Fred was crazy to leave.
I doubt him or Gorman? Survive after this year
Why? Easier to transfer into?ISU will take him back.
That said, Illinois is better recruiting base.
Agree ... I can see his next gig in the front office ...The Bulls biggest problem is in the front office, not who coaches them.
Fred didn't like the rigors of recruiting high school athletes and failed at that except for his ability to use the transfer option to fill holes in his roster. He is a great X's and O's guy, but being a college coach is so much more. I don't expect him back at Iowa State in any capacity.
If his current gig as NBA coach doesn't work out, I expect him to land a front office position, maybe back with the Timberwolves.
The University of Illinois is becoming a graveyard for
unwanted coaches in Chicago.
First, their football team took Lovie Smith and
now their basketball team will look at Fred Hoiberg.
Bottom Line: IF you are loser with the Bears and Bulls
then get another losing job in Champaign, Illinois..
Agree ... I can see his next gig in the front office ...
Fred is not the problem in Chicago, the problem is the front office. Instead of maybe finding some good young talent you go and sign Dwayne wade, great use of that money.
He never recruited; he hiredI kinda doubt he has interest in coming back to college. He hates recruiting and his coaching career has a shorter window due to his health
Fred's part of the problem, he's not a good coach and his players have no respect at all for him. Which isn't surprising either, compare his resume to that of other college coaches who have made the leap to the NBA, Calipari (both times), Pitino, Stevens, Krueger, all of those guys had at minimum Final Four appearances, the recent college to NBA hires with a resume similar to Fred's are Leonard Hamilton, Tim Floyd and Reggie Theus none of whom lasted long.
After being part of that terrific Minnesota brain trust that yielded all those 20 something win seasons and drafted multiple pg's ahead of Stephen Curry and his terrific stealth tanking job of turning the Bulls from a playoff regular to a lottery team, I'm sure it will be a bidding war for his services.
Bulls are still in a playoff position in the East with a roster that is not at all conducive to what Hoiberg wants to do. I mean Rondo, Wade, Butler, Carter-Williams, etc. are not guys that are going to space the floor and/or move the ball. One of those guys would be fine, but when you are starting three of them you have problems.
It seems like it would be really easy to find a bunch of long, good athletes, who can all space the floor on one end and defend multiple positions on the defensive end. I mean that's a real market inefficiency in the NBA right now that Fred is looking to exploit.
Oh wait, that's how everyone is trying to play. It's not like Fred has some revolutionary new concept, this isn't D'Antoni circa 2005, Fred is basically going "hey see how the Warriors play? Yeah I want to play like that".
OK so what's your point? I wasn't saying that Fred had a revolutionary offensive style, just that he had the opposite type of players needed to execute what he wants to do.
That he's not going to get the kind of team he wants because everyone is after those guys. His "Hoiball" offense only works when he has elite talent, like Royce White, Kane, Niang were in college. He's being exposed as a poor coach in the NBA.
Illinois isn't hiring Fred Hoiberg. There is 1 place in the country that would allow Fred to operate the program how he did(free agency) and that's Iowa State. I don't have a problem with it, it was legal and he made the NCAA look like the dicks they are and exploited the rule. His goal at ISU was to win as many games ASAP, build his coaching reputation ASAP and GTFO ASAP and get to the NBA. He accomplished all 3. He had zero intentions of staying at Iowa State when he took that job.
Hoiberg has no say in personnel so his comments are what I would expect from the head coach. "Hey it is great that we were able to get a veteran PG that was able to win an NBA Championship while playing with Boston." Do you think he should have trashed Rondo publicly and pointed out his short-comings and his attitude problem? I would bet that was discussed with management in private.I don't know how much say Hoiberg has in deciding on personnel, but if he was fine with signing Rajon Rondo, he deserves anything he gets.

I think it's pretty clear he just got the job because he's friends with Gar and the front office wanted a yes man on the bench, instead of a coach who would push back like Thibs did.
Hoiberg is pretty much in straight cut the check mode, and I don't blame him for that. $25M is a nice chunk of change, even better if you don't have to work for it.
