Has anyone else noticed we have not recruited any DT's

for next year. I know some of you will say that we have recruited 5 DE's and a few will be bulked-up by Doyle and moved inside. I believe however, that we have to recruit a couple of true DT's who played in HS and are already in the 260-280 range. They only have to be "toned-up" instead of adding 40 to 50 lbs. first.

Actually I agree. Javon Swann is considering us...he would be a huge get. M. Slater a true frosh I think will play inside #94.

I'd almost rather have DE's that end up morphing into DT's. The main reason being they are usually quicker and have that get to the QB mindset. I'm not saying that we don't need true DT's, but we need to hold out for a really good one to come around. Until then I'm just fine turning DE's into DT's. It's worked for us over and over again in the past. Just like we turn TE's into OT's or LB's into DE's. It's who we are, that's what we do, and are probably one of the best in the nation at doing that.

DT is the hardest position to recruit. Always has been.

Yeah, big un's are hard to find for sure. And there aren't near as many farms, and hence more big ol' farm kids to choose from that fit that bill in the Midwest. That's a pisser in and of itself.

What is wrong with building up a prospective DT? If we needed them to contribute from day-one, then I'd understand the concern. But we won't need to rely upon that.

Right now, Iowa has 4 guys they like to rotate at DT - Johnson, Bazata, Ekakatie, and Terlouw
Of those guys, 3 are juniors and 1 is a sophomore.

Additionally, the Hawks have 2 other guys on the roster at DT - Gressel and Slater
One is a SO and the other is a true FR.

As for the DE recruits from the '16 recruiting class - as others have stated, Lattimore has a BIG, athletic body. He's essentially one of those guys of the Christian Ballard mold. He'll likely be capable of playing either on the interior or on the outside. I also like Austin Schulte as being a bit like a Karl Klug starter-kit.

I agree that it would be a great to land a quality DT in the '16 class. After all, 3 of our top 4 DTs are juniors and will graduate after the '16 season.

They are still trying to get Swann but they have a couple they think can move inside. Obviously they don't think all will end up as DEs

Iowa is looking at a kid out of Iowa Western (Tommy Peterson) who played for the 3A Washington. Iowa originally looked at him as an o-linemen in high school but he switched to D-line at Juco and has been real impressive. I know it is juco but, he is 6-3, 310 lbs and leads his team in sacks and tackles for a loss.

I had to check the roster to be sure but the Iowa coaches still have Brady Reiff as a DT. Reiff was a two-time SD State heavyweight wrestling champ even though at around 210-215 he often competed anywhere from 10-30 pounds lighter than his competition. He did not wrestlr his senior HS year in order to enroll at Iowa early. Here is a clip of his sophomore championship match where he won by pin

If he can get to 275 or so I think he can compete for some playing time at DT next year.

There is nothing wrong with bringing in the right Juco.

Rivals has Cedrick Lattimore (2016) listed as a DE but he is definitely DT. In 2017, Juan Harris counts as 2 DTs even though he will use only one scholarship.
Depending on whether he stays committed this time. I'm hoping he's done with the wishy washy commitment status.

Wow, that was impressive. I think they said the guy he beat hadn't lost all year either. He looks like he could easily put on the extra weight. Definitely someone to follow right there.

Maybe the Hawkeye coaches are confident of getting "5 star" AJ Epenesa & "4 star" Juan Harris in 2017.

I think both of those guys from Michigan would be perfect to go inside. Big dudes with some athleticism would be great. Especially if they could get to 300lbs. 6-5 300lbs is a handful kind of a Carl Davis mold.
