Hawkeye Women's Hoop season

We been sitting around the same people at women’s games for years. They’ve gone from strangers to good friends. At the end of periods when Iowa would hold the ball for a last shot, we would all groan. It seemed to end badly twice as often as ending well.

This year it is different. Go ahead and hold for the last shot. I know who is going to make something happen, and for once, I trust the outcome.

They said late in the broadcast that Iowa would stay as a 5 seed regardless of the result against Maryland. The only question now is whether the Committee is as high on Iowa as ESPN is. I think a 5 or 6 seed is most likely.
It wouldn’t shock me if they put Iowa as the 5 in UConn’s bracket to try and get a potential Clark/Bueckers matchup in the Sweet 16.

Looking ahead to next year (without knowing anything about transfers and what players will stay with the extra year) I can make a case for projecting Iowa as high as 2nd in the conference.

Maryland has most its core back. If Benzen and Bibby use their extra year, it could be a top 5 team. Iowa should return everyone and get some help in recruiting for depth. Indiana could lose Patberg and a couple key contributors, but return Berger and Holmes. Ohio State returns most its top contributors. That's my Top 4.

Michigan returns arguably its top 3 players, but could lose some contributors and really lacks outside shooting. Teams seemed to figure them out late. Northwestern could lose Pulliam and another contributor, but has a decent recruiting class coming. Michigan State returns most of its contributors and has a decently high rated recruit coming back. Each of these teams could also compete for Top 4 and should be tournament teams.

Rutgers is the only team I see with a chance to fall off significantly. Guirantes was very important for its offense, and it could also lose several key contributors. Diamond Johnson will be very good, but she can't do it on her own. Nebraska and Minnesota return most of their contributors and could both compete for an NCAA Tournament spot.

I'd expect Penn State, Purdue, Illinois, and Wisconsin to be bottom of the conference again. Of those Purdue probably has the best shot to move to the middle of the conference. I'd be shocked if Wisconsin wasn't dead last.

This is Patberg's what 7th year? I would not be surprised to see her come back if they have a scholarship available.

Purdue and Penn State have tons of talent. I think Penn State takes a big leap. I think Purdue could take a big leap but the future of Sharon Versyp is in question so things could change. I believe Purdue's longterm outlook is much better without Versyp and that if she is coaching next season, it will be her last. If she is let go before the season, Purdue will be a huge question mark. There's certainly a ton of talent and Madison Lehman is a star. Karissa Mcglaughlin could return considering her season was cut short. If Farquar returns or they can bring in a big through the transfer portal Purdue will be a force.

Penn State was the youngest team in the league this year and was competitive in almost every game. Nearly upset Iowa and played several teams to the wire. I think they have the potential to be an NCAA team next year.

If Kate Cain opts for a 5th year at Nebraska, the Huskers will also be very dangerous.

Iowa earns the 5th(!) seed and will play Central Michigan. If they win they will play Kentucky or Idaho State in the Round of 32. In the same Riverwalk region as UConn and would likely play UConn if they make the Sweet 16.

I think Iowa will make the sweet 16. I actually think Iowa is under seeded but we didn't do ourselves any favors. How many of our losses are to tournament teams and we have wins over Rutgers MSU ISU Michigan. I don't see us getting past UCONN w our bad perimeter defense but if we can shoot well we can give them a scare

Iowa should not have too many problems with Central Michigan. Then potentially two premier matchups with Rhyne Howard of Kentucky and hopefully then Paige Bueckers of UConn. Making the Sweet 16 would be incredible considering how this Iowa team was so inconsistent earlier in the year.

They are a guard oriented team with several good 3 point shooters. Interesting match up for Iowa Assistant Raina Harmon since she played and coached at CMU prior to coming to Iowa.

Central Michigan shoots a ton of threes (28.2 per game compared to 23.6 for Iowa). They don't make them at nearly the rate Iowa does (35.5% to 40.4% for Iowa) but if they get hot for a game, that could make things tough. Stopping 3 point shooting hasn't exactly been a strength for this team.

In terms of common opponents, Central Michigan lost to Michigan 93-75 in its season opener, and lost to Michigan State 79-70 in mid-December.

Versyp has done a decent job recruiting but she hasn't been able to coach her teams up the last 5 years. If their fans have their way, she is gone this year. Madison Layden is a good building block & their big 6'6 post (Ra Shaya Kyle) who took Warnock out is going to be a good one once she gets better conditioned. Their fans are hoping Fatou Diagne comes back to split time with Kyle. They have some good talent, just need the coach now.

Penn St. will get their '20 top 10 PG finally in Leilani Kapinus who suffered a 2nd ACL pre season. If she can come back close to where she was that could push them forward.

From what I have heard Kate Cain at Nebraska is moving on. Nebraska has some good talent though.

I wish we could convince Kate Cain to grad transfer to Iowa. She has the extended shooting range that Iowa lacks at Center. It would really help Iowa match up better with a lot of teams as more and more players with bigs who can shoot the 3. And with her skill set should could play along side Monica instead of just backing her up. If she is moving on from Nebraska she'll likely go pro though.

Yeah that matchup would certainly create more storylines than putting Io

Penn ST started the season with 8 freshmen and a transfer. By the end of the season, they were playing good ball.

Bump from page 6. Still have a shot at a bb sweet 16 tomorrow

Tomorrow will be a good measuring stick for Iowa and the Big Ten. The SEC has been a tournament stud since at least 2010, whereas the Big Ten for the same time period has been a weak sister. For her part, Bluder has, I believe, only 1 career tournament victory against a top 5 seed, and has never advanced to the Sweet 16 as a 4-6 seed (4 previous chances).

A victory tomorrow would be strong evidence that the Hawkeye optimists aren’t Pollyanna about Iowa becoming a legit top 15-20 team (or better). Conversely, a sound defeat that highlights Iowa’s athletic deficiencies might suggest that we should pump the brakes about Iowa becoming a top 15ish team (at least until we see if the ‘21 recruits can help with some of Iowa’s glaring weaknesses).

SEC might be down this year. UK struggled against ID state. Arkansas was upset. A&M on verge of upset.

I watched the first half of the UK/ID State game and UK did not look good. Poor shooting and struggled to defend especially in the first quarter. ID State went cold otherwise it might have been a different outcome.

I think Iowa has a good shot. We run a similar offense to ID State and have a true big which ID state was lacking. ID state had early success driving in the lane which bodes well for Clark. We need to hit our 3s but I like the matchup more after watching UK play.

Lisa describes Kentucky as an opportunity...

Caitlin compared them to Rutgers. I believe they are at a similar level as Indiana, OSU and Northwestern which accounted for six of Iowa’s nine loses. According to their seeding, Kentucky should be a slight favorite but I am still optimistic.

Looking at some stats on HerHoopStats these numbers jumped out at me:

Kentucky's defensive points per possession is 92.3. Rutgers and Northwestern averaged 85.2 and 85.8 respectively. Kentucky averaged a steal rate of 10.6%, whereas Rutgers and Northwestern averaged 15.8 and 14.1% respectively. Finally, Kentucky's rebound rate was 49.5%, whereas Iowa's for the season is 50.4%.

The stats lead me to believe that Kentucky won't be as good defensively as Rutgers and Northwestern were this year. As long as our shots are falling at a decent rate, we should be able to score against them. And it doesn't look like rebounding will be a major issue like it has been occasionally this season.

It looks like Kentucky has some decent shooters, but none that shoot at the 40% rate that most of our starters do. Howard is clearly their best player, and will be a matchup problem. I was surprised how perimeter-oriented she is after watching a few YouTube clips given that she's nearly as tall as Czinano. That's going to be a matchup issue for whoever we have try to guard her.

I think triangle and two could be an option on defense. Put Kate on Howard and have her not play any help defense. Have her try to take away the three-point line, then rely on the triangle to help if Howard drives past her. Put the second man defender on their second best shooter. Make the players not known for scoring beat us. Alternatively, we could go player to player and use the strategy Oregon used against the Iowa men today: let Howard get hers but try to take the rest of the team away. Assume that our offense is probably good enough to outscore them as long as they don't go crazy from three.

Overall, I'm also encouraged--this seems like a winnable game. We have a much better shot at the Sweet 16 than we did a couple weeks ago.

Marshall can't have a repeat performance of Sunday. Good Lord that was ugly, got to be the worst game of her career so far. And they need to stop with those lazy passes, then this team should win.

If we come out with strong defense, intensity, and laser focus then I think we have a good chance of winning. Our defense has been bad all year long so we really gotta show a good defensive performance. Also, Kentucky is sounding like they are wanting to come out strong and make the first punch so we got to be ready to go from the start.

woke up early and saw the Kentucky game is on so i decided to tune it. Am I missing something with the way Tamika Catchings talks?

BTW HTF does someone leading the country in PPG, Assist and 3pt not be one of the best 15 players in the country?
