It's been a messed up year. Lost my Mom, health problems, and had to put my dog Jake down a few days ago. Don't have kids, so my dogs are kind of like my kids. My truck didn't get stolen so the country song isn't complete. 2016 has 26 minutes to kick me in the nuts one more time. Guess what tho...still standing and a some of that has to do with the sport we all love. Learned a lot out on those mats growing up as I'm sure you all did as well. I have 31 days until I retire and it looks like my wife is taking the job in IC. I'll get us up there and settled in March/April, have her start her job and than will be looking to get a job or start my masters at Iowa in the fall. God bless you all, Iowa wrestling and I hope the worst thing you all have to deal with in the morning is a bad hangover.

Had to put my dog down this year also. She was blind and deaf and got under one of my truck tires and I had to send my wife to her mom's, told her to turn up the music and come back in an hour and it was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. I would rather wrestle Gable or Cael in their primes. Then again probably not.

Has your wife ever experienced Iowa in winter? My coldest memory ever was changing fuel filters on a gelled up rig up in Spencer one Jan. in the middle 80's. Take care chief-on your health of course...

Happy New Year to All of you out there. Good health also.

Looks like season tickets are in the future for Azchief soon enough. And a trip to the Iowa City Animal Shelter for a cute little thing looking for a Forever Home.

If you start your masters your eligibility clock starts. Better tell brands he's got more than a room guy in you.

Sweet, I'll have a place to stay for all the Freestyle events in Iowa City! ;)

Happy New Year Chief, and all you other Hawkeye Yahoo's!

Happy new year to all. Sorry to hear of the rough year Chief. Hard to keep things into perspective as life locomotes on. The beginning of life is the beginning of the journey to death. Hard to lose the people and pets we love. Drugs and alcohol cheat us out of valuable time. Hope everyone avoids the hangover. From the most uninteresting man in the world, "stay thirsty and sober my friend".

Ours couldn't get up on his feet anymore...He was a few days from laying around in his in own poop...it all happened so fast. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done as well.

We spent spent a winter up in Omaha and we met in Idaho where it can get pretty cold. It started snowing in Omaha the day before I got back from Korea in 03 and felt like it didn't stop until March. Summer in Tucson is from April until October. In July, you don't see anybody outside too far away from the A/C that doesn't have to be until early evening so it will be nice to see the seasons change and actually do something outside during the day. Luckily, she will have from April-November to get acclimated...she really likes the Midwest.

KWood...thanks for the karmic tips. I think I will look up Jim to see where he can put me to work but will probably spend a lot of time volunteering at the V.A. since it will be right down the road. Some of those guys outlive their families and no longer have anybody around so its nice to go in there and swap old war stories and just listen to them talk. Eventually, I will have to get back to the grind of an everyday job...and it will probably be serving them in some capacity.

Awesome idea about volunteering at the VA, chief! I'm sure you could be a tremendous resource for the vets there. Way back in the day, I had the honor of taking care of vets at the IC VA for a couple of rotations. Still remember some of those guys like it was yesterday. As you say, some were without any family support at all. Hats off for planning to help out over there -- I'm sure it will be rewarding for you.

As for losing your pooch, it's always brutal. They're family, just as much as any human. We lost one a couple of years ago and have another one getting up in years and starting to struggle. It's tough to watch, but it's also great that we can be there for them and comfort them along the way. Plus, there's nothing like the loyalty and love of a dog. We get much more than we give.

Chief - Had to put one of my dogs down this summer as well. We endured all the stress of trying to PCS from overseas with two labs: the oversized weight of the dogs, temperatures along the way, multiple homes/hotels, and sending the family in two different directions. I made the trip from Tokyo to D.C. by myself with the dogs (brother and sister from the same litter) and arrived at billeting after 11 pm without a car or workable phone and in a new city. I took them for a walk and then I fed them, only to discover his stomach twisted. Had a stressful time trying to find a vet without a cell phone after midnight, and then trying to get a cab that would take an 85-lb dog when I couldn't explain directions on the military installation (you know how building numbers work on base...I arrived in the dark after traveling for 24 hours and had no frame of reference). I had to put him down that night; what a hollow feeling. I'm glad that was my last military move.

I know my experience doesn't compare to losing family members and suffering serious health issues, but I felt I should commiserate nonetheless. Keep your head up bro.

Dang, AF. That's a brutal story. Rough trip, to say the least.

If your dogs or humans for that matter suffer from stiff joints, an inflammatory condition, I have found that TURMERIC works wonders. Just do some searches and come up with your specific recipe. The stuff really works.

BTW, i'm working on one of my NYD resolutions. You'll know how that works out for me...

That sucks bro...very sorry to hear that. We were very worried about getting our three dogs up to Iowa and how the cold was going to affect Jake. A trip from Japan would have drove us nuts.

Yea, the bldg # thing sucks when you are new or TDY. As in, "Go right out on the street, down a block and it's Bldg #10." Turns out there are 20 buildings down the block and its night. Thanks a lot!

My lab gets a tablespoon of a coconut oil and turmeric powder mixture twice a day on his food... Also is proven to reduce the risk of cancer later in life.

My heart goes out to anyone who loses a dog. A dogs love is like no other.

Thanks for the suggestion, Gobblin. I take it that mixture is good for any breed, huh? Might have to start that in our home.

Coconut oil and turmeric haven't been proven to do anything, and it's easy to overdo it on the fats, but if it seems to be helping and your vet knows, keep on keeping on.

Sorry about the tough year, AZ. Saying goodbye to a pet is awful...be glad you were able to give him a good life.

And I know a house that will probably be for sale this spring...nothing fancy, but really convenient location. I'm sure the owner can give you a good deal on it. :)

I own a show style English Lab and his breeder recommended it in his diet until he's 15 months. Helps thier bones develop thick and she says turmeric helps with cancer prevention when older. She is also a vet.

Merry New Years Chief.
2016 sucked worse for me (don't want to air it here) - But I'm still an Iowa guy / Farm Strong.
I'm sure 2017 will be my best year ever.

Hope so too brother.

So far, my sports stuff is starting off great with our showing at Midlands (I know, technically last year but so what), Chiefs winning the AFC West. Now all Iowa has to do is kick the hell out of Florida tomorrow and I am all good.

2017 will be a great year. FACT. Looking into my crystal ball... Around this time next year we will be fondly reminiscent of great times:

-Iowa running the field in the regular season of 2017 prior to NCAAs
-Iowa winning the 2017 B1G Team title, with multiple champs.
-Iowa winning the 2017 NCAA Championships, with 4 finalists and 2 Champs, 9 AAs
-Iowa getting great class of 2018 commitments in the off season, cough.. Brands... cough .. sasso.. cough.. steveson..
-Iowa running the field in the regular season of 2017 prior to midlands
-Congratulating Spencer Lee, Brandon Sorensen, Michael Kemerer, Jacob Warner, and Sam Stoll on their Midlands titles.

:)

I was going to go with Perez Perez for Midlands but yea, I guess Spencer will do. You might not be far off the mark for Midlands next year.
