How long does session 1 normally last?

You'll probably have a couple hours between sessions, although that time might be shrinking with more teams in the B1G. I don't remember it having much effect last year though.

I'm not positive, but I don't think they wrestle any consolation matches the first session so this would mean they have 6 matches per weight in the round of 16 X 10 weights = 60 matches. They then wrestle the quarterfinals which is 4 matches per weight X 10 weights = 40 matches. This means they will wrestle a total of 100 matches on 4 mats or roughly 25 matches per mat. This would equate to approximately 2 1/2 dual meets per mat and one dual meet is usually 1 1/2 hours without the intermission! So if my math is correct and the number of matches is correct I come up with 3 3/4 hours for the first session! Someone else please chime in if you think I missed something or am totally off base! Go Hawks!

What are you? Some sort of weird engineer or math whiz? :eek: :D :D

I think you are pretty close though with your analysis.

I guess I was forgetting that for various reasons, we usually like to be back when doors open, so most people probably have 3-4 hours if they want.

I was told there would be no math.

120 bouts in Session 1, right? 6 in 1st Round Championships, 4 in 2nd Round Championships, 2 in 1st Round of wrestle-backs. 12 x 10 weight Classes =120

I don't think they have any wrestle-backs in the 1st session, but if they do where would you come up with 2 matches per weight???

6 guys drop down from Round 1 of the Championship Bracket. 2 have byes, the other 4 wrestle in 2 matches.

Pretty sure it's done in session 1. And, of course, if any team doesn't field a full 10, it will take away 1 championship, and 1 wrestle-back match per missing wrestler in session 1.

Iowa and Northwestern duel took almost 30 minutes. Also dont forget something should be figured for some mismatches with highest seed wrestling lowest seeds, should be a lot of pins and techs. If someone could provide a definite answer on the wreslebacks I should be able to get it narrowed down to the minute. Quick question,is that guy that called the pin for Nico vs Klimera working this tournament? If he is, you can knock off a few more minutes off. Also if McCuctheon gets behind, i think you could take off a few more minutes cause im sure he will mff in order try to protect his Flo ranking.

Thanks for the explanation and that makes sense! Just not sure if this happens during the 1st Session or the 2nd Session??? It would make sense to have this during the 1st Session so these wrestlers get the same amount of rest as the quarterfinal losers who they will face in the 2nd round of consolations! We need somebody that has experience with the brackets and order of matches!!!

Just got around to watching that meet the other night, and man, are you right about that. Maybe in freestyle, but not even remotely close in folkstyle. Klimara was in utter disbelief that the ref called that.

If that was a pin, Mike Evans pinned Chris Perry in the national semis about 30 times.

I dont know how much stock I would put into it, but trackwrestling has every team except Michigan State with a full lineup. It has MSU with 9 guys listed so that should only reduce the number of matches by 2.

Do they wrestle 9th-12th place bracket Saturday night after everything else is done? I thought thats when they did it last year. I believe there should only be 2 weights that have it (133 and 174). No weights have 8 allocations so i think that means no need to wrestle extra matches to determine the next man in or top wildcard candidates at any weights. This entire last paragraph is more me asking if all of that info is correct so dont take it as law yet.

According to NCAA for allocations:
Secondary criteria (bronze criteria). Wrestlers that meet two or more of the 'bronze' criteria will be labeled bronze standard and eligible for at large selection.
Standards include:
.700 overall winning percentage,
top 33 RPI (taken after the qualifying tournaments),
top 33 coaches ranking;
one win against a wrestler receiving AQ via an earned position (preallocated);
qualifying event placement one below AQ.

A win against a wrestler receiving automatic qualification must be against an opponent in a qualifying tournament that had an earned automatic qualification through a gold or silver standard.

So, at 133 and 174, the will wrestle for 9th to determine who the AQ is...however, if the person who finishes 10th was someone that earned the weight class AQ through gold/silver standard...they are eligible to be selected as a wild card by the committee...

likewise at the other weights, if someone earn the AQ allocation for the weight, but fails to finish in the AQ spots, they must have finished the next highest spot to be eligible for a Wild Card.

This is a little outdated, but provides good insight: Mock Selections

From an operational calculation perspective for Session 1:

assumptions:
total matches = 100
number of mats = 4
expected matches per mat= 25 matches
average total match time (including stoppage, delays, intervals, overtimesetc.) = 10 minutes

25 matches x 10minutes = 4 hours and 10 minutes

:)

This is probably generous though as 10 minutes is probably on the high side. but it made for easy calculation lol
