Happy birthday, Iowa!
On Dec. 28, 1846, Iowa became the 29th state in the Union when President James Knox Polk signed the bill into law.
But if you can’t find 169 birthday candles in the kitchen junk drawer, allow us to recommend a different way to celebrate: Check out the Iowa 101 history series at DesMoinesRegister.com/Iowa101.

Curated over the past few months by Graceland University historian Tom Morain of Lamoni, the seven-part series of short videos and readings explores how Iowa’s borders were drawn, what life was like for early immigrants, how pioneers celebrated Christmas – even how Iowa got its Hawkeye nickname. (We lucked out. Back then our neighbors to the east were known as the Illinois “Suckers”; and to the south, the Missouri “Pukes.”)
So think of the series as a free mini-course in history, without any pesky assignments or tests, offered through a Register partnership with Graceland, Des Moines Area Community College and Humanities Iowa.
