First, I must thank those who wished me well when the news broke about my selection to the 2017 Glen Brand HOF class as the Russ Smith Community Impact Award winner. In the next day or two I will outline just how important my Hawkeye Report friends have been to the success of Wrestling for Life and, therefore, the role you have all played in getting kids involved with wrestling.
We set a record last year for tickets given to Hawkeye events. Two things factored into the record - very generous friends who helped us get 363 kids and chaperones into Grapple on the Gridiron and a weak home schedule. Many were less than enthusiastic about the Hawks wrestling Indiana and other lower tier Big Ten teams and we ended up receiving many tickets. They were all put to good use.
This year will be a challenge. First of all, I want to give away 1,000 Hawkeye tickets to members of kids' wrestling clubs, middle school teams and youth organizations like Boys and Girls Club. That will be a new record. Second, the home schedule is so attractive that donations of potentially unused tickets should decline significantly below last year's level. My goal is to give away 300 tickets each for Penn State, Ohio State and Iowa State. The other 100 should come easily from Wisconsin and the Iowa City Duals.
I know - you don't want to give up a season ticket to witness the Hawks battle the Nittany Lions or to see NCAA, World and Olympic champion, Kyle Snyder go against Sam Stoll. BUT - can you dig deep and help us get 1,000 extra kids and their chaperones into CHA this year? Can you buy a couple of extra tickets to those hot meets and send them to us? We buy tickets at the group rate, so could you donate $40 to help us get 5 more tickets? Your kindness will let kids experience the excitement of Carver Hawkeye Arena wrestling.
