125-Gilman should be able to TF this guy but he had a decent gas tank. B+
133-Clark wrestling a tough opponent out of the gate. Just refused to give up points and looked fine cardio wise. His grade is high considering that it was Micic and CC was coming off a long break. A
141-Tough as always but it would have been good for him to get to his offense earlier. B
149-Same as above. Sorensen ran him out at the end with a major but I don't think he had a TD in the first period. B
157-Kemdawg wrestled like a seasoned veteran. Gave a scramble TD in the first period but then came back on him. Was in on shots multiple times but I sensed the game plan wasn't to get into too many scrambles with Murphy. Ironically, Kemdawg scored on a scramble. For those that don't know, Murphy unsnapped his own headgear. A
165-Just a tough wrestler in Massa. Many predicted a TF but Joes was able to keep him at bay in the last period. In the first two, Massa seemed to score at will but Gunther's cardio saved him. C
174-Ugh...Meyer let's guys in on his legs so easily and is a frustrating wrestler to watch. Could have won at the end....almost outscrambled him but the Amine had a one handed grip on one leg but had his head near his own knee. If Meyer had just locked the cradle up, he would have gotten the TD. Coaches said he did but the refs refused to review it. F
184-Brooks came out hard and was up by ten by the end of the first I think and eventually got the TF. A
197-Cash needs to show more of his athleticism because its there. Wrestled a pretty good match and paced himself. B
HWY-At one point, it looked like the Michigan kid had taken Stoll down and Stoll even got thrown off the mat. Think that woke him up and he came in on that lock of his and put the guy on his back for a pin. A

Not a bad match considering all of the traveling they have been doing. "Maalox" Meyer gives me fits because he just doesn't wrestle up to his potential and just sometimes forgets even the basics. Tom gets an attaboy because he caught an illegal leg scissors in a 50/50 position in Brandon's match I believe when nobody had really caught it. I think we see Marinelli against MSU.

Wilcke paced himself??? He stalled thru 2 1/2 periods and then took a shot and scored. He's quicker than these bigger guys and yet he doesn't use that to his advantage. He needs a blood transfusion from Topher.

I'm starting to get concerned with him and his inability to pull the trigger. He is starting to look scared to wrestle. Yes I said it. Scared to wrestle.

So everyone thinks going down to 184 next year will fix him? Compare him to this years 184. Notice any difference in offense.......desire.....heart..........

Ironside saw it immediately, (illegal scissors on Brandon) and called it.. I hate the 45 second delay radio to tv but gotta listen to Mark :)

Wow! I'm just laying it on the line and saying your opinion sucks. Wilcke just beat a guy that was ranked higher and you are bashing him? This is a kid that was a four sport athlete in high school and has done nothing but improve leaps and bounds since he came to Iowa. He has a huge upside! Jackasses like you will not help his confidence.

I mean..."crapman"? Your name about sums it up.

Meyer has wrestled like this since coming to Iowa. Nobody should be surprised by his style of wrestling.

People talk about his (athleticism/slow feet), I it think it's more about small movements and hand defense. His neutral body positioning is most frustrating, not much improvement the past 3 years.

Granted he has a great looking overall record, just not against top end guys. He's a borderline AA at best....hopefully he can duplicate results from last March

Meyer seems like a nice guy. Can't figure out why TnT are'nt getting him pissed off before he wrestles since he seems to need a wake up call to get after it. Really think your 197 er is going to 84 next year? I think if Stoll would been bounced in Carver he might of went for a tech instead of the fall. Good meet.

Gilman - looks tough as nails and huge for 125lbs against a pretty good opponent if I'm being picky I would like to see him get to a couple other techniques than his week side high-C .. Grade A
Clarke - looked really solid with a good tank after a Tough injury against a really good opponent Micic has very good defense against Clarkes style . Grade A
Carton - looks likes he is ready to go to war love his motor very solid against what seamed to be a very good freshman . Grade A
Sorensen - love the finishes on his leg attacks nice solid match keep it up.. Grade A
Kemerer - looking excellent at this stage against former AA . Guts and great lungs he is ready love to watch him get at it.. Grade A
Gunther - Did not back down keep up the hard work it will payoff. Massa could be # 1 or 2 at the end.
Grade B+
Meyer - like to see a couple more shots looks solid otherwise I believe in him keep up the hard work ..
Grade B
Brooks - Ready to do battle I believe so .. Grade A
Wilcke - just don't wait till the 3rd he has the skills and looks strong to me. Grade A-
Stoll - little more time he will be ready drill drill drill... Grade A-

Everyone has their own opinion crapman. If you don't agree with someone, tough shit. I was a four sport stud myself, drinking, fighting. Damn, can't remember the other two.

I like your grades. The only one I disagree with was Gunther. Blood was in the water in the third period to get out of the major. Hawkeyes of old would have smelled that and pounced. We need to get that back. I'm going with a C. Not because he wasn't outmatched, but he should have fought more to prevent the major.

Ranked higher? Neither kid was ranked and I think his opponent was like 2-6 on the year. I'd have to go back and look but pretty sure it was a losing record.

Edit: Wrestlestat shows him at 4-8 after last nights loss to Wilcke.

Questioning a freshman's desire or heart? The same freshman who wrestled Midlands while sick enough the coaches weren't going to let him wrestle. I don't think there is an emoji that can sum up the quality of your post.

Hawks are what they are.....pretty weak at 141, 165, and 197. I'm guessing they place anywhere from 4 - 6 at Nationals this year with the possibility of a 3rd place finish if Meyers and Brooks can place in the top 5. Still will come down to bonus pts scored and how tough some of the kids wrestle in the consolation rounds. Thought Clark did a great job of gutting it out last night and am hopeful he stay's as healthy as possible through the remainder of the season.

Next couple weeks should be a good indicator of how good the Hawks are with meets against OSU, Penn St, and tOSU.

I'm not questioning anything about Wilcke, who I haven't seen much of, but I DVR'd the meet and was watching it late and I was tired, and I fast forwarded a good chunk of it because they were collectively boring the hell out of me at that time. He won, that was good.

Aside from that, Wilcke is just another undersized Iowa 197 lber being forced into a spot he doesn't belong. He's not the first and history suggests he won't be the last.

Ok...........perhaps a different choice of words would be better. Instead of desire and heart which implied negative things about his character instead of what I meant to convey which was about his activity level while on the mat.

So instead of heart and desire, insert urgency and wrestle the full 7 minutes. He seemed to have the quickness to hit his shot almost anytime he wanted. He just didn't take his shot until the end of the match. His opponent didn't appear to be stopping him from shooting or at least trying harder to score. IMHO.

Was this the match with the double stall call near the end of the 1st period? We don't expect 197 to have the same pace as 125, 133, etc. but that was not a very good showing of his activity level.

That was my main complaint and sorry if my choice of words implied anything bad about his character. I have no doubt he is a great kid...and would make a great Groom for one of WWDM's daughters.

Visualizing fitting him into 184 next year the way he wrestles compared to Brooks hurts my mind. Actually comparing him to Burak or Uncle Luke and there is quite a bit of difference also.

Good on him for wrestling while sick at Midlands. Many readers here have probably gone to work or other functions while sick and should have stayed home and taken better care of themselves. That's life. That's doing what may be necessary even if not at our best. We move on.

Wilcke is solid and wrestles hard. Obviously light for the weight. Wonder where he ends up - is he a senior?

Re-watched a couple of parts of this meet again. Tom Brands was apparently not happy with Wilcke's "activity level" either, as he pulled him aside coming off the mat and offered up some visual technique advice, and was CLEARLY agitated and yelled something at him as he walked away. My view from the couch was telling me Tom was expecting more and wasn't happy about what he just witnessed.
