I’m going out on a limb here but the investment required for automated driving, EVs and other advanced technologies is such that they will have much better unit economics by spreading some shared development costs. I’m guessing they looked at what it will take to be cost competitive with Tesla and realized they are screwed without better scale

They could do that as a joint venture, but having done those types of deals myself they always have an incentive issue. Easier to just be one company.

Mitsubishi made pretty decent powertrains. Nissan made some good vehicles, and would provide a better entry point to the truck market.

The biggest value add I can think of would be in the third world.

per my observation when a great company merges or takes over a poorly run big company, usually to expand market or size, the shoddy company slowly brings down the new (bigger) entity. feel bad for honda.
