What do you do when you arrive at a location that prohibits guns? Say you're on a date and your partner wants to go to some art museum that runs people through a metal detector. You arrive with your gun on your person not realizing there will be a problem. Assumimg you want to go into the building, what do you do? Do places like that check the gun for you like they often will do for larger bags. Do you leave it in the car? Are there other options?

Think most people just leave it in the vehicle. At least that was a common response I came upon when researching taking a gun on vacation. (We usually camp out for a night or so and I take an old shotgun or revolver just in case.)

Any place having a metal detector I would know about before hand and probably leave at home. Same goes for schools. If your vehicle is on school property leaving it there can could still get you in big trouble.

I tend to avoid businesses that have a no firearms policy. Not necessarily because I want to carry a firearm there (I don't carry all the time) but because I do believe there is some truth these places can be a magnet for criminals knowing they will have unarmed prey both in the business and walking to/from their vehicle.

That said I have carried many times into businesses with a no firearms policy because I didn't realize it till I got to the door and to me going back and ditching my piece (In plain sight) in my vehicle isn't an option. Not too worried about someone spotting my piece and I'm even more careful about concealment if carrying in a no firearm business.

Sorry natural, I missed the part about places checking guns. Outside of some public safety buildings and jails (which require firearms being checked) I'm not aware of businesses that will check your firearm.

Personally I would not check it even if available.

I was surprised to hear one of my friends at church and her husband both conceal-carry everywhere they go; church, movies, restaurants, grocery shopping, work, etc.

She has a 9 MM and he has a 50 caliber S & W.

I asked why. She said, we have all the necessary training and permits and we don't want to be caught in a public place with a gunman and helpless. He'll be in for a surprise. These people are avid hunters and great community people.

I've said it a ton on here. People would be absolutely blown away with how many people conceal carry. I know plenty of women that do.

So, if you are a crook looking to steal a gun, staking out places that restrict guns might make sense. Watch for the people who leave guns in their cars, then smash and grab.

Compared to other places in our country we have a low smash and grab rate in Iowa. Most places around here it is only an issue at Xmas as opposed to year round elsewhere. IMO people here are a little naive and/or careless about what they leave in their vehicle and who may be watching them when they pull into a parking lot.

I have an acquaintance who lives in a large city who takes gun security more seriously than we do here. He keeps a metal lockbox in his trunk that is chained to an I bolt in the trunk floor. The box can be used to secure other valuables as well and the chain can be unfastened and removed from the trunk if not needed. By no means foolproof but he was told by an attorney that his setup will go a long way in CYA if he has a firearm stolen.

It must suck to live a life terrified of everyone all the time.

I read natural's op and didn't think it would get much attention. I guess I am naïve at how many people (non law enforcement) there are that carry guns around frequently.

What do people do with their grenades in a similar situation?

I wouldn't know about grenades....whenever I get a fresh batch they go straight to my favorite fishing hole and I fill the freezer!!

Mine sit in my car underneath my gun when I go into a gun free zone. That will teach anyone trying to steal my gun.

How does one conceal a .50 caliber handgun? I know there is a snubnose 5-short version but good luck getting off well aimed shots in succession with that recoil.

Th advantage of the snub .50 SW is that you have a combination gun/flamethrower.

I had a lockbox in the center console of my truck where I'd leave my gun when I went somewhere I couldn't carry. Then someone broke into my truck and stole the lockbox. Luckily there was no gun in there. I'm not dissuaded from carrying though. I still carry fairly frequently.

So being prepared is being terrified? Quite the opposite, it's as natural as grabbing my wallet or cell phone. Don't think much of it, but am always prepared if I need to use it.

If no metal detector then I simply wear it, worst thing to happen is they could ask me to leave. I can't recall the last time I actually paid any attention to those signs.

Yeah because I always yell out loud, "Hey! Look at me! I'm leaving my gun inside my car while I go inside! I hope nobody smashes my window and steals my very nice GUN!!!!"

Get real WWJD. You're smarter than this.

They don't go to those places because according to them they are the most dangerous places in the world. :p

JK . . . I'm sure they probably just leave it in the car.

I almost questioned her about that, but she seems to know her guns. My guess is the hubby is carrying a smaller S & W.
