the big ten is likely to have 7-8 bowl eligible teams (I’ve listed their projected final reg season record):
Wisconsin 12-0
OSU 10-2
PSU 10-2
Northwestern 9-3
MSU 9-3
Michigan 8-4
Iowa 7-5 or 8-4 (don’t want to jinx us by saying 8-4)
maybe Indiana 5-7 or 6-6
I think Wisconsin, OSU, and PSU (all currently in Top 10) have a decent chance of making a NY6 game, and at least two of them should make it. I think whether we’re 7-5 or 8-4 we’re the 7th slot in the hierarchy. Where we go will largely depend on whether the conference gets 2 or 3 in the CFP/NY6, and possibly to some degree how serious the league is about not sending IU back to a bowl they’ve recently been to.
It seems likely to me that the SEC runner up or ND will be ranked higher than Big Ten runner up, so Orange Bowl is doubtful for Big Ten
Citrus: Wisconsin/OSU/PSU if not in NY6, or Northwestern/Michigan State (UM played there in 2015)
Outback: MSU or Michigan (NU played there in 2015)
Holiday: NU, MSU, or Michigan
Music City/Taxslayer: NU/MSU/Mich if only 2 in NY6
Or Music City: Iowa if 3 in NY6
Pinstripe: Iowa if 2 in NY6, IU if eligible and 3 in NY6
Foster Farms: IU is eligible and 2 in NY6
However, IU has recently played in both Pinstripe and Foster Farms, so its possible if only 2 make NY6 IU could move up to Music City/Taxslayer and Mich or MSU could drop to Pinstripe thus dropping Iowa to Foster Farms. Or if 3 make NY6, IU might still jump to Music City/Taxslayer and Iowa to Pinstripe.
Some have said (due to fan following, I think) that Iowa will never go to Quick Lane Bowl. However, with these contracts saying that each Bowl will get at least 5 different teams in 6 years, if the Big Ten has enough eligible teams in the future the simple math might force them to send the Hawks there sometime. Rutgers, Minnesota, and Maryland have already used one of their spots in Detroit. The Big Ten likely won’t fill that Bowl this year, but that would mean the next two years would pick from the following realistic pool should we have enough eligible teams: Illinois, Purdue, Nebraska, Northwestern, Indiana, MSU, and Iowa. On second thought I guess we should be able to stay above at least two of those in the pecking order, so never mind. Current contracts run through 2019, so for 2017, 2018, 2019 we still have yet to use a spot in the Citrus, Holiday, Music City, Pinstripe, of Foster Farms. So barring 6-6 seasons we should be safe from Detroit through 2019.
