Has Fran received a technical yet this season

I’ll admit I’ve missed more Iowa games than I’ve watched this year, but the games I’ve seen I can’t remember any Fran T’s.

I’d be curious if anybody wants to do the research & post if he’s had one yet.

Also, I wonder what his season average for technicals is throughout his years at Iowa.
I actually tried finding the stats for this the other day and couldn’t find anything.

Its more a curiosity than anything. Sure testosterone decreases with age, but there appears to be a clear change of his in-game demeanor.

Behaviorally it is a marked change...and it is reasonable to speculate the cause as an Iowa fan.

Burn-out, meds, maturity?...who knows. Something is different...especially this year. Maybe he just knows the team is mediocre and isn't as invested as much at an emotional level.

He’s known it’s over since October & it’s obvious.

But that’s just what I heard. What do I know?

A coach that’s known for outbursts every year of his career doesn’t even get red faced anymore.

Barely stands up.

This no technicals thing in year 15 (or whatever) is exactly the norm of all hot headed coaches in year 15. 🤦🏽‍♂️

Just guessing, but I’m thinking the AD has him on a very short leash when it comes to sideline behavior.

So much that the B1G felt comfortable enough to put that “cheating MF’er” Steve McJunkins back out there to officiate.

When he was getting technicals he was called out-of-control, hot headed, bad example for his players, etc,etc....

It is an interesting point, but total bullshit as an argument for or against his position as coach...
Completely disagree. I always loved fireworks Fran. He was exactly what we needed after listless Licklieter. His lack of passion this season tells me everything I need to know. He’s done.

Beth and the Pres told him to tone it down

No doubt they did at some, or several, points along the way...but someone in power telling a person to simply 'calm down' if they have a sustained pattern of Fran-con level explosive anger outbursts at work...it is not a consistently effective intervention strategy. Other factors might also be contributing.

Flying off the handle and getting T'ed up never helps anything. It doesn't make players play harder, and sometimes it digs the hole from what may have been a bad call or series of bad calls even deeper. At this point, I just want to see an Iowa team that defends and rebounds like those things actually matter.

FWIW, I talked to someone who knows Fran pretty well and he said Fran still has the desire to coach, and a lot of fire. He believes that Fran has toned it down because his brother had a debilitating stroke 1-2 years ago. Fran recognized they are the same type of personality. Fran and his brother are close, and he is about the only direct family Fran has left, and Fran has recognized he needed to make changes to be around for his family.

So, he decided to continue drawing the big checks but stop actually coaching during games. It would seem to me if all that is true, he would get out of the profession and retire with his family. No disrespect intended to poster JMO.

Like I’ve been saying…..Fran isn’t going anywhere. Unless he is fired. Which I don’t think happens.

Wow, a lot of people around here used to criticize Fran for his outbursts now it's that he doesn't have any passion. But nobody really cares. That's why there are pages and pages of threads about Iowa basketball
When you don’t win at a level people expect they are going to complain.

Ranting and raving like a psycho.
Standing there like you fell asleep at church.

A certain percentage are not going to be happy in way or another or both.

Basically win or get dumped on. Nothing new when it comes to coaching.

His kids aren’t on the team.

That’s too bad if that’s the case with Fran and I understand where he’s coming from. With that being said, if that is a concern, being a HC in the Big Ten, probably isn’t the best solution.

I was always concerned that MSU coach Judd Heathcote would someday stroke out during a game.
He started the game angry and got more demonstrably agitated as the game progressed.

He hasn’t. Even after that over-and-back BS call. Which is how we know that he no longer cares.
Are you talking about the call where the ball didn't even go "over"? If it did go over the leap and catch was in the front court........I watched that 10x and couldn't believe the announcers didn't mention the ball didn't cross the centerline. I was starting to think I was crazy because I just kind of agreed w/ it and moved on.....but in the back of my mind kept questioning it.........

In the old days, yelling and being hot-headed were typical coach behavior. Now there's a greater recognition that such behaviors aren't motivational for a lot of people, and can even be detrimental. Rather than not caring, maybe Fran thinks this group needs a different approach.

I personally enjoyed Francon it was entertaining.
I know someone mentioned it does nothing to the team, that all depends. It probably does less from a motivational standpoint if you constantly see it but if it is a rarity, it will fire you up.
As far as calls with officials, it depends on the coach. Look at MSU, if coach lizzo gets on a ref, he gets some favorable calls shortly after. Fran, not so much.

As one other poster mentioned, I believe his kids no longer being on the team has made the difference. I’m sure there is a different level of intensity when your kids are out on the court and you aren’t getting the calls you think you should be.

Agreed on the situational motivation for getting mad. It can be very effective if saved for rare occasions.

Fran was intense before his sons were on the team, so I don't think that part has mattered. He was toned down last year, too, and Patrick was still around.

The legacy of Hayden + Kirk is really impressive in terms of sustained success, however I think even Iowa fans would have to concede that Judd + Izzo is way more impressive.
Off topic here, but whenever David Johnson graduated and went to the Cardinals, I was 100% in his corner. After a terrific 2016 season (going off the top of my head here), then the injury bug got him. I felt pretty bad for David. Just thought I'd quick-share that.

So to summarize the various theories:

His relative had a stroke n he toned it down intentionally for his own health purposes.
He is doing it intentionally mainly for psychological reasons because of his deep understanding of the makeup of the team as it could be considered a passive microagression and lead to worsened play.
He is manopausing.
He is simply burned-out in general and doesn't care anymore, especially since his kids are gone.
He still cares, but knows the team is just mediocre this year.
He got an advanced heads-up of a buyout and this is secretly his last year and he is checked-out.
He got an ultimatum from Beth...but this is not his last year _unless he goes FranCon 10 again.
He is secretly physically ill.
He is on calming meds.

Am i missing something?

I think the buy out one is the correct answer.
