Tip Time: 6:01 p.m.

TV: ESPNU – Adam Amin and Craig Robinson on the call.

History: This will be the third meeting between the Hawkeyes and the Scarlet Knights. The two schools met one other time before last season in the NCAA Tournament with the Hawkeyes winning 87-73. Last year they met for the first time as Big Ten foes, with Iowa winning at home 81-47.

THE LINE: Iowa is a 22.5 point favorite.

PLAYER TO WATCH

Adam Woodbury – If you look back to Monday’s game against Purdue, Rutgers was punished by the Boilers frontcourt players. They didn’t play long, but their centers scored at will against the undermanned Scarlet Knight frontcourt. Could this be the night that Woodbury puts together his highest scoring game as a Hawkeye? It’s certainly possible. Now, I think if this game gets out of hand that Fran McCaffery will rest Woodbury with Purdue looming on Sunday afternoon. Woodbury’s career best in points is 16, so keep an eye on that number. His career rebound number is 11, so keep an eye on that one as well.

KEY MATCH-UP - Corey Sanders vs. Anthony Clemmons – It will be freshman vs. senior if Sanders matches up with Clemmons. Mike Gesell could get some work on Sanders, but I think Clemmons will get the bulk of the work. Sanders is a talented young player. He was a four star recruit and Top 100 prospect last year, so a big time get for Coach Eddie Jordan. Of course, he’s shouldering a bigger load than expected due to injuries. Clemmons seems to be able to rise up to face the bigger challenges and has frustrated other high scoring guards, like Michigan State’s Bryn Forbes this season. Sanders is not only their leading scorer, but he also leads them in assists. The best guess here is that veteran teaches the youngster a bit of a lesion on Thursday night and holds him under his season average of 14 points per game.

STATS AND NOTES

This game has been designated by Rutgers as their “Blackout” game, which seems like an odd decision because Iowa’s road uniforms are usually black. The Hawkeyes will opt to wear their gold uniforms on Thursday evening. This will be kind of a homecoming game for Dom Uhl, who played his last two years of high school basketball in New Jersey. Dating back to last season, Iowa has won 11 straight regular season conference games. The 5-0 start in conference play is Iowa’s best start since 1996-97. Peter Jok was named Big Ten Player of the Week last week. He averaged 19.5 points per game in wins over Michigan State and Michigan. Jarrod Uthoff heads into this game with 991 career points and could reach 1,000 career points on Thursday evening. Uthoff also has 144 career blocks, which is 5th all-time in Iowa history. Mike Gesell has 469 career assists. He is closing in on Ronnie Lester for 5th all-time at Iowa. He had 480 career assists. Iowa is 2-2 this season in games played on Thursday. They are 1-0 this year in games on ESPNU. Iowa is 3-1 this year in true road games.

THE PICK

The Hawkeyes will look to move to 6-0 in Big Ten play on Thursday evening when they travel to Rutgers. Yes, Rutgers, who just lost on Monday night to Purdue by 50, yes, 50 points. Yep, they lost 107 to 57 and the Boilermakers had more rebounds than Rutgers had points.

Let’s face it, Rutgers is a mess right now. They are 0-6 in conference play and they are losing games in Big Ten play by 27 points per game. They are down three front court players who are injured and their bench is very limited. Yes, everyone remembers that Rutgers wasn’t good last year and they somehow rose up, shot 54% from the floor and beat Wisconsin. But, that was a Badger team that was without two starters and unless something strange happens, Iowa will have their full lineup with them. And, this Rutgers team is worse than last year’s squad.

This is one of those true tests of a good team and not looking past an opponent. If Rutgers has any pride left after the drubbing they took on Monday night, they are going to come out early and show some fight. How much fight do they actually have? Iowa has started fast in the last two weeks and if they do that on Thursday evening, the Scarlet Knights will likely go away fairly quickly. I don’t think Iowa will win by 50 points. But, I think Iowa will get a comfortable win that will allow Fran McCaffery to rest his starters late in the game. IOWA 85 RUTGERS 62.
