The sides had been working toward a reunion all offseason. 2016 is expected to be Greenway's final season. Greenway's on-field effectiveness has really waned, but he's an important leader as the Vikings' longest-tenured player. Greenway will probably be on the field for 30-40 percent of the snaps in 2016

One of my all time favorite Hawks hands down. Remember when he tore his knee up quick into his NFL career? Cant remember forsure, but wasnt he busting through the wedge on kickoff duty when it happened early in the game and season? Anyways people were writing him off early after that. Foolish.

I still wear my faded #18 Greenway jersey I got as a sophomore in highschool. I'm 31 now. Great player, great career, great man. He is a legend to me.

One of mine as well. I recall it being the opening kickoff of the opening game. Might have even been preseason. A crying shame and a total waste to spend his career with the queens.

Something seems wrong with your story. I'm also 31 and Greenway started at Iowa the year before me. How were you a sophomore in high school with a #18 jersey?

That happened in the first preseason game of his rookie season. I guess the good news is that it happened so early that he was ready by the beginning of the next season. He's only missed 4 games since then, so he has stayed pretty darn healthy overall. I think most of the people up here in the Twin Cities are happy to have him for one more year.

Lulz, Vikings > your team, regardless of who you root for or what kind of f***ing history they have that I don't give a f*** about. You're welcome. Friends? :)

Made himself a very solid NFL career.
Well deserved send-off.

He's had an Excellent NFL career, all with his original team. Presumably, Chad was a Viking fan, as a kid, as it's the closet team to where he grew up in SD. A great Hawkeye and his playing for MN has me often rooting for the Vikings, even though I'm generally not a fan of the purple. A super person, as well, like most Hawkeyes turn out.

#goHawks

Maybe he had an old scott Mullen jersey?

Someone in this story must have spent 3 years in 4th grade.;););)

I ran 3 laps with Chad Greenway at Augustana's track in Sioux Falls a few years ago when he was in town for a kids football camp. He showed up about halfway through my workout. Didn't recognize him at first but he was wearing a Hawkeye t-shirt. Gave a "Go Hawks" shout out as he was jogging in the outside lane. We ended up jogging a few laps together. Spoke highly of Ferentz and Parker, loved IC, etc. As I was stretching after my run, he threw me a Vikings water bottle which he signed with a good luck message (I was training for a marathon). I told him I was a Bears fan. He said that was my problem. I still have the bottle but I put a Bears sticker over the god awful Viking logo.

That's childish. Who cares what team a plays for...

Relax. I'm a life-long Bears fan and I have a relative that works in their front office. Its the same reason I, as a life-long Hawkeye fan, don't have Cornhusker or Cyclone items in my rec room or work-out area. The sticker is removable if (god forbid) I ever somehow switch and become a Viking fan. I don't really treat it as some kind of collectable anyway because I still take the bottle with me on my long runs.

It was the first play of his first preseason game hurt his knee on the kickoff and was out for the seaon

Would have rather seen him retire before this past year when he was still in his prime. He just wasn't the same this year and really struggled. I am glad to see he is finishing his career as a viking, the only team he has played for in his career.

My absolute favorite Hawkeye player of all time. Met him several times while I was a student at Iowa and have met him while he has been with the Vikings. Have never met a player as happy to give his time to fans as Chad Greenway. Just a down to earth, hard working farm kid. An absolute model Hawkeye in every sense of the word and he has earned everything he has ever gotten. Will always be my favorite Hawk.

I've have the same interactions with him, too. He owned a home in my neighborhood for a few years and whenever him and his family would come back for a week or so, he was always very friendly. The kids in the neighborhood always seemed to make their way over toward his house and he was awesome about throwing the football around with them and talking with them. Great guy and a really nice family. Proud to have him represent the University of Iowa.

Actually, Greenway played very well this last year. He had struggled the previous couple of years and saw his snap count down early in the year but came on to play very well. How he played during the second half of last season is the reason the Vikings were looking to bring him back. That and his leadership qualities. I think it was widely believed that last year was going to be his last. As a Viking fan, I wished he would have had a few more seasons under Zimmer because I think he could have shined even more with his defensive scheme.
