We always hear Brands talk about the work that needs to be done. Tom Ryan has mentioned many times about the amount of suffering that needs to be done to be successful. Cael talks about fun. Are they using different words to describe the same thing?
I think it says something about their personalities and outlook on life, but I am not sure exactly what to make of it.
Thoughts, anyone?

Oh by the way, great win last night. I was suffering thru the hard work of having fun at trivia night at a friends church. Had to miss the meet.

Good catch. I believe all three are talking about the same thing through the prism of their own individual thought process and what the mental process was for them to be successful in this sport and how they approach life. There is no wrong answer here, but to recruits, there may be. Hard work is a given, but if you describe hard work as suffering, I think you lose a lot of kids and parents nowadays. Ryan is successful though so what do I know.

that is the thing. In his interview after the Iowa meet, Ryan said that Colin Moore suffered all summer. He trained at the OTC in colorado etc and that is what made him so good. Earlier, (years ago) in an interview, Ryan said they thought they were going to win a team title years ago, but they had not suffered enough. Then a few years ago, it finally happened. I am not sure what he means by suffering, but he sure throws the word around.

Winning is fun and PSU had done more of it than anyone recently obviously. That said I get the impression rolling with Cunningham involves some suffering and their guys are better having endured it. The same holds true for our guys who practiced w Metcalf and McD. Hawks have plenty of fun as well but anyone is gonna have to suffer to some extent to get to the top of the podium.

Cael is winning Championships, he is having more fun than the others. He wasn't that jovial at ISU.

This.

The whole "having fun" schtick is bunch of BS. Part of the PSU propaganda to hit prospective HS recruits with.

The amount of hard work and pain to accomplish the desired goal is probably similar in top programs. When you win the championship, there are smiles all around, and it's "fun".... when you come in 3rd or 5th or whatever else... not so much.
