Fran McCaffery is in a pretty good position right now when it comes to recruiting.

You might ask why?

The answer is pretty simple, heading into the holiday season, while many other college coaches are still trying to fill their recruiting needs for next season, McCaffery is already done shopping.

Iowa has already signed four prospects for next year, so he won't be scouring the country looking for potential prospects to fill out the Class of 2016. To refresh your memory, Iowa signed three in-state prospects in guard Jordan Bohannon and forwards Cordell Pemsl and Ryan Kriener. They also signed Rivals four star prospect Tyler Cook, a forward from Missouri.

You may ask, well that class might be full, but what is someone leaves? McCaffery has stored up a gift currently on his roster that he could and would add as a scholarship player Nicholas Baer. McCaffery said this past week that Baer would go on scholarship if one would become available, he would like to make it happen sooner rather than later.

Basically, if someone were to seek a transfer after this season, Baer is going to be placed on scholarship.

With that in mind, let's move on to the Class of 2017, where the Hawkeyes already have one commitment in Connor McCaffery, who is the son of the head coach. Now there is a complicating matter that will end up being resolved at a later date and that is the possibility that forward Dale Jones, who had surgery this past week to repair his ACL, would receive an extra year of eligibility. Jones is going to apply for the extra year, but it is unknown at this point if he will receive it.

If he does, then Iowa would be full in 2017, so long as no one from the current roster transfers. But, if Jones doesn't receive the extra year or someone were to leave the program for personal reasons, then Iowa would have a scholarship to give.

What would McCaffery like to see under his Christmas tree?

At this point he is certainly focused on recruiting a player with some size and the top target appears to be 6-foot-10 forward Malik Williams from Ft. Wayne, IN. According to Rivals.com, Williams is a four star prospect with offers from Iowa, Indiana, Purdue, Michigan State, and Xavier. McCaffery recently flew out to see Williams in person at one of his games and that left a pretty strong impression according to a recent story on Peegs.com.

"They really, really want me," Williams said of Iowa. "They keep contacting me and (McCaffery) coming today showed me they're very, very interested."

After Williams, Iowa is also heavily involved with Minnesota forward Theo John. The 6-foot-9 three star recently told Rivals.com that four schools are out front in his recruitment: Iowa, Minnesota, Marquette, and Oklahoma.

He said this about Iowa, "They are having a good season. I haven't seen many of their games, but I like their style of play. Their coaches are really nice guys."

Another name to watch is five star Jeremiah Tilmon, who plays for the same AAU program as Tyler Cook, the St. Louis Eagles. Tilmon recently transferred to play high school basketball at prep school power La Lumiere in Indiana. He has shown some interest in Iowa and was recently offered by North Carolina. He also holds offers from Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, NC State, and Texas.

McCaffery also made another recruiting trip to Indiana to watch a 2017 prospect with ties to Iowa City. The visit was made to watch 6-foot-9 Jack Nunge, who is one of the top rising prospects in the Midwest and scored 35 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in front of McCaffery. Nunge spend a few years in Iowa City during his time elementary and middle school, so he has some pull to the state. He recently picked up an offer from Clemson and there are rumors that Indiana is picking up stronger interest and is close to offering.

Washington, D.C. prep standout Luka Garza is a prospect to watch in the Class of 2017. The three star big man visited Iowa City this fall for an unofficial trip and enjoyed it. George Washington has also offered Garza.

Two other prospects that don't necessarily fit into the needs based on who Iowa is recruiting (and have offered) are Jordan Goodwin, a 6-foot-3 guard from Belleville, IL and Christian Negron, a 6-foot-6 forward from Elgin, IL. Negron made an unofficial visit to Iowa this fall.

While we look into the future of Iowa's shopping list, it should be noted that McCaffery has already secured a verbal commitment from 2018 guard Joe Wieskamp from Muscatine, who is four star prospect. Iowa will also eventually be adding the head coach's second son, Patrick McCaffery, who is a 2019 prospect and expected to be one of the top players in the Midwest.
