Pretty sweet column from HawkCentral.com.

Some excerpts:

The tears were flowing in the locker room afterward....

The head coach was crying...So was offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz, the coach’s son. And then, a lot of other sweaty guys wearing eye black and shoulder pads couldn't help but cry, too.

“Quarterbacks, running backs, tight ends — the whole nine yards. Everybody was crying,” Levi Paulsen said. “I think everybody realizes that the University of Iowa is a special place. The culture that Coach Ferentz has (built) and sustained over time is just second to none.”

After the game, against Ferentz’s wishes, he was honored in the locker room by UI President Bruce Harreld and athletics director Gary Barta.

“I got ambushed a little bit in there,” Ferentz said. “President Harreld had asked the other day to recognize it and I said, ‘Please don't.' And he didn't. So Gary circled around and took that over. I forgot to tell him the same thing.”

“He’s the main reason why I’m here,” said fifth-year senior Matt Nelson. “He’s such a great guy. He’s a man you really want to be when you grow up.”

Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson got choked up talking about “KF” getting choked up.

“KF has things he gets emotional about,” Hockenson said. “And that makes us emotional about him, and that we respect the opportunity we have.”

Players knew the significance of this day, and they felt honored to be a part of it.

“He’s another father figure out there for all of us,” Stanley said. “These are special years of our lives. And to be able to spend it with someone with so much legacy, so much character and so much love for all of us as players … it’s awesome to be able to go out there to compete with him and for him.”

I was thinking the same thing...looks like the camera lense was probably super close to his arm maybe???

I always shake my head when I see the Ferentz haters. Listen, does the staff make questionable calls etc from time to time? Sure, but overall they do a good job. College football, even the mid and low level teams in today's world do well and generally it is competitive.

Ferentz generally does well recruiting, he knows the kind of player he wants, the roll up the sleeves hard worker who will buy into his system. Nobody can argue his player development skills, and contrary to popular message board opinion, no, we aren't getting tons of 5 star athletes to come here, regardless of who the coach is.

Ferentz runs a clean program, cares about the community, and isn't a douche. My only critique is sometimes consistency isn't there, but again, a lot plays into that.

In other words, Iowa has been very very lucky to have the stability of two respectable coaches over 40yrs.

For the most part, the true Kirk haters really aren't realistic as to what Iowa is capable of on a yearly basis. Unlike tOSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State and the majority of other BiG schools, Iowa doesn't have the big city population to draw from. To be honest, it is impressive that we have done so well for as long as we have with the recruiting limitations we have. Even Wisconsin has a bigger advantage of recruiting in there state, yet we seem to recruit head to head with them. They have a better tradition of RB's then Iowa in the past twenty years or so which I think draws better RB recruits to them. Hell, if we had RB success like them, it would be like having a new Shonn Green every 4 years to plug into the system. So, I am disappointed like all Iowa fans when we lose, but am proud of the Coach we have.

No he isn't.

Yes, he is. 3 time B1G coach of the year, 2 time B1G Conference Champion, 5th all time in B1G wins behind Yost, Hayes, Schembechler, and Paterno. Just passed Fry, a Hall of Famer.

Quit being an asshat Cyclone fan by taking off your McDonalds kids meal cardinal and gold sunglasses just for one second to stop hating on all things Iowa.

He can’t stop being what he is. Jealously won’t allow it. And stupidity follows closely behind.

2 things:
1) I'm a Hawkeye fan.
2) Kirk's winning % is currently below .600, which is the threshold to be considered for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach. Unless he increases that # to above the line, none of those other accomplishments will matter much.

I'll take that bet, and by the way, he's a 4 time BIG coach of the year, the only one I believe.

Schembechler won it 6 times.
I'll need to see something on that. I've heard it report numerous times that KF was the first BIG coach to win it more then three times. If your right, so be it, but thats not what I've seen.....

Did a quick search, and by quick I mean I glanced over the 1st result in like 10sec, not sure if BTCOY was awarded prior to '72 but that's how far back the list goes. It has Schembecler listed as 4 wins.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/awards/big-ten-coy.html

That is the media's selection,
From 1982-1991 there was also a Coach of the Year voted on by the coaches, and Bo S. was awarded it twice by the coaches during that time while the media awarded it to someone else.

No he isn't.

Only behind Hayes, Bo, and Stagg in B10 victories. Coach 5 more years and he'll be in the top 25 in total wins. 5 top 10 finishes at Iowa is pretty impressive. Fry made it in with only 1.

Fry was inducted just 5 years after retirement. I believe he only sits at 55% win percentage.

Correct. And since then they have instituted a required winning % of .600 and based on the emails I have exchanged with the NFF there are not going to be exceptions made to this rule.
