IOWA CITY, Iowa — Like a page torn from yesteryear, Iowa and Michigan ran up and down the Carver-Hawkeye Arena floor Friday night the same way the schools did 30 years ago. As Scott Doctherman wrote in The Athletic about the Michigan game.
The Iowa Football team kicked off the 2019-20 athletic year to a 10-3 ride, and a fantastic 49-24 Holiday Bowl win.
Now, as we enjoy the joy of the winter sports just like the 1980s, what will 2020 bring to Iowa Football?
TEAM .... as the 2019-20 basketball teams spotlight over the past week, as mirror images, to a certain extent.
Questions for 2020 Iowa Football?
This should be exciting in 2020.
Seniors: LT Alaric Jackson and Chauncey Golston are two outstanding players to anchor the respective lines.
Then, sophomore center Tyler Linderbaum inside, with junior Kyler Schott also inside. Junior Mark Kallenberger can play either inside or out, as a guard or tackle. Senior Cole Banwart will hopefully be back from injury.
The O-Line hopefully continues to improve with run blocking and pass blocking in 2020. The keys to the unit will be playing as one unit. Iowa has had ups and downs in the O-Line over the past 5 seasons.
Wow, how impressive has the past 5 seasons been from a overall wins standpoint?
The outlier, has been coming up short reaching Indianapolis again, since 2015.
Let's look inside on the D-Line?
Outside, we have Golston returning as the lone starter, but both junior Daviyon Nixon and senior Austin Schulte have played. Clearly, they fit the role of poor man Cedrick Lattimore and Brady Reiff from 2019.
Iowa will hopefully be like Clemson in 2019, as an overall defense. DC Phil Parker is fantastic. Let's see what roles he finds for his new, old and young players in 2020.
Senior LB Nick Niemann is a player to watch. Senior Matt Hankins and junior Jack Koerner provide leadership, as well.
It will have some youth in 2020 in all three levels of the defense.
Like with Iowa Women's and Men's basketball, I am excited for 2020 with the University of Iowa football team!
Maybe not this high though. But, another very competitive Kirk Ferentz product, capable of playing a winning brand of Hawkeye Football.

Questions for 2020 Iowa Football?
- Who is QB Spencer Petras and how will his sophomore season be compared with others over the past 40+ years?
- Unlike QB Jared Goff at Cal, Petras becomes a #1 signal caller for Iowa, who are far more staple, then Sonny Dykes Cal Bears. Pretty nice storyline for Iowa's next QB to be, though.
- Who sets the edge on the other side of DE Chauncey Golston in 2020? Further more, how good can senior Golston become as an Iowa DE on the 2020 defensive line?
- Iowa has four juniors headed out: AJ Epenesa, Tristan Wirfs, Geno Stone and Toren Young .... but look at the youth movement of sophomores with Petras at QB, RB Tyler Goodson, TE Sam LaPorta, with WRs Tyrone Tracy, Jr. and Nico Ragani?
- There will be growing pains in 2020 for Iowa Football, but look at the state of Iowa athletics right now?
