...the recent gas tax increase (one of very few tax increases that is actually beneficial, since it's based on usage and utilized for a very specific purpose) puts the decades-old project on the Iowa DOT's fast-track. Now, the entire remaining 41 miles will be completely finished by 2018. Before this newest development, only the 12-mile section between Moville and Correctionville, currently being worked on, would have been completed by 2018. This would make a Sioux City to Iowa City trip on US 20 & I-380--now down to just around 4 hours, due to the recent completions near Early--only about 3 hours 45 minutes. 30 years ago, one would have been hard-pressed to make that trip by air in less time than that.

That is good news. It will be awesome to have another modern route across the state. Don't know how much time it will save but I always thought it would be much more efficient for those of us living in Central Iowa and heading out to points north of Nebraska to have US 20 completed and save us from heading SW on I80 then back North up the Missouri River. (Or maybe having to go slightly East I380 to get to US 20 makes the differences insignificant?) Either way this will still make a trip to NW Iowa much easier.

It makes sense to complete the US 20 4-lane expansion ASAP.

I know some want US 30 to get priority, but I-80 is only a few miles away from it.

Completing US 20 really helps out traffic flow across the NW quarter of the state.

It's about time. I can tell my grandpa that perhaps we will both live long enough to see 20 completed. I hope they raise the Hwy speed to 70, if they are going to 75 mph on the interstate.

Except it wasn't supposed to be for this purpose. So what are the funds, which were to be used for this project, going to be used for now?

Easier to go see the Hawks play from Sioux City. The trucks can have I80.

So tell us what the tax increase is suppose to be used for.

Existing bridge and road repair, but also faster completion of projects already on the books.

US 20 has always been a project in the works. It's the very definition of a project in the works. I can think of few other reasons for a gas tax increase, other than some maintenance.
