The German anti-Hitler minister and philosopher Deitrich Boenhoeffer had a lot of time in nazi to think while in prison before his execution just before the end of WW2. He wrote letters etc about Stupidity and how German peoples were able to be swayed to follow such a sick bunch of bastards. He talked of herd mentality.
And a psychologist named Asch in 1951 ran Conformity experiments that had interesting conclusions. The experimenters planted people in the test group who would always go with the wrong answer like which line is shortest on a drawing., etc. They found that when even given absolutely false choices people would conform to the majority of the group and pick the incorrect answer. Their conclusions were that majorities of people do not like conflict, will change their mind to conform as in herd mentality, and also to not be bullied.
The Nazis were great bullies by using verbal and physical attacks. Reminds me of Trump et al.
