He who shall not be named

Doesn't school start pretty soon? When is he planning on picking a school? Also, did we ever get a final word on the guy from Sanford? Where did he end up?

This is already a done deal.

Man. I hope you're wrong. And I can't lie when I say that I will have a problem rooting for the Hawks if Downey is on the team. That includes a miracle run at NCAAs. We ALL gave Cael/PSU sh*t for the Andrew Long title team. I'd feel worse about this. At the time, at least Andrew was TRYING to be a better person.

This guy? Isn't even trying.

Just curious, how do you know he isn't trying? I have heard he is making an effort to turn things around.

I'm not trying to say this is a good idea, just that it is unfair to say he hasn't been making an effort.

It's not unfair to say he's not trying. This will be his SEVENTH stop. Maryland, Florida, OTC, Nebraska, IACC (heard he left there in good standing), Iowa State. With one exception he has left a burning bridge at a place that has welcomed him. And if you don't think his social media page is an outlet into his current pysche, well, then, I have this lake to sell you.

The point is, he doesn't deserve this chance at Iowa. Especially when you consider the repeated and multiple statements both Tom and Terry have made publicly about our culture. Even given a short lease, it's not worth the risk. It's just not. And with his most recent departure, I think he is a disgusting human being. He's not someone I want associated with Iowa wrestling, because if this goes south, it will make the program look like idiots. And he isn't worth that.

What if it doesn't go south, he lives a relatively clean life and shuts up, and wins a title... Then what does the board say?

If my aunt had a d*ck she'd be my uncle.

The point is, it's not worth the risk. He has a past, so him even coming is tainted. His past matters. His recent past matters. Who he is, matters. He deserves to live that life any way he wants. I just don't think his values line up with what TNT say they want in their athletes.

Even if he does stay relatively clean for 2 semesters. He's still the guy who did all the things he's done in the past, and he will still be a "Hawk" when he messes up in the future. I'm all for second chances, even thirds. Sevenths?

What has this young man done in his past I dont know his history? Where is he training now and who that can be fully trusted can make a clear decision if he is actually trying to straighten his life out? I watched him wrestle Dean he is a very solid freestyle wrestler how does he compare in folk?

25 Wagner/Stickley

Do I have the right or does 84 & 97 switch?

Long was not trying to be a better person at that point, he was running away from help ISU was trying to give him. Long has a substance abuse problem. I don't know I want Downey in the mix and he has had more than his share of being a bone head but I have not gotten the feeling he has an addiction issue like Long.

Wilke needs to be 184 anyway because Warner will be 197. Downey probably does better at 197, Nickal and Martin are a stronger 2 deep than Moore and Weigel IMO.

Just read an article about what has happened in his past besides him running with some bad peps and getting arrested in HS for assault and going on twitter rants with DC about mma fighting what has he done thats so bad. Im sure I dont know the whole story and the details but it sounds like he is focused on atleast trying to continue and finish his wrestling career even wants to compete for 2020 spot. I think if TnT have enough trust in him to give him a shot why would we as fans not give him support

i sincerely like downey. the kid has a good heart. would love to see TnT have an influence on him.

I feel like most people in this world have a good heart and really don't wish to inflict harm on others, besides the very small number of people who are sociopaths.

I'm sure there are people in Pete Rose's life who think he's a good guy and just wish he could get his act together. Just read an article on Lenny Dykstra who was being helped out by an extremely kind physician who has known him for years and obviously sees some redeeming qualities in him.

He's not a kid, he's 25 years old. He's had problems going on 10 years now, of which none are his fault according to him and his dad.

I haven't met him in person like you have so I can't comment on his demeanor. He may be very likeable.

I can comment on his many public actions over the years which include arrests for beating up drug dealers, throwing coaching staffs under the bus, posting revenge porn on the internet and overall public persona of hey, look at me, and if you don't like me I can beat your ass.

He's a good wrestler, we get it.

With Lugo and Downey coming, the HWC should go long on Tattoo futures - the club would make a killing.

In all seriousness, there would be some great matches at either 184 or 197.

Not a fan of this. If he publicly screws something up big time, it could mean the staff's job...especially during these times. It's just not worth it.

For them to do this, it must mean that Spencer is being talked about to wrestle as well. Why else take the risk unless you are trying to win it?

I'll try to sum it up Grip, there's a lot though.
In 02/17 PD3 was dismissed by ISU for a "violation of team rules". He quickly took to social media and campaigned for himself to be allowed to compete in the B12 despite not being part of a B12 program. He described ISU as "thieves that stole my dream." "Been dealing with people trying to ruin my goals and kill my dreams my entire life, this ain't nothing new...clowns. Of ISU he said, "They're goal obviously isn't to win, if it was they wouldn't be 1-12. LOL I was ready to do it for the dummy's too, they don't really care about wrestling.

In 2014 with Nebreaska he went out (during the season) drinking, got into a fight and broke his thumb. He couldn't wrestle, so he stopped coming to practice, going to class etc, so Mark Manning dismissed him from the team.

Downey’s decision came down to two schools: Iowa and Iowa State. Like his reason to originally wrestle for Nebraska, Downey ultimately choose Iowa State due to training partners.

“I have Kyven Gadson and Matt Gibson,” Downey said. “It also comes down to coaches. The Paulsons, both guys are around my size. They are both alternate world team members, national champs, they have their accolades. They are youthful. They can still wrestle with me and beat up on me. But KJ (Kevin Jackson) has the accolades you want. He is a world champ, an Olympic champ. I love learning from him and I got a good vibe and good energy when I met him for the first time at the U.S. Open. Everybody here on staff knows the sport and everybody who I train with loves the sport.”

In 2010 he was arrested for assault in Baltimore for a fight at a night club. He was also charged in a second unrelated assault. Additionally, he was charged with robbery for allegedly attempting to purchase marijuana from a 16-year-old and then refusing to pay then beating and robbing the juvenile. These incidents occurred when he was 17-18 years of age. He was convicted of one the assaults and spent some time in jail, losing a scholarship offer from Maryland.

Downey, a junior from Baltimore, Md., earned All-American honors last season (2016) with the Cyclones at 197 pounds, taking fifth at the NCAA Championships. He wrestled at 184 this season, going 7-0 despite injuries that have sidelined him. His last appearance on the mat was on Jan. 20 against Northern Iowa, winning 9-5.

Prior to arriving in Ames, Downey wrestled at Iowa Central, where he went undefeated (43-0) and was a junior-college national champion at 197 in 2015. Out of high school, he attended Nebraska but left the program after a series of injuries during his redshirt year.

I don't know PD3, but he is a wrestling talent, who seems to have a self-destructive personality. I can't imagine the level-headed, mature, championship caliber kids in our room have any interest in putting up with this grown-ass man's shenanigans.

Additionally, and quite frankly, the program and our fans are better than this.

My 2 cents.

I would prefer that he go elsewhere, and if he gets it all together, and is serious about his business (of wrestling) during his Sr year, then give him a shot at the HWC after college, but then again, I have no say in the matter.

I disagree with you here. Not trying to be a kiss-ass on the HR, but I honestly don't feel that winning a NC would have anything to do with it, if ultimately the Brands decided to take this on.

They are confident guys and I'm sure they think they can make a difference with him. I'm sure they could give a rats ass what people outside their program think - as they have earned - and the official visit likely shows that they have trust in their staff. If they decided to take him in, it will probably because he has convinced them to take a chance on trusting him during the visit.

Occasionally, that works out in a feel good story...

Could be opting for a OLY RS for Lee in 2020 instead? Perhaps Teske goes 125 that first year, then goes 133 the next year when Lee is back and hes a bit bigger.

125: Lee - Champ
133: Laux/Stickley/Glynn - (1-2 / 2-2)
141: Turk - R12
149: Sorensen - Finalist
157: Kemerer - Finalist
165: Marinelli - Top 5
174: Young - R12-6th
184: Wilcke - R12-6th
197: Downey - Finalist
285: Stoll - Top 5

Obviously not a fan of Downeys antics, but that's a pretty solid lineup.

I agree with you here chief. Downey at 97, Lugo at 41 and Lee at 25. That would be a damn good team, but still don't think it really challenges PSU.

There is also another risk here, and that is he ruins the atmosphere of the team. He was a big negative on the atmosphere at ISU. Plus, when you have guys like Kemmerer who came here solely because of the "good guys" on the team and the wholesome nature, this just doesn't jive.

I don't think Spencer wants Downey dating his sister.

I just don't see Spencer Lee winning it as a true freshman. No doubt the kid is a stud but he is still pretty small. He also hasn't had the mat time since his injury. I really would like to see is redahirt him. However If Teske comes on board it may be worth wrestling one of them at 125 as a true freshman. They are both really small and probably lifetime 125?

Even if Downey does wrestle for Iowa and makes the finals I just don't think we have the firepower to win the team title. Now if Surriano transfers out of PSU that may change?

Just a few thoughts.

And neither is Downey. He has a drinking/substance abuse problem that he thinks is NOT a problem. That's Long all the way.
