President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will travel to the Supreme Court Friday to pay their respects to the late Justice Antonin Scalia, but they will not attend his funeral Saturday.

Scalia’s body will lie in repose in the Great Hall of the court Friday, and the building will be open to the public to allow visitors to honor the justice, who died last Saturday at 79.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said the Obamas will not attend Scalia’s Saturday funeral at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. Vice President Biden and his wife, Jill, will be present instead.

Earnest would not say whether anything was on the president's schedule that prevented him from going to the funeral.

Man!! I hate to say this, but presidents on both sides of the aisle have not made it to SCOTUS judge's funerals from the other side.

I'll give him a pass as long as he sends a representative from the WH. I'd say that's fair.

That's ridiculous. Biden can go to some appeals court judge's funeral, but the POTUS should attend a Supreme Court justice's funeral and pay his respects.

The official duty of the President is to attend the public ceremony. A funeral is a private, family event. Only because this is a political figure is the White House sending anyone. I don't think it should be an issue if the President and First Lady do not attend what should be an event for family and friends.
Just because I am who I am, I'll say I wonder how many people will show up at the funeral purely to be seen on TV?

Its not like Obama is blowing Scalia off...he will view the body in repose at the Supreme Court. Obama could dig the grave and fill in the dirt after the vault was lowered and his political opponents woud still bitch.
