... 6 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, incredible defensive presence & stopper down low and few recognize it?

I just don't get it.

Sure you can talk about Uthoff or Jok or Gesell nearly every game because of their awesome capabilities but I, for one, recognize that there is an incredible piece to the puzzle that doesn't get his due.

A true testament to knowing your role and continuing to improve the things you can and not force the things you can't. What a baller and what a luxury- an opponent's offensive post presence is essentially negated whenever he's in.

Also, his coast-to-coast jam today was an absolute treat.

The people who rag on Woodbury have a very superficial understanding of the game.

You can usually tell the difference between people who played competitively and the ones who did not based on their opinion of Woodbury.

Sorry, but your full of it. I'm one of those that's tough on Woody. He had a pretty good game and did make mistakes, maybe those that notice the mistakes are the posters that have actually played competitively. He's not the only one that made mistakes, there were many today. Great win by the way. Good teams overcome their miscues and Iowa did that today.

Sorry but you're the one full of it. Of course, Woody made mistakes today. You don't play the game, especially at that level, without making mistakes. Did you happen to notice when MI was carving up the IA defense with back door cuts inside that Fran immediately went back to Woody?

Maybe Woody has not lived up to his top 50 ranking, especially on the offensive end, but he is an asset. Why not just leave it at that?

Woodie played a good game, he is competent, and has really improved his FT shooting. The play of Uhl, Uthoff, Jok, Baer allow him to be who he is...steady, good defender, but not a player who can score at will. He made a couple of those bunnies today that he misses from time to time...that was nice to see.

Strike a nerve? My point was that you, and others, always state that those that criticize never played and don't know the game. I don't agree and stated the same.

I never said you didn't play, or don't know, the game. I have no way of knowing, nor do I care, what your experience or knowledge of the game is. I simply think that Woody is much maligned and will be sorely missed next year. That's all; no more, no less.

Peace Out

My apologies skydog, I got ahead of myself and was directing my frustration at rocknrollface's post.

Nope , I'm right.

And Lol, I never said he doesn't make mistakes. That's just stupid to even imply.

Anyone who understands basketball understand how important Woodbury is defensively.

I'll say it.

If you don't grasp what's going on on defense then you do not know the game. Period.

Woody looked better today because Michigan had no post game. In the first half, woody was a big liability on defense as he was quick enough to protect the rim on the back cuts. When 34 was in game for Michigan ,Woody was more effective. Woody has his strengths and his weaknesses, this is matchup driven.

The OP's point is valid: Give Adam Woodbury credit. He's a key part of an outstanding team, and he has improved in almost every area. Lately, he has been grabbing some key rebounds with physical play, and foul trouble? Not any more, but he's still playing great defense. So rather than focus on what he doesn't do so well, I agree that the right thing to do is to give him credit for what he is doing well. Without Adam's contributions, Iowa would not be in position to win its first Big Ten title since 1979.

Yes he did let a couple guys get behind him in the zone but part of that was their guards managed to get inside the zone and made some excellent passes.

When he was out UM got allot more stuff at the rim than when he was in.

Woody does all the dirty work and that's the stuff that goes unnoticed. He plays great defensive position basketball...is a great screener, and he fights you for rebounds. What's not to like. People who don't appreciate him, don't have a real handle on the strategy of the game. He plays a vital role night in and night out. He also doesn't get alot of credit for wearing down the opposing big men...he runs down the floor every possession...and he can run. There's alot of positives with his game...some people just get frustrated because he doesn't play above the rim. His job is to make sure others can't either.

Oh god the "real fans" are back. No one can possible understand what they understand or love the hawks like they do....o_O

I like that Woodbury isn't trying to go one-on-one very much anymore, and will settle for that 10 or 12 footer which he is decent at.

Less is more with him. Do what you do, and let the stars make the flashy plays.

Nope, it is apparent you only appreciate what the media tells you to appreciate. Most that played competively know that having a 7' screen setting, smart, hard nosed, great passing, SOB is a huge luxury! Kind of like Bill Laimbeer type, i guarantee his teammates love be him and could care less what dipshits on a message board thinks

I think Woody was in there for plenty of those, perhaps I need to re-watch it......................

He had a fine game today. Kid loves playing and being a Hawk, and the fans love to see him do well. He made most of his shots today, that was great to see.

When a guy is 7-1, and a 4-star recruit, and starts from game one, and plays for four years...lots of people expect a lot. It isn't that difficult to predict such excitement and disappointment. He hasn't developed into that "go to" big guy, but he does what he does. Not everyone can be a playmaker...and he isn't. The lack of development of post moves, after four years of coaching and playing, well, is kind of amazing to me. (Yes I played 3 years of BB after high school...wrestling in HS) That said, he has made improvements in these areas...keeping the ball above his head a bit more and not getting stripped as much, free throw shooting *****, avoiding foolish fouls, a nice mid range jumper that is functional if not dazzling. He does lots of good things, and had a great game vs Mich. This is a good thing. I put him in the camp with MG, and Sapp...love to see them do well so far this year after the hard word...they are exorcising a lot of demons in their playing history...and are making some history!

Does that mean that they have exorcised you, as you have been demonizing them for at least two years.

I think Izzo nailed it in his post game presser. He said Iowa plays tough like their coach. In the past they didn't do this, but this year they out toughed us. The leader of our team as far as toughness is
Woody. End of Story.

In the past, I have been disappointed in their performances, given their star ratings coming in, and the fact they have started every game since they arrived on campus. Both are playing well now, in their roles, along with better production from the players around them.

I don't think this has anything to do with my demons...what they are now and what they were can be compared with statistics.

I prefer their play, now...very good, understanding limitations, great effort, team players. I am very pleased to see Sapp, MG and Woodie have very good senior years, leading this team.

There you have it...

The thing with him and post moves is he's just not built for it.

High center of gravity, very narrow shoulders and short arms for his height, and can't jump a foot.

You just can't fault him for those things, he can't do anything about it.

The people that rated him that high out of high school were off.

Woodbury gets the most he can out of his body, he's extremely smart , tough and willing to do all the thankless stuff.

The fact that he's so effective at defense despite his shortcomings is impressive to me.

Woody is solid. He's not great or a guy you want to have the ball if you need a big bucket, but he's solid. I think people rag on him because he'll make a great move to the bucket and then miss a bunny or get a shot blocked that he should have dunked. He brings a lot of little things to the table that don't show up in the box score. Plays solid defense, has become more physical, solid on boards, isn't a stiff on offense, sets good screens, etc. I'm glad he's a Hawk. Part of it may just be high expectations. He came to Iowa as the highest rated player Fran has brought in and people expected him to play at the level. Something akin to the Ky big men. Woody isn't an all-American or even all-B1G, but he's a solid player, an important piece to this team.

Concur...Rock and Phantom...well said...Woodie is a good role player, who really helps the team in ways that aren't always seen or appreciated.
