A customer accused of fatally shooting a shoplifter who was fighting with employees at a Family Dollar store in Dallas has been arrested and faces a murder charge, police said.

Police responded to the shooting just before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Family Dollar store at 3200 S. Lancaster Road. When officers arrived they found a man lying in front of the store with a gunshot wound, police said in a news release Wednesday. The man died at the scene.

Police said their preliminary investigation determined a fight happened inside the store when employees confronted the man about items he was trying to steal.

The customer, Kevin Jackson Sr, 47, walked into the store, saw the fight, and then shot the man who had been accused of stealing, police said.

The man, whose name has not been released, stumbled outside the store and collapsed. He did not have any weapons, police said.

Jackson was arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to Lew Sterrett Jail.

Gonna need more info. What was happening in fight? If guy was on top pummeling employee or bashing head into floor then the shooting is justified. If they were playing patty cake then probably not.

A decent attorney would likely get this guy off. Is that likely if he frequents a Family Dollar, maybe one of the gun advocacy groups gets involved, but I would imagine the cameras will tell the full story.

An incident such as this is why companies instruct employees not to try and restrain shoplifters

According to the affidavit, Betts tried to leave with the items, but the woman took his backpack.

Betts briefly stepped outside but returned, "striking her multiple times with his fists." Another female employee "intervened by spraying Betts with mace and trying to get him to leave."

This is probably going to be the issue for the fella. Or not. It is Texas.

According to the affidavit, surveillance footage shows Betts running toward the door being hit by both women before Jackson told them to move and shot Betts.

"Just know that at the time of the shooting, there was no imminent danger for a deadly force confrontation. Not at this point," said Dallas Police Sgt. Warren Mitchell.

Yep, this is murder. Might be tough finding a jury that won't deadlock, however.

I don’t think they’ll get him on murder when it’s all said and done. Probably manslaughter in some degree, if anything.

Wild west. Lots of people packing heat and itching to use it.

The guy will probably be celebrated by the GOP as a hero.

I lived in Kennesaw, GA and the law required everyone to own a gun. Shortly before passing, however, they added a clause to allow "conscientious objectors".
wow. not that I didn't believe you...

In Kennesaw, Georgia, local law says that “every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm.” “If you're going to commit a crime in Kennesaw and you're the criminal – are you going to take a chance that that homeowner is a law-abiding citizen?” asked Kennesaw Mayor Derek Easterling.Mar 7, 2018

That guy has been walking around with a murder boner for years waiting for the opportunity to be a hero. Now, he got his wish and that store retained their Pepsi.

Bravo gun nuts, bravo.

The shooter seems like he should be convicted and go to jail.

Also, the dead guy could've just not stolen stuff (pepsi, whatever, not relevant what it was), and prevented his own death.

It doesn't sound like a good shoot to me. Guy was apparently fleeing when shot.

However you may have trouble getting the grand jury to bring charges and more problems getting a trial jury to convict. They may end up trying to plea him down to manslaughter.

They spend $$$ to buy a gun.

Gotta shoot someone or he wasted the money.

Texas, bruh!

Nothing like having your fantasies realized, even if it’s shooting some dude in the back for stealing a box of chocolates (and a Pepsi).
