Great new Luka Garza article in HawkCentral. Thinks he’s a player fans will like.

http://www.hawkcentral.com/story/sp...erweight-high-schooler-iowa-center/343394001/

His HS coach Chuck Driesell (son of famed former Maryland coach Lefty Driesell) has HIGH praise for him:

“I think they’re going to have to play him,” Driesell said. “I think he’ll get down there in June and he’ll outwork everybody, and they’re going to see that his skill level is good enough for Division I right away.”

Here’s something to look for in the PTL:

“Driesell has been working with Garza on developing offensive moves farther from the basket. He won’t be able to back down college centers the way he did in high school, so he’s adding a turnaround jump shot that he can initiate two or three steps off of the block. Garza also said he’s working on adding speed and core strength in order to hold up better on the defensive end.

“My length is something coach McCaffery says is advantageous to the team,” said Garza, who may not be done growing. “I’m just going to work hard and take what I can get in terms of, any time they put me on the floor, I’m going to play as hard as I can.””

For those of you wondering when he’ll arrive:

“Garza will graduate June 12 and catch a flight to Iowa that evening. He figures he may even arrive at his new home before midnight, just in time for summer classes and workouts with his new teammates.”

This kid sounds like a gym rat, like A White. I'll be shocked if he's not in the rotation from game one. May have the most well rounded game of any of Iowa's big men from the time he arrives on campus.

A couple of things caught my eye. He's still growing, he's a passer first, he's a rim protector and he comes from a athletic family. Love players that like to pass the ball first although he has shown he can score too, like he did in high school. Hope he's still growing and he's the rim protector that his coach thinks he can be.

His PT early is sure to be related to his rim protection/rebounding abilities. Agree that being a passer first will help with the scorers we have returning. And the athletic discipline he grew up around will work well with this team. He sounds like he wants to hit the ground running, which he'll need to do to make an impression at Iowa these days.

I'm excited about Luka coming in. He seems dedicated to learning as much as he can, both on and off the court. He's all-in to get his body to where he will be most effective. If he has the "fire" like Woody had, oh boy, look out. :)

Garza seems to possess a natural affiinity for the game, which is awesome. What he may lack in upper level athleticism, he makes up for in sheer presence. His girth and game will be welcomed.

From the PTL application:
"If you are interested in applying for selection in the draft to be held June 12th, you need to fills out the forms completely, and get them back to me by June 12th, so Ivan do the draft prospectus for the coaches."

Since Luka is graduating June 12, and not arriving at Iowa until that evening, wondering how the above will happen. Obviously, he won't be able to be seen by the PTL coaches before the draft.

Read between the lines on that application. That is for players not attending the University of Iowa or UNI or haven't previously played in PTL.

Odds are if the coaches don't have a chance to see him play he won't get drafted.

Thanks for sharing!

Nothing not to like about Luka. Needs to keep working on strength and speed, and the Hawks could have the first center who can play both ends of the court well, in a long time. He and Nunge both seeem to bring a lot of length, diverse skills, and great character. Should be really interesting how the coaches determine the rotation with all of the bigs on the team.
