Help wanted

Sorry to post “off-topic” but I am looking for help from an Iowan and thought this would be a great place to ask.

I am looking for a place to park my pickup and trailer around Des Moine (or as far east as Iowa City) in June while I ride my motorcycle to CA and up the coast to WA. (This may seem early but I am in the final planning stages)

If anyone has or knows of a safe place I could leave it, it would be greatly appreciated.

I understand if this post needs to be moved. Thanks in advance.

There's a Flying J truck stop on I-80 in Urbandale at the Hickman Road exit. Should be able to leave it there.

How long is the trip?

I'd park the rig in West Des Moines. 9th St. between Ashworth and Grand would be a fine place to park on the street. We lived right there for the last 25 years and never locked the doors of the house or cars. My father in law has a CPA firm w/ small parking on the block as well. Might be possible to at least put the trailer in the lot.

Flying J would prolly work, but there are a lot of folks just passing through……

We owned a coffee roastery until recently at 5th and Elm in West Des Moines with large parking lot in rear. Your rig would be fine there, but it might not hurt to let the local police know what you are doing. (Or talk to Nate, the current owner of the roastery.)

I'd avoid the Flying J. If it were me, I would find a Hy-Vee/Wal-Mart/Target at least a few miles from 80 and park it there.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm not real comfortable with a truck stop as too many people passing through and wouldn't want leave it on the street for 12 or 13 days. Will keep looking.

I ride a Harley and I've done it two ways:
1) At the hotel I'm staying at. I've gone to the hotel manager and told him I was going to be gone for a few days and would it be ok if I left vehicle. They've always said yes.
2) Go to closest Harley dealer and do the same thing.

You can park it on my farm, just lock it up and make sure it's out of the way. However, I'm a couple hours south (Centerville area) of your desired location.

I suggest you look into el dub's suggestions above. He's a good dude and wouldn't steer you wrong.

I'm tempted to offer our cul-de-sac or our driveway, but the Mrs. wouldn't be real keen on that.

If you park a trailer at any of these places for two weeks, you are guaranteed to be towed.

WOW! Thanks to everyone for the feedback and offers. I promise not to try to steal any of your wrestlers while I am passing through. I do plan to stop and get my picture with Gable (OK, with the Gable statue) and check out CHA.

I really like DMLAWDAD's idea and will contact heartland storage. If that does not work out I will get back to one of you for your kind offers.

Again; Thanks for the offers and ideas. I knew wrestling fans would be the way to get help.

Good luck to your wrestlers the rest of the season. Hope both our teams are 100% healthy come nationals.

Matt: This is the best offer you are going to get, imo. The suburb of West Des Moines is as safe as it gets. The poster in question will watch your rig. I'd have offered the same but we recently moved to Oregon.
