How bad is our 2020 class?

Its a new low based on rankings, nothing more nothing less, talent wise no one knows how this class will do. Everyone has opinions but actual performance will come in the future. I have long ignored recruiting rankings, although in general more 4 star and 5 star players you will have more hit than misses, but there are still misses in that group and there are hits with no star players or 2 star players we all understand that. What this comes down to is 2021 recruiting class will be very important for Fran. I agree with most he will need to find a couple dynamic players to maintain the current level.

I actually think this current team will be a low seed tournament team. Fran will need that to sell to the next class.

Last year's team making the 2nd round apparently didn't help this year, so keep dreaming. Fran has taken us as far as he can IMO. If last year's appearance netted us what we've gotten in the '20 class so far, being a low seed in the dance isn't going to move the needle.

"Will we ever get to Disney World, Daddy?"

"Never in a million years, Darlin'. Never in a million years."

Damn.....you guys stink.

It's not a terrible class until April. Very easy for Fran to pick up a grad transfer or JUCO PG to make this class very serviceable.

Hopefully I’m wrong

This is spot on....player rankings can certainly change by spring. If AU blows up, or the kid from Indiana...or if the Murray twins show the improvement of growing three inches, adding strength, and what skills/abilities that they showed playing against Iowa players all of their ratings could increase....

We could certainly still add someone else...I get it...I am disappointed with the ratings and apparent level of recruit...but we don't know yet how they will improve and mature between now and when they get to Iowa.

2 of Lickliter's 3 classes were better than this one.

Better:

2007 (Jeff Peterson, Jarryd Cole, Jake Kelly)
2008 (Devan Bawinkel, Aaron Fuller, Jermain Davis, Andrew Brommer, Anthony Tucker, Matt Gatens)

On par or worse than this one:

2009 (Cully Payne, Devon Archie, Eric May, Brennan Cougill)

Also, Lick had a good class in the bag in 2010 of Marble, McCabe, Brust and Larson before getting canned.

How do you know what class is better or the same. The 2020 class haven't played a game yet. Give it a rest or go cry in the corner. What the hell is wrong with some of you people. We didn't get one recruit so now you're ripping the guys we did get. The guys who actually want to play for Iowa.

To be fair I have been ripping Frans recruiting since 2014. I mean he has got a couple of good recruits but 10 years in you would want him getting solid recruits year in and year out

Iowa needs a big in this class bad. We are losing all but one of our big bodies this year and next. I feel safe with our 1-3’s .....

I completely disagree. They already have bigs coming in and they wont be needed to play big minutes until year 2.

Guards win games...that's what is needed.

Agreed, it's a guard's game. Having an interior presence is important, though, IMO. Foster would've been a big get.

No doubt on Foster.

However, the Murray boys will be big enough and they will be a year removed from high school, so by year 2 at Iowa they will each be 20 years old. I think they end up being quality players at Iowa.

One recruit?

That's cute ;)

Rankings wise, this class is worse than the 2007 and 2008 classes.

We didnt get one recruit? LOL!

This is a common theme from Fran. The chances of getting a highly ranked kid is extremely rare if the kid didnt grow up a Hawk fan or has the last name McCaffery. We cant even land the highly ranked kids that grew up Hawk fans at this point it appears.

Dont worry though, Fran tried really hard.

Our football and men's basketball programs are doubled coated in 100% pure mediocrity.
The above is pretty accurate from what I have watched the last 5 years.

Also, on paper this class looks rather modest. But, I am hopeful the Murray twins will surprise and Ulis will blossom into his brother to some extent. To be down on these guys before they play a second at Iowa is a bit rash IMO. At this point we can only hope they mature as basketball players in college.

Fans with oversized expectations have been the ruin of the Iowa program. Lets get rid of Good coaches and hope for the next big thing in Alford. As my wife says, things can always be worse
Yeah, she says that to justify being with you probably. Thanks for the insight, much more valuable than all those p5 coaching staffs that didn't offer.

Hope is not a strategy.
Agree, but maybe he does have a strategy. If not, he will be gone at some point and probably not soon enough for some folks.

If this 2020 class fails to mature and/or the Hawks BB goes south then he should be gone. And I am also growing impatient, but I do like the bloodlines of those three players and am hopeful that they will surprise.

Hard to sugarcoat this class. Hopefully something good happens, but that's going to mean a hell of a lot of over performing by all parties.
No I don't mind the class it would have been nice if we had Xavier Foster. That's the one thing that bugs me the kid was an Iowa fan his parents are Iowa fans but he was quoted as saying he thought Iowa State could do more for him. That's a hell of an indictment on our coaching staff

I’m not so sure either the 07 class and the 08 class were better ? Kick Gatens out because he was coming to iowa no matter who was coaching. The only guy that was solid was Cole.

I get the frustration with the FB program, but it is miles ahead of the BB program and has been for a long time.
It may appear that way but not that much difference....both play around .500 in conference and cant top the big Dawgs most of time but basketball actually plays people in the non conference and cant hide in the west. Basketball doesn't get a higher seed because the fans show up like football getting to better bowls than they deserve cuz of fans (only to have coach rip those "common fans" when they question him). It's much easier to make a bowl than tourney. Our standard 8-5 in football equals 18-12 in a 30ish game basketball schedule....very franlike.

If I was an Iowa Fan I would want Fran to do whatever he can to pick up Tyler Beard. Cmac is not even worth backing up JoeT at this point.

Murray twins are a huge reach. They are nowhere near P5 players. Fran was either impressed by Western Illinois interest in the twins, or he was trying to entice Foster by adding his friends, or he is just not good at recruiting.

If there is any solace, it’s that PMaC, Toussaint, and CJF look like a good freshman class. If we land Josh O—we at least get an athletic big that other Power 5 teams also wanted.

We got to do better in 2021. Need an impact player or two.

Why will recruiting be better for the class if 2021? Iowa will be recruiting off of a 20 plus loss season with a head coach over the age of 60.

I actually like the two guards in this class. Add them to C.J. and Joe T and it might be an upgrade on athleticism, ability to play D and create on offense. We’ve tried going big many years, but going small with Joe W and one post could be interesting. I know its hard to see when things look so grim but better guard potential is long overdue imo.

I always thought our facilities were hurting us in recruiting top talent but now not sure what is holding us back.
We once again struck out on every top target.
Prohm nailed two of his top three targets.
If we could just have landed the two legacy targets,Carton and X, the whole program would be jazzed.
This class could bury Fran.

Guess I didn’t realize Carton was a legacy?

Peterson had a Xavier offer and Kelly had offers from Virginia, ISU, Dayton and Penn State. Those are all better offers than any kid in the 2020 class has to this point.

You cant just kick a kid out of the class to help your argument unless you dont give credit to Fran for landing both his sons and Wieskamp.

But they still sucked

2 Honest questions -

1. Do you think we would be better off with the Dr. Tom era now than where we currently are?
2. How do you propose we become a winner? Who do you see drastically changing our outcomes, and besides Gonzaga, show me a program that has significantly rose out of mediocrity and maintained it and won at the highest levels?
