Honestly, what was up with the fake at the end of the 1st half?

Hock was open, but I believe that Mansell didn't throw it to him because he believed defenders would tackle TJ before he got the first down. I think he was supposed to kick it if TJ wasn't a sure thing but he didn't kick because, by the time the play had developed, he felt pressure and wasn't sure if he could get the kick off. Toren's guy made him move a little and then the guy who TJ released had him on the run. Stanley was open at the bottom of the screen......Would it have been legal to throw a lateral to Stanley after the play started to break down and then have Stanley punt it?

When we lined up I thought it was a bad call.

I like the aggressive nature on 4th down, but when your on the road in the Big Ten you have to be smart.

That was one of the stupidest things KF/BF could have done. Punt the damn ball and go into locker room up 3. Instead, the Ferentz boyz gave PSU 3 free points and a ton of momentum.
Agree, that play made no sense

Actually the 4th and 1 play where after a well executed fake hand-off, Stanley over-threw a wide open Hockenson for a TD (putting Iowa up 21 to 7) would have been a back-breaker for Penn State.
That was 3rd and 1.

Great play call in that spot and from the looks from the TV feed, it was there the entire way. Looked like a fake double pass set up with Hok releasing after a mini-block. Looked like he was wide open...again...but we couldnt get the ball to him. Not 100% sure here because you cant really tell where that PSU safety is at during the play but everyone else is shifting to the Stanley side.

In years pass, we would have punted and been happy with a 3 pt lead. Boring, conservative KF you said.

Too many of you pissed and moaned because of KF's conservative play calling. We have done a number of trick plays with success. KF was trying to swing momentum our way with another trick play and hopefully a TD or a field goal before half. I applaud KF/BF going for the kill. Awesome call again, just a failure to execute.
There is a balance between having balls vs conservative play call, that fake punt was completely stupid.

Penn State WAS NOT in field goal range and had to move the ball over 20 yards and make a 45 yard field goal in short time. Iowa did absolutely nothing for those 4 points. You guys really need stop with the rationalizing and revisionist history, Penn State made several huge mistakes and still won. You should be happy it wasn't the blow out it should of been. Remember PSU was about to go up BY 17 in the 4th quarter when they handed Iowa the ball and then later gave Iowa a pick 6. Iowa was terrible in the second half and did not to deserve to win this game.
Have no fear, he's this big of a nonsensical douchebag on the wrestling board as well.

This thread is laughable because coaches are damned if they do and damned if they don't. If the pass to Brinks fails, it would've been we should've take the "Sure 3 on the road". This play didn't cost us the game as there were so many other opportunities.

As Collinsworth said last night, this is how football is being played now after Minnesota went for it at their own 45.

For years we hear that Ferentz is too stubborn, not with the times, too conservative, fill in the blank, we lose because we aren't aggressive enough. As the OP said earlier, the coaches are calling plays to win the game, not hoping they can outlast them.

FYI. Sun has come up twice since Saturday afternoon...
