The Hawkeyes easily could have folded when NW had that 6-point lead with a minute and a half to go, but they hung in there and, like the football team, pulled a victory from deep out of the jaws of defeat. Fabulous way to start the BIG season. And although we all tend to look at the negatives of everything, which is fine up to a point, this was a tremendous win. Whether it will mean anything by March is anyone's guess, but for now the sun is shining on the Hawkeyes.

Iowa brought the ball up on that last possession with 5.8 seconds to play, and whatever was drawn up fell apart immediately. Had Payton Sandfort not gotten the timeout, it looked like Iowa wasn't even going to get a shot off. But the kid was smart enough to call the TO, and when that play broke down, one guy stepped up and saved the day. Steph Curry, Caitlin Clark, Michael Jordan . . . no one could have turned that L into a W any better than Dix did. A long fade-away that hit nothing but net.

After blowing a 17-point lead, the Hawkeyes start the BIG season 1-0 for the first time in four years. Gotta enjoy that one.

BTW: I don't know what the actual attendance was . . . maybe 7,500 or so . . . but it was a much more active, vocal crowd than usual for the men's games. So congrats to all of you who were there and who saw a fantastic finish.

Well said, OP! Been reading a lot of negativity on here from others, myself included. But coming back when down 6 with a couple minutes to go says a lot. Yeah, much improvement is needed to finish in the top half of the league and get an NCAA bid IMO, but they didn't quit last night. I've mentioned elsewhere that getting Traore and Koch back will help immensely. I'd add to that, if Fran plays Traore 30 minutes a game when healthy. We need his defense and rebounding big time!

Not sure about 30 minutes,(long season), but I believe he will play a lot

Any conference win is a good win no matter how you cut it. Major props to Dix and Payton for playing damn near the entire game with Cooper and Traore out. Say what you want about defense but it was gutsy as hell to pull that W out with a very limited bench.

Hope Cooper and Traore aren't out too much longer.

Just watched Dix post game interview , he thought it was short! 😆😆

I think Harding, Thelwell, Dix with Pryce as a backup make for a really strong guard court.

Our PGs are both guys that have that testy edge of determination and fight that I think infects the entire team.

Don’t need to say anything about Dix…..and Pryce brings a 3 point threat, the ability to make heady plays, and some length and defense……

Get Seydou healthy and Payton in the groove and this is a pretty tough team.

Last point…..NW is actually a very tough team.

We are going to have our hands full with the two Michigan bigs. I just hope our three point shooting is on for that game.

If Traore is good, not like 65% but good, I like our chances. Sure in half court they win but our press with Traore will turn them over and run outs should help too but that means getting some steals and an occasional rebound, I’m only half kidding about occasional rebound

Good write up OP! There was a lot a negativity right up until the final shot hit nothing but the bottom of the net. My own thoughts included.

Iowa did allow themselves to be bullied into blowing a 17 point lead, and often looked lost and slow on both ends.
The missed FTs are something we are not used to seeing as Hawk fans.
The TO by PS looked to be a huge mistake - but in hindsight it was brilliant.

Never give up on the Hawks is the lesson here.
