Has anyone been in a very uncomfortable situation with a dude being not so "gentlemanly" to his wife in public?

Yeah. At as sports bar. Drunk dude was berating and pushing around his lady. A friend in my party knew the couple and said the guy was a mean drunk. They were neighbors. My friend went up to the guy and told him he and his wife were going to stop by and make a welfare check on the wife the next morning. If he rejected that idea, my friend was going to call 911 right then. My friend said the woman needs to leave the bastard, but won't.
I saw a man pushing his woman around once at the store, and I told that punk he better knock it off. He pulled a gun out on me but I round house kicked it and it flew in the air. I then caught the .22 LR and .22 long rifle slapped the man with it. The woman who was a 10 out of 10 was super impressed and we did sex right then and there and the crowd clapped.
A verbal disrespect that isn't threatening, I would not get involved in. If it was physical, then yes I would get involved enough to break it up until law enforcement arrived.
OP, I am curious if the genders were reversed and a woman was disrespecting her man and he was just steady taking it, would you have also said something similar to the man? Why or why not?

Right out of high school a couple buddies and I were cruising around and saw a guy push a girl done in front of a Catholic church.
We got out talked some shit to him and offered her assistance but she wanted no part of help. You could tell she knew he was going to beat her later but nothing we could do about it.

There was a popular DM Area Restaurant Owner (now deceased) who was very abusive verbally and physically with his wives and also his employees in his restaurants.
He traded up to the wrong model. The latest greatest model was a martial artist who put him in the hospital. He had a shit fit while she was moving her stuff out (with police escort) while he was still in the hospital.
Lot of folks had a good laugh over that one.

I have been in exactly two fights my entire life (I'm 51), neither worked out well for me. I was good at breaking them up as I got bigger, that's it. No clue what I would have done if old boy started throwing fist sandwiches, but actions like that can't go unrecognized.
Agree. 49-yr old me has a family and kids to think about. Getting shot by some dipshit has a lot deeper consequences than it would have to 22 year old me. Of course, if 22 year old me saw this post, he'd probably be shaking his head in disappointment, but screw 22-year old me. I'm not sure I'd like that guy if I met him anyway.

Across the way lived a couple that screamed at each other a lot. I tried to ignore it until I heard a loud crash/breaking sound and the wife scream in pain.
I immediately called 911, and was put on hold...for over an hour 😳.
Eventually police came and told him to leave and find someplace else to crash for a bit. He walked away. Too bad he returned a couple days later.

When I was 16-17ish I was on the Mississippi River with a buddy. We stopped at a sandbar to throw shoes and hang out. We quickly realize this one guy absolutely berating his wife/gf calling her names and pushing her around. After a few min of the guys rant (pretty sure he was loaded) this old dude steps in probably like 60-65 but this dude was big. Not like fat but just a large human, think offensive lineman. He had heard enough of the drunk guys shit and absolutely clocked him in the nose. Cut the dude open and blood flowing. Old guy throws him a towel and tells him to clean himself up.

I was working at a bar and a lady was dancing on a table. There were these guys all around her going "ya baby wooo" and being all gross. I sent a guy over to get her down and tell them to cool it. They pulled a switchblade on him. I grabbed the dudes wrist and put his head thru the table. Then I helped the girl down. Then the blind guitar player in the band said " The name is Fan In Black" and everyone cheered.
