Great defense great win

This begins a true crunch time for the Hawks with several games in the near future. Finish the noncon with consistency and position yourselves for a tough road Purdue team. If lessons have been learned, we should be a solid team going forward. Expect some more lesson worthy efforts, but we currently have an identity.

I like that. We currently have an identity. Let' hope it is the tip of the iceberg because it sure seems like we have a bunch of guys who play with some grit.

How about that Bohannon!? I always wished Iowa had one of those little waterbug type point guards that just seems to move fast anywhere including cutting and circles and sideways. Well, Bohannon may not float across the water, he's more like a water polo guy. But, he gets the job done.

And Moss? Pemsl? Heck Kriener looks like he could have started McCaffery's first year here! I am just thrilled with this bunch.

On a related note, this borrowed small screen made it tough to see some stuff. What was Pemsl getting a lecture from Carstenson the ref for? It are looked like jail time and or a large fine was being threatened in no humorous way.

Pemsl has a bit of McCabe/Woodbury/Souix city in him. I.e. He can be a bit dickish at times.
I love his game don't get me wrong but the stare downs I could do without.

It's a fine line but he will develope a reputation with officials. Officials can a do notice/remember these things.

I am thrilled that we are starting to see the defensive intensity it takes to win. We still have some pretty frequent D breakdowns which will show up when a team hits some of the open looks we are giving them. ISU and UNI were laying bricks on some good looks. As long as the effort remains I think we can get better and grow into a solid defensive team by year end.

Our half court offense scares me a bit.
Peter has shown he can now create his own shot and he bails us out at the end of the clock. Moss seems to show signs of being able to get to the hoop and finish. Baer will work hard and seems to find some open looks, but when we see the upper half of the big ten if we can't score in transition color me nervous. I do like our options to close out games because we can put multiple shooters on the floor and I expect Jok to come through.

Growing pains lie ahead but you can see development. I am anxious to see us against real top 25 teams to see how much we've grown.

I love the success the team is having. Defense appears improved and they have some confidence at both ends of the floor. I think those tough early games against good teams have paid dividends finally.

I do wonder how much of the defensive success is due to opponents poor perimeter shooting, and how they are going to do against a team that isnt throwing up bricks all night or making poor choices offensively.

They are fun to watch and we will be in for a roller coaster.

Without breaking down every single play, it is difficult to determine exactly how good the Defense is playing. Basically how many wide open shots did the other team miss. That has nothing to do with good Defense, and that stat will go up and down all year long. UNI missed quite a few open shots, some on the same possession.

That said, Iowa put together back to back games where the other team didn't pummel them Offensively, and owned the paint.

I'm not sure if it's going to last or not, or how much we've improved on the Defensive end, but for now it's been fun to beat two in-state opponents that are generally pretty well regarded and we've obviously had trouble beating them consistently, so this is good.

They've provided some hope. For now I'm riding with that. Good job Hawks!

Last years team was able to go into Purdue and dominate. This years team will get their chance. If we can play a good 40 minutes against them, we will know where we stand. Purdue is legit.

The one proven way to counter Purdue's height, simply because doesn't run so well, is to speed up the game. Run, Run, Run.

It will be interesting to see how Fran tries to counter all of that size.
