Grades for SD State

SD State showed a lot of good counter type wrestling and were pretty good on frustrating some of our guys. Gilman, Sorensen & Brooks made me feel pretty good, Stoll was pretty good also but hard to get a good read on him due to the track shoes their hwt had on. Disappointed with Clark & Meyer. To me Clark is similar to Mark Perry were he will drive us crazy at times during the year but when the lights come on in March he will be fine. Meyer seems like he needs something bad to happen before he wrestles to his abilities. Drives me nuts at times also.
Positives Gilman, Sorensen & Brooks look REALLY good but the rest of the guys have some work to do...

141 and 165 look like a real weak spots for Iowa, 157 at least seems like there's potential.

Gilman and Brooks looking outstanding so far. Sorensen and Clark solid.

Stoll starting to look like a bright spot.

What happened with Burak... why did he not wrestle?

I agree with those grades, except I gotta give Sammy an "A". Dude wanted no part of him and fled the mat everytime Sammy tried to set something up. A DQ is as good as a pin.

Disagree on 149. I give Stoll an A. He went after it the whole match. I am not sure what you are talking about with the counter type wrestlers. We were defending shots from 141-174.

I agree. 41-74, it looked like we got caught flat footed quite a bit.
Ryan's ankle pick on Grossy was pretty slick though. I liked seeing that.
I'd give Cooper an A-. Fought hard and hung in there with a really good wrestler in Pack. Cooper is right there with the ranked guys in the 57 weight class. A beaming ray of hope at one of our "weaker" weights.

In terms of Burak....TnT said he could have gone if truly needed. Just wish Klap was out there. Is he still with the program?

Finally, and a completely different topic...Terry Brands looked thin as hell. Conspiracy theory...Flo's documentary coming out, Terry has the fire to train again and competes at Olympic Trial in front of the Hawkeye faithful!!!

What's crazy is he did not score in the 1st period and still won 8-0! I do understand what your saying but Brandon not scoring in the 1st period is the least of my concerns...

His not scoring in the first period is why he could end up 4th this year instead of 1st. That's a lot of team points!

IMO, against guys like Retherford, Tsirtsis, a healthy Stieber.. I don't think it really matters if Sorensen can score in the first against them or not, so long as he actually scores. Guys will always be the freshest in the first, given them a little more gas in the tank to defend and handfight hard, so they are not always the easiest to score on, especially the top guys.

Grades are overrated. One wrestler gets a B or C for beating top 20 guy by decision when another gets an A for destroying the #189 ranked guy. I understand the fun of it, it's just all relative .

I will give you an A+ for putting things in perspective. Don't get too excited about that grade because it's not only relative...but the source is questionable. @WildTurk
