Has that ever happened before?

Frosh Valencia majors his way thrust Midlands! Solid.
Check Gables 1st Midlands, which I think he won before he could wrestle Varsity (I'm betting his bracket was considerably tougher in those days as well). Doubt he matched Valencia, but wouldn't shock me either.

Anyway, 174 wasn't the most ferocious weight class at Midlands, but Valencia breezed through it, which is damn hard to do regardless. This just in................. he good. Love the kids frame for a 174 lber. He's going to be tough to deal with for the next 4 years for sure.

A couple of years ago Anthony and some kid named Hall squared off in the Who's #1 match. #1 Anthony vs #2 Hall. There was some trash talk going into the match from Valencia. ( probably for effect and to hype up the match ) Hall was quiet and went in and won 10-2. I have a feeling there will be some future match ups between those two.

Me too. It's just that his win didn't make me hate him or ASU. Surprises me that anyone would hold that win against them all these years later. But hey, to each their own.

Btw, I've met and spent some time with Anthony. He's a fantastic guy.
I don't have anything against him. I just hate that he won......and maybe the fact that everyone cheered a little more even prior to the match because it was against an Iowa wrestler.

Valencia's a stud, but kind of apples and oranges when comparing to Gable.

Back when Gable won his first Midlands (Dec 1966), he had just turned 18 years old two months prior. Outside of Iowa HS wrestling and two months at ISU, Gable didn't have a lot of wrestling experience.

The competition at Midlands included some real talented post grads as well as college kids. It was more competitive back then, most would agree.

Gable beat Don Behm in the semis 10-5. Behm would finish as ncaa runnerup that season. Behm went on to win World Silver in 1968. In the finals Gable beat former ncaa champ and former World medalist Hatta 8-3.

I'm missing the part about where I was comparing anyone.

This is the Thread Title: Has that ever happened before? (in reference to a freshman majoring his way thru Midlands - i.e. - Z. Valencia)

This is my answer, off the top of my head: Check Gables 1st Midlands, which I think he won before he could wrestle Varsity (I'm betting his bracket was considerably tougher in those days as well). Doubt he matched Valencia, but wouldn't shock me either.

So in other words everything I laid out was correct (it wasn't by accident - ;)).

Regardless.... Asu will be tough next year...everyone coming back plus Tsirtis and Milhoff in the line up. Not Iowa tough but prob top 5.

Chill 23. Rossell was agreeing with you and just adding some supporting facts.

ZV is about the biggest 174 pounder I ever saw. He looked like he had 20 lbs on Weatherspoon.

Frankly I wasn't sure what his point was. It implied to me that I was making a comparison, which was clearly not the case. Believe it or not I was trying to be polite, while still explaining my position. If that was wrong, then I'm wrong and I'll have to live with it, which I will. I have no issues with the gentleman, I didn't understand his point, that is all.

Both of the Valencia boys have been masters at weight cutting for years. I remember those boys showing up at Tulsa Kick Off or Tulsa Nationals sucked down to bare bones then rehydrating and filling back up and plowing through the competition back in the 10U years. They were huge back then against the competition. They were obviously doing it the right way. Look at them now.

I don't understand what you just said..........

Could you be more ambiguous so I could care less...........

You don't like ASU because that "one legged guy" named Anthony Robles beat your boy. I just see it a bit childish, IMO.
I never said I don't like ASU......I just don't want them to win.
Bur anyway, that's nothing. You should see my hatred for USC football.

I feel no shame in either by the way, but you can go ahead and call it whatever you want. I won't mind(care). ;)

And don't forget all the posters who think that Robles had an unfair advantage having only one leg. Of course that advantage didn't apply early in his career.

I just wish you guys would quit using those damn big words like ambiguous!

This is an Iowa board for God's sake, not Cornell!;)

He beat Zac Brunson 8-3, but yes every one else he beat by bonus points, impressive.
Thanks for the clarification. Still a nice tourney for sure, but not factual that he majored his way thru. He's just like a bunch of other chumps then.................;)

23, you did say "check Gable's Midlands," which is what I decided to do, and then noted some of the differences. No offense intended.

And everything you said off the top of your head was indeed correct.

Happy New Year!
