They were horrible again last night. Pathetic against Wisconsin. Miserably incompetent/biased/inconsistent last night. Those back-to-back possessions that led to Jan's technical were typical. Both calls were blatantly wrong, and both went against Iowa. The "charge" should have been a block, and the "block" should have been a charge. In addition, MSU was all over Iowa all over the floor with nothing getting called. Iowa was playing basketball while MSU was playing rugby, so Iowa gets phantom and ticky-tack foul calls while MSU hacks and bumps and holds constantly with nothing called.

And then there was the play were the MSU player dribbled the ball off her foot along the baseline and out of bounds, clear as day on TV, I called it live as it happened, and the damn official 2-feet from the play gave the ball to MSU! Eventually they showed the replay and, clear as damn day, the MSU girl dribbled the ball off her own foot. Oh well, right? LOL

Bullshit vs. Wisconsin. Horseshit vs. MSU. The smell is about the same. Wonder what kind of officiating shit Iowa will have to play through tonight?

Anyway, great job by the Hawkeyes to rise above it and win--by 13. A decent performance by the officials and it would've been by at least 20.

I'm so sick of basketball officials. Gotta get the challenge system next season, or the game is just gonna be totally unwatchable--if you have any sense of fair play, that is.

So you want the challenge system and slow the game down even more? Sparty had 18 fouls and we had 14. Yes, the 2 plays in a row were horrible and Jan did the right thing and got T’d up. And then the pendulum swung the other way for awhile. You know going into a Michigan State game it’s going to be physical as hell. We turned it over a lot but guess what, we’re a tough team as well. I’m sure Sparty fans think the refs weren’t great either. They spent the entire 1st qtr swallowing their whistle. But good teams play through it like we did tonight. Officiating isn’t going to get a lot better. And every call isn’t going Iowas way.

I just hope that big Ohio State post player (can’t recall her name) that drew a lot of somewhat touch fouls on Iowa players in Columbus…doesn’t get all the calls tonight.

As long as they stay consistent with what they’re calling a foul the entire game is the main thing for me. Then it’s up to the teams to adjust. I’ve never liked it when they call a bunch of fouls on one team at the end of the quarter or half to “even things out.” Equal doesn’t always mean fair and if one team is fouling a lot more that team should have a lot more fouls than the other team.

It’s a fast game. I hate inconsistent foul calls, but that doesn’t mean we should review them or be able to challenge them. And they generally get most other things correct.

I don't know how you call jump just because someone is lying on the floor. The other player has to actually get some hold of the ball. I saw three ( one was to our advantage) that didn't seem like the defensive players even touched the ball. And all the bumping that went on in the lane and that MSU player gets two fouls late for being "too close"?

There was one play MSU player has the ball on the floor flailing legs and rolling before Iowa grabbed for a jump. Should of been travel first.

As I said in the game thread a few minutes ago… That one 30 to 40 second snippet of time where they called that horrible block and then equally horrible charge ( I swear Hannah’s had about 5 charges like that this year ) I thought the officiating became pretty favorable down the stretch. I’m beginning to think the old proverbial adage “get a technical” and change the officiating pattern might have some merit after all…..🤷‍♂️

I’m gonna say this again, because I really am frustrated without the ability to change it. But as God is my witness, they hose Hannah Stuelke all the time. She has been called for some of the absolute worst charging calls. I’ve ever seen this year, probably five bare minimum.

That charge last night, the girl got there late and Hannah was moving sideways past her. The one the night before hell she never even took a step into her. It’s truly bizarre to me… And you can’t think they have it out for her per se. She seems like a kind, pleasant, joyful young lady, but I swear she hardly ever gets the benefit of the doubt….

Am I the only one thinking this?

Absolutely, that whole jump ball conundrum in girls basketball is a really bizarre phenomenon to me. If you’ve watched any of the girls high school state championships for Iowa like I have this last week, you can tell they are coached to try to reach in and grab the ball after a player gets a rebound… It’s the craziest shit, foul the hell out of someone but once you get your arms around the ball, it’s a jump. What the holy hell?!

Completely agree we need the challenge call for coaches. 1 per half and if you lose the challenge it counts as a timeout and you're out of challenges for that half. If you win the challenge, you should get to challenge again until you lose it.

So true. At least half of those jump balls are fouls.

Yes. Yes I do. You realize that's how it's done in the WNBA, right? If there were a challenge system, Iowa wouldn't have "lost" to UCLA on a blatantly ridiculous call with 3.8 seconds to play. So yah, the only way to compensate for the ridiculously poor officiating that, as you say, isn't going to get any better, is to give coaches the right to challenge. And as I say, it seems to work just fine in the WNBA. That's one thing that league got right.

And you do know that they also have challenges in the NFL and MLB, right? So it's not exactly a new concept.

Exactly. But the refs last night were so inconsistent that they called the block-charge one way and then they called it the exact opposite about 15 seconds later--and both calls, coincidentally, went against Iowa. And both were completely wrong.

Officiating basketball is tough but man I get frustrated as well. It's almost like they are guessing half the time.
I get frustrated as well. There is so much contact now compared to years ago it's hard to know when it's a foul.
Hand checking to me should never be allowed. A play today in the Indiana game the offensive plyer drove the lane right into the defensive player. Defensive player was strait up as they bumped bodies, but arms and hands were strait up. Foul called on defensive player.
She looked at the ref in disbelief. I thought it was a bad call. Guess not

Agree with everything you just said and saw that play as well. The hand checking and rugby style is ruining the game imo. And then how the heck are you supposed to guard someone when you’re straight up like that?

Big10 or whoever evaluates these refs should have a very busy offseason. Need to tell Michael McConnell and a couple others to move along.

Gina Cross and Cameron Inouye are both absolute bottom of the barrel bad. I recognize the two of them instantly from their “work” in both the NCAA and the W. And instant recognition of a sports official generally isn’t a good sign.
