I really, really noticed it last night. Maybe it was because the Wisky players were really using their backsides to correctly block out the hawks or what.

But the Iowa players including the shooter just do not move when a shot goes up, especially their shots. If an opponent is blocking them out our players do not do much to try to get around them but instead just stay blocked out. Not sure if they have tired legs or are mentally tired.

In comparison, I always thought Keegan Murray was very active moving and slicing in for rebound position and many times somehow getting a rebound.

Anyway, the hawks just need to move and battle for rebounds a little better and maybe it is time to start crashing the boards when a shot goes up as most teams do not like to fast break while playing us.

Darryl Moore would be ashamed.
haha, yes. And I will try to remember Lute Olson's leading rebounder who was from Iowa City and only about 6' 4".

We know the hawks mainly lost because of really poor shooting but in the first half they were hustling and getting some rebounds, forcing turnovers, forcing fouls to get free throws but that didnt happen in the 2nd half. That is what makes me wonder if they have lost their legs.

But let's play Kris for 39 minutes in a blow out win over Ohio State.

Clay Hargrave was his name iirc, had a huge vertical but was not a good shooter. very good defender

Patrick McCaffrey is just not interested in fighting for rebounds. In contrast, you see the smaller Peyton Sandfort bodying big men under the basket, willing to loosening a few teeth for a chance at a ORB put back bucket. You have to put yor effort players on the floor, especially against a team like the Badgers. PM's laziness is maddening... and he is still prone to dribble aimlessly into the lane then get stuck in traffic.

They all battle in there for boards except Patrick. It’s crazy. Idk why he doesn’t think he needs to mix it up in there or why it’s not demanded from the staff.

FWIW, I am a casual basketball observer, but I watched a lot of the game last night besides missing a zillion 3 pointers all night, this was my impression too. We sure don't seem to fight for rebounds.

Maybe I see it that way because back when I used to play some rec BB I would take rebounding, and steals, very seriously and work hard to get them. From the couch last night, it didn't look like we were really active on positioning on a number of shots. Who knows?

That's because you're an old wrestling fan and rebounding is the closest aspect of grappling that basketball has. 😊

It's because we had to get back on defense due to Wisconsin's fast pace of play (/S).

Kris played pretty soft on rebounding tonight. This team cannot afford anything less than 100% effort.
I feel empathy for Patrick. He’s simply not the same slasher/shooter he was. Wish him well!

Clay was Iowa's Rodman and a friend of mine.
I used to work with his mother...so there. :) :) Nice lady.
My one claim to fame, I guarded Clay Hargrave for most of the game in a summer league game at CR Prairie in summer of 75. This must have been the summer before his freshman year at Iowa. Of course, we all heard about him. He's two years older than myself.

This was a predecessor (think poor man's PTL where local HS and small time college players played (we might have had to be nominated by our area HS / college coaches, I don't recall)). At the time, there were no AAU or summer leagues to speak of. If I recall correctly, he didn't play many games - probably practicing with the IA team but for some reason he played occasionally.

Clay was pretty checked out the entire game - playing against clearly inferior talent. He pretty much went through the motions until one play; by natural instinct he grabbed an offensive board and slammed it home in what seemed to be one motion. Perhaps the most athletic play I've personally experienced on the court. I just sort of smiled and shook my head at what I just saw. He didn't even acknowledge what just happened as I recall.

He was pleasant, no smack, no attitude, just played.

That is on Fran. I don't think it is good for pay raises/job security assistant coach to go against Fran, especially related to his two boys. I think PMAC is making more effort right now that in the past...he's never been held accountable for guards blowing by him and him nearly always whiffing on the shot block or failing to put his body into the scrum and actually fight for a rebound. It is little bit ironic that that part of the game comes naturally to CMAC but CMAC is the lessor athlete/size.

Yeah. Good guy. Haven't seen him except for a funeral for a mutual friend down in Florida about 10 years ago now. As we age that becomes the standard reunion event. ☹️ Aside from a few gray hairs he looked exactly like those days back in the Liner.

One word... "SOFT".

Too many of Fran's teams can claim this description too.

Appreciate what Fran has done, but I'm ready to move on. Just a casual observer at this point, not going to get too excited for his teams, as their "soft side" always shows up at the worst time (tournament time)

(Edit: Rebraca is NOT soft. Love his effort and major growth since last year)

Didn't grades get the best of Hargrave?
Honestly I can't recall. That was the year before I arrived in I.C. I do know that he (at 6'4") was the shortest player to lead the B1G in rebounding during the 77-78 year which was his last. That takes effort and athleticism.

This….this is not new in the Fran era…the staff has never put a huge emphasis on rebounding or defense or toughness as a team.

Fran’s style relies on shot making and a good whistle. If one of those are off, it’s going to be a struggle.

They do not fight for rebounds, at least in the first half, for fear of fouling and sitting on the bench the rest of the half.

McCaffery does not consistently reward players for effort, rebounds and/or defense and thus players stand around and watch a lot. If the head coach does not emphasize anything but offense, all you get is offense and when shots are not dropping, another L.

What do the assistants do during games, besides try to hold back Fran from the officials? Speraw always seemed to be actively coaching during games, especially when Fran would get a little lost or down. Taylor too. This demure group seems to just sit there.

Fran is a mediocre coach. Really good on offense, despite the fact that we can shoot right now, and below average on defense. He has no clue when he’s supposed to call a timeout and his rotations some nights almost seem like he’s trying to lose on purpose.
When you throw his kids into the mix, it’s even worse. As a father, how are you going to bench your kid who’s been struggling with mental health? But he flat out sucks shouldn’t be playing. Connor, when he feels like it can be pretty good. But his shooting as been embarrassing, and sometimes he’s just not in the mood. But that won’t change his minutes on his daddy’s team. Nepotism U strikes again!

Awful to nonexistent defensive/rebounding effort and fundamentals have pissed me off since early in the Fran era when we were realizing what we had. It's just shitty, lazy coaching. But after Barta being on the job for 16 years or whatever it's been I've accepted that you can only expect to be good on one side of the ball and better prepare to be dogshit on the other in the big 2 sports. It is what it is. The Iowa way
