HBO Max said the film with racist depictions will return as created but "with a discussion of its historical context and a denouncement of those very depictions."

When TCM shows Holiday Inn they warn viewers that the black face musical number may offend some people. Seems fair and far better than the censorship I fear from the politically correct movement.

The Nazis burned books and got rid of any material they didn't approve of. Sounds familiar.

HBO streaming isn't permanently removing the movie. They are removing it to add editorial comment discussing how the movie romanticizes the confederacy and "happy house slaves." Similar to a theater history class discussion because the film is pretty far from accurately portraying the time.....except the field hospital scene.

This is step one. There are all sorts of historical films, pictures, cartoons, etc. that are no longer available for viewing because they've been removed from circulation.

Totally different issue, but "Blazing Saddles" couldn't be made today.

The n-word is OK if Samuel L. Jackson says it, but not used in a humorous way.

In an ironic twist the actress portraying the slave in the picture was the first African American woman to win an academy award

I was hoping this thread would have had more on Vivien Leigh's sexual abilities. I believe it was the actor Peter Finch who said that once you bedded Vivien, nothing else mattered. During filming of A Streetcar Named Desire", Marlon Brando said he wanted to "f her so bad his teeth hurt."

Anyway..
