Ok, there have been a couple of threads on "good vs no good" on kicks in college. I won't start another. My question is in regards to watching indoor games where they flags/streamers are attached to the top of the goalposts. The question is.....why? I get it for outdoor games.....but indoor games???

I need the Iowa game to get here....I have too much time on my hands.

Just guessing, but maybe so you can tell that the home team isn't tampering with the atmosphere; i.e., all of a sudden a stout tailwind appears behind their kicker. Dome teams have been accused of such things. I suppose that they could glue down the streamers or put magnets in them if they feel that devoted to cheating.

I don't know about college but the NFL is fast approaching the 'box & basket" solution for field goals. Imagine the goal posts as they are now - then put a cross bar across the top to create a box - then attach a net to all for corners and sides....when the ball end up in the net = 3 points. No guess work, no controversy...and the added benefit of making field goals more difficult.

This is dumb for a host of reasons

You have an eagle-eye. Never knew that was the case. Perhaps the posts they use indoor are also used outdoor, and it's too much a pain in the butt to remove/replace the streamers? O/W I got no clue.

What are the reasons? It would eliminate any controversy if top cross bar is high enough that it won't be hit.

OP applied it wouldn't. Like kickers who over kick the ball would be punished because it didn't go through the hole at the end of the field. Also the fan safety issue (that's why the nets are there, plus to catch the expensive football) and eliminating them on the side is just silly.

Ahhhh what? Expensive footballs? Fan safety? Kickers punished for increasing difficulty?

This post makes no sense. First why wouldn't you keep the nets on the side? Checkout how arena football does it - would love to see that system in the NFL.

I mean the official who is under the upright has the best angle you can have. They are looking straight up from the upright and the rule is clear. The ball must pass 100% inside the upright. If any part of the ball is not inside the upright, then it is no good. On kicks that go over the uprights, that is deemed to be no good. They ball must pass inside the uprights.

They can't review it, unless they install cameras on the uprights looking straight up. That technology won't be coming anytime soon. So from now on, kickers get the ball between the uprights and you will be fine.
