Louis when Ness beat Dennis the place went nuts especially isu section which I thought was very ironic because with that win Ness just stole the hodge from Varner. Everybody wants us to lose. It all started with Gable and the attitude he brought. Everybody complains about the coaches jumping around and going "crazy" Its called passion and I LOVE it. Gilman is old school, its part of the chess game he plays. No different than Ramos stare. I could go on and on about how Hawk wrestlers and their antics ON the mat but its just a mental game. If you have had a chance to talk with Gilman some of you would be shocked what type of person he is....

FYI it was in Omaha

But to your point of ISU cheering against Iowa they way they did during that tournament. (Carl)

Because of that, I never cheer for any ISU wrestler ever. I like that ISU is currently in the weeds and tbh hope they never come out

I was in St. Louis on floor level when Metcalf got beat and the place exploded. I have to say hearing that still haunts me to this day. The only good thing that night was that in the end I got to remind all the vaginas around me that we were still national champs that night...

Iowa wrestlers are booed and hated by anyone not an Iowa fan. Gilman's mindset and attitude does not increase the boos etc. It's similar to someone saying, "We can't do that, the terrorists will hate us more." When a group is committing suicide bombings and sawing off heads, how does one equate being hated more?
Thomas Gillman encapsulates everything that made Iowa the dynasty under Gable. I wish there was more like him. I refer to the whole package: Dedicated hard worker, intensely focused, tough mindset, aggressive, with an I fear nobody and I don't give s**t attitude.

AK wasn't predicting that. He was quoting HurricaneWrestling who appeared to be writing facetiously.
Not sure who was quoting who but I think G-man will be working on his leg defense in the next few weeks. You should see results like we saw between Sorenson and Retherford on keeping the legs out. Lizak is not Retherford by a long shot, and without the leg ride G-man pins him again.

I agree the only thing Lizak did was ride tough. The rest is history.

Wrestling with an "attitude" like this is something that you can only do if you are the BEST. Think of how many threads or posts within threads have been created here when a wrestler from another school shoots off at the mouth (particularly, if the rant is about a Hawkeye) while they are not ranked in the Top 3, failed to AA, or aren't ranked at all. When you are the best though you become the heel. The person or team that everyone LOVES TO HATE. This has historically been Iowa. Things have changed in the Post-Gable Era however.

We have had some individuals who had that Coast to Coast hate since Gable left, but really the program has lost that cache a little bit, really since the "transfer class" that featured perhaps the most "Brands-like" persona since the Brands, in Metcalf. Everyone hated the Brands, the were amazing. Everyone hated Mocco, he was awesome. Everyone hated Metcalf, he was awesome. Then a change happened and the wrestlers that people hated weren't hated just because they were dominant winners, but because of off the mat twitter rants, stare downs, and questionable interviews. Everyone hated Ramos, he was excellent. Everyone hated Evans, he was good. Now we have Gilman.

All I know is we are hearing a lot of cheering when a Penn State wrestler losses. Very comparable to the Iowa losses cheers. One has to wonder if Penn State wins the next 3 titles like a lot of people are assuming do they take over the mantle completely?

If GG can tell me AKHUNTER is good for it I'll bet him that $500.00.

I didn't read the message on the Mat. Seems like some confusion as to who was offered to make a bet. However, if it was AKHUNTER, I can tell you he is a stand up guy. He was recently elected to the Alaska Wrestling Hall of Fame and built an amazing program on an island. He is legit.

If I was on the Minnesota team the other day and wasn't a starter I would of decked him. His antics and the team finishing third or fourth every year must make you all feel like winners. I have lost a lot respect of your coaches just for allowing a wrestler to be that way. As for how other school fans feel for Iowa, don't worry your still #1 in the hate department. With Little G going after this year, Tom needs to go after Downey to replace Little G antics.

You are wrong regarding the Penn State cheers. There were several times a PSU guy lost and you wouldn't have known he wrestled. You would have thought the New York Knicks won the NBA title after Meyer got knocked to the back side early. For some reason the opposing fan is still obsessed with Iowa. That will continue to slowly change as long as we aren't winning titles. Right now it isn't even close though. I think you were trying a little too hard.

Since when do we have to worry about saying all the right things?? Hell Gilman talks smack ...then he backs it up. He is the emotional leader of this team and we all crave and clamor for the OLD IOWA style...being purely aggressive just attacking and attacking and using the heavy hands to set up a good blast double ! Maybe he isnt the silent assassin type kid but he certainly gets the crowd into the match and what a way to kick start a dual meet. It will be rough until Lee steps into that spot in 2 years...we are all a little spoiled. But we ask these men to be putting it all out there and push themselves past the normal limits ...it becomes very emotional and sometimes those emotions boil over. But if he shakes hands and shows dignity and respect then what more can we expect? I am tired of all of this Politically correct crap...its life...get to the front of the pack or all you will ever see is a bunch of dogs A$$E$ during your life

Gilman talk and how he acts aren't how I'd want my kid to act but he's not my kid. If he wants to do it that's his choice.

My only question to everyone who enjoys it and says how great it is, how many of you are saying how dumb Berger is for his actions after the midlands?

Are you really incapable of discerning the differences? Serious question

I get the differences, yeahh gilman can back it up on the mat most the time, yeah berger is posting crap on twitter to make himself a bigger idiot everyday. My question is if gilman was at Nebraska would those people still be calling Gilman's actions fun and just being tough or would they being saying he's a meat head or how he acts like a tool? I see guys say how Nickal is tool for how he acts after a win or how berger is a tool for calling out a coach but when gilman does it than everyone just needs to get over it. What makes it ok for Gilman to do it but not others to do it other than the color of his singlet? If Gilman had been wearing the Missouri singlet and waters the iowa one would it still have been ok to act that way when frustrated? If gilman was a Minnesota wrestling running into an Iowa huddle would it be ok? If he is ok with how he acts that's his choice, but for everyone to say how great it is if the singlet wasn't an iowa one would you still think it was great, or would you say he acts like an idiot?

Why do you post over here? Better question, why do we allow you to post over here? I normally don't mind your little douche bag comments since they are normally harmless and you obviously crave the little bit of attention these boards give you, but when you come over here, on a thread where many people are disagreeing with each other about the topic and you say something like, "must make you all feel like winners," you are simply trolling.

You want to try and be funny and say cute things so people like your posts, and that makes you happy in your sad world, by all means knock yourself out, but save your troll posts for your own board, where no one will ever read them, cuz over here, your are basically doing what you are accusing Gilman of doing, trash talking to get attention, and If I "wasn't a starter,"....

Being a great wrestler and conducting yourself with class aren't mutually exclusive. Barry Davis. Jim Zalesky. Troy and Terry Steiner. Chad Zaputil.

There's a fine line between being a brash rebel and being an a-hole. Not saying Gilman has crossed that line either. When I was young I was a big fan of Muhammad Ali and John McEnroe because they were braggarts that backed it up. Now I'd rather see everything proven on the mat (or the tennis court or boxing ring). I've gained a greater appreciation for the art of humility.

The comments about snowflakes and political correctness are irrelevant. You don't have to be a liberal or conservative to have an opinion about what you respect in people and what you don't.

I hope Gilman wins an NCAA title. We probably won't hang out together afterwards and talk children's publishing. Not the end of the world.

togs when was your last title pretty sure you guys need to take care of your own ,until you do i wouldn't be pointing fingers about where anyone else's placements.

Hey what's up Togs? Your 8 year old boy posting here in your name some of the time?

You've been awfull lately. I mean awfully down in the dumps. Change your cigarette brand maybe.

As a part time trainer to Professional no nothings I might be able to help you out, but you have to want to change.

First off, a bit of exercise to get the blood flowing, so a short walk around the block...........or pasture......as the case may be.

Then some stretching will loosen up the joints and release some of the emotional tension you seem to be holding on to.

For the stretching I'm going to recommend some Yoga for you..............but because you're my friend I'm going to prescribe the best type of Yoga for your particular situation.........

Beer Yoga. Go for the gusto.

Still haven't figured out yet why people are worried about Gilman's capers. Is he eating too many of them, getting bad gas? Are you worried about the fiber intake? Don't like vegetarians? Shortage of capers in local market? Fill me in....

If Berger was a Hawk we'd back him, it's what we do. Gilman is a Hawk so we do back him. You don't want to be in a fox hole with the enemy. I'd more than welcome Gilman to have my back in a fox hole.

I don't know, there is something goofy about the #3 wrestler obsessing about beating #2. I'd like Berger more if he started trashing Nolf.

Brands could stop it but doesn't. Not sure why he keeps letting Gilman do it.

As a coach you deal with many different personalities. Just like at work you have many personalities and adjust accordingly. If you have an employee that talks and doesn't get the job done you take action. If your best productive employee talks a little, you say keep up the good work.

Understanding that everyone is different and motivates themselves differently is what separates great coaches from mediocrity coaches. Great fans also understand this.

Being disrespectful to an opponent and team during introductions should not happen. I'm not a big fan of it during a match but can understand it and accept it because it is competition. Gilman is a heck of a wrestler and the front runner to win the 125 national championship - no doubt about that.

To all the fans who are going to bitch about this post...don't complain if he gets beat at BigTens or NCAA's and everyone not a hawkeye fan is cheering. He has earned that all by himself.

If you don't understand that everyone in the arena who is not an Iowa fan cheers when an Iowa wrestler loses you haven't been at this long. It comes with the territory. It's us against the world and the Gopher fans cheer the loudest against us. I'm ok with Gilman, and the things he does. Tom and Terry are ok with it too or they would put a stop to it.
