Excitement is building for Year 1 of the TJ Otzelberger era at Iowa State. With the season just a few short weeks away, preseason lists and awards are starting to trickle out. This edition of the Cyclones features a number of interesting transfers, plus a highly touted point guard that many see as the future of the program. It looks as though other Big 12 coaches have noticed. The league’s preseason poll was released on Thursday afternoon and Iowa State has managed to crack the top 10.
It’s a nice showing coming off a winless conference season, and in a league this competitive, it’s a good place to start. Time will tell if we can rise to the levels of the past decade. For now, we’ll accept our place on the pecking order.
As for the rest of the poll, Kansas takes a familiar place as the likely 2nd round March Madness upset. Defending national champion Baylor is 2nd among Big 12 schools. The league should easily lead the way in Kenpom strength yet again. Look out for Kansas State to surprise people by still employing Bruce Weber.
