How do you feel about FanDuel/Draft Kings/Legalized Gambling?

I am curious to try some of these new online sportsbooks but I need them to legalize it in Florida first. I have been using an online offshore account for over 20 years. It's fine and has made a lot of improvements recently to keep up with the likes of Draft Kings but I don't think it has all the options that the newer apps have.

When I'm in Vegas I prefer to bet at the window rather than the MGM app.

I'm sure many of the people in here who are 'not a fan' of legalized gambling thinks we should bring back the 18th Amendment as well.

I don't do it,.. Seems dangerous for people to have immediate access to this stuff via smart phone..

This, feel like we're playing with fire here. Everyone knows these services don't make the big profits off reasonable gamblers. But addicts. Walking a fine line here.

I was talking to a friend of a friend that's a bookie a long while ago about paying people out. I ran through all of the scenarios that I could think of, big and small from the $25 bettor to the guys winning 5 or 6 figures at a time. Every scenario that I got out of my mouth was interrupted with, "nobody ever wins."

Basically even your best players over time are going to lose what they've gambled. There's no concern about takeout for the house. $100 gambled will eventually be $100 lost and in the house's pocket. Perform whatever accounting you want to show that the house paid out 48% (or whatever it is) for every dollar wagered and over time, the house pays out 0%.

I have money spread across 6 apps, I obviously enjoy betting on sports. But, I understand and agree with most concerns posted in this thread. Most people that are putting in bets on a game see it as a way to make a quick buck, and they are eventually wrong. It may take one bet, it may take 20, but eventually they’re “gotten”.

I remember, not too long ago, how taboo it was. Brent Musberger was the “daredevil” making references to the boys in the desert. Now, it’s everywhere and talked about freely. What a change!

I was in the car this morning and caught whatever show is on ESPN Radio- there had to be a good 15 minute block going over bets. In that sense it is a little weird, I guess.

Woke up this morning at 3 am. Left the TV on and about 2 hr blocks of infomercials featuring Draft Kings. That really isn't a good sign. At least to me. To each his own. I'm not a prude will do some edibles on occasions. But this seems to be pushing a bit too hard for my liking.

I lovvvvvvvvve it. Since it started I have bet around $35k in and I’m up around $300 over haha. I set limits and have never gone over my limits. I also take advantage of a lot of promos where it is “risk-free” or if you deposit you get X amount of dollars to play with.

For example I usually bet $25-$50 depending on how I like the bet and I usually set my limit to $100 a week. If I lose that all right away I don’t bet for another 2 weeks when I get paid but if I win I always remove what I put in and play with house money while taking profits. It’s all about being disciplined and responsible but I understand some individuals can’t handle it.

Better hope you don't get audited

I love it, football and college basketball are my two things I bet on. If you are smart about it it's not hard to win money at all. Sure you get bad beats here or there but for the most part you can do pretty good. Won $136 last night. Iowa basketball and the over is a sure thing btw.

Forgot to mention have a bunch of buddies that bet and we have a group chat to fill each other in on tips we pick up on sports shows. I don't have many friends that don't bet at this point.

I am not a fan, but its one of those things better above board. Probably should legalize hookers too.

For those that do not like online gambling advertisements, based on the Superbowl numbers, you will have to learn to live with it, as FanDuel and DraftKings are going to be rolling in money

I'm confident that 50,000/minute on the biggest game of the year is insignificant insofar as online gambling goes

I would disagree, while that amount of action is an outlier, the number of bets processed shows an appetite for the product. The product makes it easier for the customer to consume than ever before, which will lead to more and more casual players as additional states allow online sports gambling.

The money is clearly there, and so is the addiction. People are going to keep gambling now that they can literally access it anywhere/anytime, right at their finger tips. So yes, I do believe the bombardment of advertisements are here to stay. At least for the foreseeable future.

I don't do it but have friends that do regularly, especially in game bets. They don't do large amounts and really like it. It brings the state a lot of much needed tax money. I just heard on radio that Nebraska is legalizing it but putting all sorts of dumb restrictions, like you must be at a casino to bet, not on your phone, and you cannot bet on Nebraska or Creighton, etc when they are at home, only on the road.

I don't see the New York Racing Association or Santa Anita making wow headlines like that, even though they both hit that number for about 3 hours straight, 4-5x a week......and have for the last century. And I don't see anybody thinking there's an appetite for new/casual players

Do you have anything that confirms NYRA or Santa Anita are taking 50,000 bets per minute 3 or 4 times a week?
NYRA, from all avenues, took in 2.3 billion during 2022. How are they calculating the per minute? Based on the reported revenue futures are not calculated. 30 mins to post seems too long with revenue posted, so maybe 1 minute to post? The claim seems very high for number of races and collected revenue.

That said, it is ludicrous to compare gambling on horse racing and gambling on football. The premier event in US horse racing was viewed by 16 million people, which translates to an average Sunday afternoon game for NFL.

I do the fantasy portion... I think I have played on the same 50 bucks for about 5ish years now. I do take issue with these apps promoting/sponsoring sporting events. I used to belong to a league and the ante was 50 a year... this seems no different.

But the segments that go over betting lines and stuff, i tend to take issue with. Not because I'm against the betting, but the audience involved. That audience being underage kids... When I have to explain a money line to my 11 year old, I kinda take issue with it.

It's understandable that you have mixed feelings about the prevalence of sports gambling and the popularity of platforms like FanDuel and DraftKings. It's a topic that has generated a lot of attention and conversation in recent years.
While some people enjoy the thrill and entertainment that comes with sports gambling, it's essential to recognize the potential risks and addictive nature associated with it. Stories of individuals facing significant losses and debt serve as a reminder of the potential dangers.

I was hoping for a really good/fun meme when I googled "robot grave digger" to reference the bots digging up old threads, but there really wasn't much.

I'm not an active gambler, but I have nothing against legalization. People still gamble a lot, so why not legalize and regulate it? To be honest, I'm not that advanced in all that, and I don't know for sure what changes will be after legalization. I play online, and for me, it's the best thing. There are so many casinos to choose from, and they are so good. Some time ago, I came across this page https://australiacasino.reviews/casino-rocket/, which provided me very detailed and informative Rocket Casino Review which made me interested in playing there. I've played a few games, and they are indeed cool. There is also a loyalty program for regular players, and not many casinos offer such a thing, so that's for sure one playing. And what do you guys prefer, online or offline gambling?

Tbh, it's still crazy how the perception of gambling has changed over the years. I remember when it used to be kind of taboo, but now it's like everyone and their grandma is into it. Times sure have changed! It's really sad to hear about your friend's friend who got caught up in gambling and lost a ton of money. Addiction is a real issue when it comes to gambling, and it can really mess up people's lives. It's definitely something to be aware of and cautious about. Btw, if any of you are interested, I stumbled upon this article that lists the top 10 legal casino sites in Ontario. If you're curious, you can check it out https://ottawacitizen.com/sponsored/life-sponsored/here-are-the-top-10-legal-casino-sites-in-ontario. No pressure though, just thought it might be interesting.

Feel you on this topic. Sports gambling has blown up big time, especially with all those Draft Kings and Fan Duel ads bombarding us. It's like they're everywhere, right?
I'm with you, though. I've never been into sports gambling either, and it's kinda crazy how it went from having a stigma to being so commonplace. It's a whole different world now.
And you're right, it can get really dicey for some people. I've heard stories of folks losing big bucks and getting into serious trouble. It's scary how addictive it can be.
I'd recommend you check out https://uk.advfn.com/newspaper/advfnnews/69209/gambling-white-paper-falls-short-in-addressing-ads-issue/. There's some debate going on about the whole gambling ads situation.
