New Story Hawkeyes land their QB in Oklahoma native Carson May

This kid is no project. Covid is the only thing that hurt his recruitment. Heck of an athlete and makes every throw. The fact that the coaches found him in Oklahoma and he earned a scholarship after camp evaluations, tells me, the coaches know he's a competitor, the QB room will be highly competitive.
You have not been following Iowa football if you believe there is really ever a QB competition.

There is ALWAYS a QB competition AFTER a veteran starting QB graduates. It's also always done in quite a fair way at Iowa too. Fans obviously have opinions ... but those opinions are largely uninformed and/or under-informed ... so they're not worth crap.

Once Petras graduates ... it should be interesting to see how the QB competition plays out.

Hogan is spaced well in terms of eligibility and fits the Stanley/Petras "mold" ... however, Labas brings more of a Ricky Stanzi mobility to the mix. May makes things even more intriguing ... because it's like he's a mix of BOTH.

Hell ... given the covid year ... and given the fact that the Iowa coaches really like Alex Padilla ... Padilla is just a "covid- redshirt freshman" this year. It's not unthinkable for him to stick around and take advantage of all the extra time in the program.

Things could get really interesting indeed!

just ask ruddock

Like the programs that have frequent coaching changes, programs that have frequent QB controversies usually suck. KF has had two in season competitions in his entire time at Iowa and won of those (Ricky Stanzi v Jake C) last all of a game and half, notwithstanding Jake C had actually played better but clearly was a much more limited player. The Jake R v. CJ drifted along all year. Another brave call for the staff because CJ had in no way played better than Jake R but the staff recognized CJ having a stronger arm and some superior assets.

Pretty happy we stuck with Spencer right about now.

Seriously, don't sleep on Joey Labas. He's mobile and a good thrower.

Have to trust KF
The backup QB is usually the most popular fan favorite on the team

Its because we see the recruitment, get excited. Then never see the kid, could be they suck, they could transfer..., may not be the best in practice so never get the chance.
Its a mystery with a lot of QBs that roll through Iowa. Lately all the recruits look promising, its a shame we can't play them all.

Someone on the OSU board said: "Wisconsin really looked great when they had the dual threat QB in Russell Wilson. Then they never recruited another guy like him." I pointed out Brad Banks was pretty special too, but was unfortunately the stylistic exception, not the rule, at Iowa. Tate was pretty similar in some ways, but really the archetype at Iowa is Nate Stanley.

I like our QBs in general, but it seems we could go up a notch if we diversified the offense more.

I mean, we wouldn't have beaten Purdue in 2002 without Banks' 45 yard draw. That is a huge weapon to have at our disposal. Watching Petras scramble is really painful.

Don't write off Joey Labas. He has a good running instinct and HS video shows he sees running lanes open and knows when to take off.

I'm for starting Labas right now. Other schools can simplify their game plans to put their best athletes on the field. The kid has been studying the Iowa offense for two years with Ricky Stanzi as a personal coach.

Let's make history. Someone pulls the surprisingly good freshman off the bench somewhere every season.

It's not a simple either/or question.

Is there a quarterback competition every year? Yes

But...is it carefully managed? Yes

Might the way that's done emphasize minimizing mistakes and ball control more than playmaking? Yes

Great managers and CEOs recruit the best talent they can, then they allow that talent to flourish.

I assume KF/BF thought they could protect Petras this season and this year's OL disaster is highlighting Petras shortcomings. If KF/BF have any brains, they wil pick someone else to be the Annointed One next spring and any change is going to be an upgrade in QB mobility. Petras will transfer out,

Or they can keep Petras, next year OL not going to be much better, and the complaints on BF are going to get a lot worse. Offenses finishing in the lower 10 percentile is not a good resume builder for BF. He won't get the IOwa job after KF gone and BF won't even get another offensive coordinator job with these type of puke offenses.

KF definitely doesn't like in season QB controversy but even he will cut bait on a guy that can't get the job done. Petras is not very good QB and he won't be transferring to a P5 school.

Agree. The line might be better but still we'd need like the 1985 or 2001 lines to keep Spencer protected. This OL coach won't be around for season 3 if next season is anything like this season's line.

I do not think Alex is the answer. Having seen only the video available, and Joey's is all HS video, the jump will be to one of those two. I think Labas is the better answer.

Kirk Ferentz knows the game. A coach's value is gone when the donors become dissatisfied. The big $ guys are not dissatisfied but everyone has been slapped in the face the last two weeks. Pretty hard to imagine the coaches are unaware.
