No. It's not petty. It's not childish. Also, I am not strong-arming the coaches. That is literally impossible. I'm not sure if you've met TNT, but our opinions have no bearing on their decision making. I'm making a point. I'm making a point based on the words of both Tom and Terry Brands - the heads, the stewards of our program. Based on their public intimations to the fact that they are looking for a certain type of wrestler. Based on their public intimations that those certain type of wrestlers are what will lead us to a championship. Based on the public intimations by top end recruits that we almost lost them because previous teammates lived a lifestyle too similar to PD3. I'm holding them accountable to their words.
I agree...it sends mixed signals. Tom has talked about the type of guys we want in our room and this guy is not it. What are parents of recruits supposed to think?
For those that have brought up past or even current Hawks and their behavior, let me say this: I have no clue what goes on in the personal lives of 40+ guys associated with Iowa wrestling beyond a few twitter posts. They could be choirboys, they could be partiers...who knows. But I do know what goes on in the life of PD3 because he puts it out there for everybody to see, I know how his Dad acts, and they are both very proud of it. How do you change or even contain that mentality? The answer is, even for some of the best leaders....you don't.
I don't think anybody is questioning his wrestling ability...he could win a title if he buckles down and trains hard because he's not as good as he thinks he is. His wrestling is undisciplined, sometimes bad positioning but for all that, he has an innate feel of the mat and his opponent. I have known guys like Pat...been good buddies with a few so I don't doubt Willie's heart comment. His type would be very loyal to his friends but loyal to himself first overall and he cannot understand how his actions affect others nor would he take responsibility of any of it. So if I were to do this, this would be my plan:
1.No Social Media
2. Submit to random drug tests
3. Meet with a substance abuse counselor at least once a month
4. Any alcohol/drug use or incidents, then he's off the team
5. Assign a coach/mentor as a "sponsor." This guy would meet with Pat weekly and be Pat's first call to avoid stupidity.
6.Have Pat volunteer so many hours a week at the Veteran's hospital or the children's hospital. Pat needs to serve something larger than himself.
