Good News today: Nick Baer gets a Schollie

Perhaps the most productive, most well rounded Hawkeye, who played with the most
energy and intensity will get a Scholarship.

It's about **** time

#goHawks

He deserves it for certain. Now let's see who Fran has up his sleeve. I am guessing we take two more players, in the addition to Baer getting his. A PG and a slasher would suit us fine. Preferably one as a grad transfer who can play day one.

Who is the 3rd that is leaving then? Or is this just speculation on your part?

Compared to all the bullshit threads today, this title is the most accurate on the board. Congrats to Nicolas.

Speculation of the person that everyone has been talking about as the first one to leave...but still has not.

Like a lot of others, I thought(HOPED) that Fleming and Hutton would be a valuable part of our team in the future. That said, I expect Fran to able to gather up some equivalent or better players. At least one.

A grad transfer PG that can support the development training of Williams would be fine. Bohannon will not really be a factor for at least 2 years. Bohannon is not quick and needs to adapt to the B1G level of competition. If the grad transfer fails to adjust, only one year's support is spent and Fran will still have a scholarship to offer to the 2017 class.

Right now with Baer getting a ride, only one is open.Save that for 2017. Connor Mac is a SG and has Jok's ride spoken for as of this time. Connor could do a Tyler Self ( Kansas' Bill Self son) and permit his father to pay his schooling and Iowa would have another open ride to offer.

Um....except Tyler Self s__ked even in HS. He would be the equivalent of a John Lickliter - nowhere near worth a scholarship.

But I agree, papa should pay the way to gain additional talent with the extra scholarship. Then if a scholly opens up and there is no one to fill it with, give Connor a scholarship for a year, on a year by year basis. Whatever is best for the team (i.e. if a highly related recruit wants to be a Hawkeye, he gets Connor's scholly that year...to better the team.).

If Connor was officially a walk on aren't there some activities he would not be able to participate in? Like training table? I think it at least used to be that way, but maybe just for football

I admire the optimism so many are expressing and I will gladly own the 'I told you so' comments if I am wrong, but I have 0 confidence Fran has a plan. He recruited the guys who are leaving despite a ton of PT available next year and far from an abundance of talent on the squad.

Fran has until May 20 or 25 to sign someone in the late period, correct? I suspect we will throw our name in the hat for some 'higher profile' kids who will land at better programs, then drop to back up offers who will pick Nebraska, Creighton, Minnesota, etc. over Iowa.

I fully expect to hear 'Some kids left for other opportunities. We went after a couple guys and it didn't work out. We have Williams and Bohannon who can run the point and several multi-position guys like Dom, Moss, and even Pemsl, who played point some in high school. We will bank the scholarship.'

Fran has a big opportunity here to land another impact player to help next year. Can he deliver?

I don't see how in your eyes he could. Fran has clearly failed because a couple players have transferred, although college players transfers at the rate of two a team these days. Somehow, we fail if we bank a scholarship, oddly enough that isn't a bad idea with the recruits we've been pursuing in 2017. And finally, if we do pick up a player the poor soul won't pass your eye test. So there is no possible way Fran wins this game of yours.

Own this, I have zero confidence you appreciate the successes the McCaffery program has had at Iowa and all you want to do is moan and complain.

Baer receiving a scholly has yet to be announced and Fran may have other plans. Hopefully, we soon hear of BE's transfer.

I'm willing to bet Fred Hoiberg's salary that Nick Baer gets a scholarship very soon.
If he doesn't, I may never go to another Men's Hawkeye BB again.
It's ridiculous. He** in many games, he was one of the 3 best players in Black n Gold.
This isn't Rocket surgery.......give him the Ride.

Question: Considering the excellent success of Nick Baer, as an In-state, Big school
Walk-on, who should the Staff be looking at from inside the state, to be taking the same path to
Playing time and a schollie that Nick took ??

With respect RockeyeState, Iowa is a state that does not produce very many D-1 level (especially B1G and Big12) recruits on an annual basis. I kinda believe that Iowa "REACHED" when they offered Jordan Bohannon. He may be the state of Iowa's Mr. Basketball of 2016 but that is a popularity poll, not a barometer of next level talent. Pemsl was the upcoming stud until his injury condition. I hope Pemsl can regain his game and continue to improve as he moves into a higher level of competition.

If there was a walk-on candidate, what would he be like given Drake, UNI, and Iowa State had passed on offering this prospect. Would he really have D-1 talent? Iowa had the Soukup twins. Nice Iowa HS players who went to JuCo and got a chance to practice with the regular Hawks. Walk-ons should be the rarity, not the plan B option.

Good player off the bench (most of the time) but "perhaps most productive, most well rounded?"

Drugs destroy your brain.

Baer was a gift. His kind does not come along very often. A home state and local kid who develops late, willing to pay his way for the roll of the dice chance to play D-1 ball for a team/school you grew up as a fan/ supporter. Ethan Happ went to Wisconsin when Groce did not offer him an Illini scholarship.

Should Iowa have walk-ons on the MBB program? 1 or 2 to fill a roster of 15. Kansas Kentucky, Indiana, Wisconsin, UNC have had walk-ons lend a hand as they work towards a NCAA title, but scholarship players should be the real difference makers.

Nick has shown he is better than several of the scholarship players on Iowas team.

Wow, a lot of Baer worship around here. I get it, sort of. Yes, he contributed at times this season, and completely disappeared at other times. Played with fire and passion. Love all of that. But to me, Baer's very limited skill set means the Hawks are best served if he remains an off-the-bench role player who can bring zest to the game when needed. If he's a starter, it probably means the team is short on physically strong, skilled D1 athletes of the type you need to win the B10 and advance beyond the first round or two of the tourney. Hope I'm wrong, but that's how I see it. Again, love seeing Baer in a Hawkeye uniform but am very wary of projecting too much into his game, which has been very sporadic against quality competition.

So this year with 13 scholarship players, with 1 injured, 1 playing some minutes, 1 hardly playing, and 2 redshirting, you think we should have 13 scholarship players and the coaches son as a walk on so there will be 6 players barely playing? Hard to keep everyone happy with that scenario.

What would you be saying if had been recruited as a scholarship player like Uhl? I doubt you would be saying that you doubted his development and if he could be starter. After the freshman season he had you would be projecting big things from him. He was the third most efficient player on the team behind Uthoff and Jok. He contributes on offense and defense. And again he is only a freshman. he was one of the best players for Iowa against Villanova a top four team in the country. He was the best underclassman they had this year.

Yes. If there is a player(s) that pops up and wants to be a Hawkeye AND they are badass, then yes definitely. Always over recruit for a better player, IF you can...

What's it to you? Nick came in as a walk on and made agreements with Fran. Both sides will honer that agreement whatever it is. I don't see a point in the constant harping about it. He will either get one or he won't and it will all be based on what they have discussed behind closed doors.

I guess that Fran doesn't know what he is talking about when he says that he thinks that Baer can become a great player if he adds 15 lbs during the off season. I don't know how you can call his skill set very limited. He has a high basketball IQ and always seems to be in the right place at the right time and has shown that he can hit the outside jumper and attack the rim.

I will take Fran's opinion over yours.

Limited Skill Set???? Give us a break, here. Did you watch any games?
He almost single handedly brought the Hawkeyes back against IU. Then, the Schollie guys botched it from there. NOVA, only guy that played all day

I can confirm that it has not yet been offered to Nicholas, but that's because the coaches are at the Final 4 and haven't had end of year meetings with players yet. I cannot imagine a scenario where Nicholas does not get one of these 2 rides. He is a great kid, and has the potential to develop into a great player. With his work ethic, intelligence, and passion, I bet he gets there. Also was just named Academic All-B1G, btw. Super kid.

Fran also said that Oglesby was a "phenomenal" shooter. Many times. We should all know by now that Fran is prone to hyperbole. I hope he's right about Baer.

I heard in practice he was great. Some guys just can't transfer that to actual games. That was Oglesby's issue.

When there is something remotely resembling strategic recruiting, player development, and offers that make sense relative to the needs of the program, I will be on here with unicorns, rainbows and smiley faces. Until then, I choose to be a realist about the current state of affairs. Fran will wrap a pretty bow around 'freeing' up a scholarship for Baer, which he is deserving of, then bank the other ride for a yet to be named in state phenom who will underwhelm.
All Fran has to restore my confidence is to find a PG in the next two months. Odds he delivers?

I'm sure that restoring your confidence is high on Fran's list. He may get a combo guard since that is what he apparently is trying to recruit right now and we are one of 5 schools in contention for his servces.

Player development? You mean like turning two three star players into first team all BIG players or maybe the progression from Uthoff his Sophomore year looking like an uncoordinated baby giraffe at times to a third team all American. How about Gabes progression into the sixth man of the year or Matt Gatens development from his junior to senior year. The examples are all over the place but you're a guy that gets mad at a coach for where his team is ranked in the preseason so I can't expect much from you.

I think the best example of Player development is Aaron White. Aaron only had 1 other Div 1 offer, (Duquense) coming out of H.S. Iowa turns him into an All Big Ten, force of nature, who gets drafted into the NBA.
