Hwt.?

Any insights on heavyweight?

Yeah, we don't have a legitimate HWT. Holloway will be lucky to qualify and unlikely to score points even if he does.

Hopefully Stoll can make it back next year but to expect a lot out of a HWT with 2 ACL injuries is wishful thinking. Otherwise we'll have to hope Holloway really, really improves before next year or roll out a true frosh.

If it were you wouldn't you want the chance to wrestle at least one time in front of the hawkeye fans. I know i wouldn't care who it was if given the chance.
I wrestled from age 4 to Sr in HS. I took 3 years off at college and went out my SR year because Luther didn't have a true heavyweight. I went 0-8 on Varsity and still lettered with a .500 overall record. My claim to fame is that i had the #2 HWT (eventual Champion) in the country on his back for a 2 count before getting tilted the same way as Faraan to a tech fall. You're darn right I would want that chance against anyone because i can say that I wrestled for my college.

Oh my don't let JohnBasedow hear that - I was "stupid" for expressing concern about Hwt with two ACLs . Same leg o_O

Being an ACL tear recipient myself I can relate. Even after 1 tear I can't imagine not being limited by it, but to do it again would make me very concerned about always having problems with that knee. Especially if he is using his patella tendon to make the repair. Typically you have two choices. Use a cadaver tendon screwed in to replace the ACL or use part of your patella tendon. I know I used my patella and even it still hurts after 3 years. I am older than Sam, but I'm not optimistic about it. At least not next season.

Are You saying you still have eligibility? I see more opportunity awaiting you.:D

Is there any chance we can get a hwy. transfer or top recruit for next year? Seems like there should be a fairly good hwy. wanting to go to an Iowa...

3rd option is to have a hamstring allograft for the reasons you stated. I had this done & could see recovering from it quickly. But as you pointed out, I would be fearful of it & it would be limiting for a long time after.

i am following Spooner's train of thought...Are there any JUCO Heavies out there that we may be interested in?? maybe a stopgap that would fit a pressing need until we get our young guy indoctrinated into our line up??

I don't agree. There's nothing to suggest that he'd be a better option than Holloway.

Not sure I'd say "nothing." He had better accomplishments and accolades coming out of HS than Holloway. It isn't everything but it is hardly nothing.

same thing happened to my son 2 years ago. his reward for hanging in there at iowa was a match with mr. deringer from okie state. and if you ask him he will tell you he would not have traded that experience nor his 1 year in the line up last year for anything. :)

You are correct that there is no way to know if he would have been better than Holloway but Bradley was a true heavyweight coming out of High School (not a converted 197 pounder) and ranked #7 by Intermat and #2 by Flo wrestling (see link below for more information) I think it is safe to assume that Bradley would have been expected to by Sam's backup and the future of that weight class after Stoll's departure. I love Steven Holloway but I don't think it was ever in the cards for him to be our heavyweight. Having Bradley would give the team a lot more options. It does indeed hurt not having him here.

Yep. Bradley would most certainly be a better HWT., and I'm confident Holloway makes for a better 197 lber than Cashe Wilcke. In hindsight, recruiting Aaron Bradley was one of the worst things Brands has done in his tenure, IMO. Granted, it's not Bradley's fault that Stoll can't stay healthy, or we didn't have better options at 197, but if he's there it changes the game considerably, and certainly for the better for Iowa Wrestling.

Bradley was the last big man of his high school class to commit. IIRC, Tom had tried to recruit Brooks Black, and was unsuccessful. Bradley committed late in the spring of his senior year -- after winning Pennsylvania states. The following year, Tom went after Stoll and got him. I agree it would have been great to have Bradley as a back up. But I don't think it was the case that Tom made a mistake in recruiting Bradley. There were no other quality heavies to recruit Bradley's senior year by the time he signed up, and then once Stoll came on board, the top tier heavyweights coming out of high school were going to look at programs other than Iowa rather than sit behind Stoll for three years.

I am not confident at all that Holloway can even make 197 anymore. He's far from a full size HWT but looks like a monster compared to a 197 pounder.

But is that because he's wanted as a backup HWT. or because he just likes to eat? I think it's the former.

In an interview they other day, it was said Holloway's weight was 220. 197 for next year is not out of his reach...and that's where he should go He cannot add enough good weight to go toe-to-toe with guys like Nevills

The mistake part is that Bradley never wrestled a match for Iowa (that's why I said in hindsight....). Other than that, the strategy was sound for sure. Nate Skon was a mistake too, just in a different manner at a weight easier to obtain more guys.

Bradley not showing up after a 2 year Mission, set off a chain of events that now has Iowa with not one, but two undersized participants on the back end of their lineup. Neither of whom appears to be capable AT THOSE WEIGHTS of adding to any point total we would need to win a Team National Title.

Is it possible there is another less cynical reason, like "he's growing and maturing" for instance?

That said, I have no inside info. Just thinking aloud because he's certainly bigger than he has been. If he can still make 197, great.

Of course there are any number of reasons, but the logical one to me is that we have no backup HWT., and we have a guy wrestling there that is gonna be out for some time when the season starts. So insert next likely guy - congratulations Mr. Holloway!

So they tell Holloway and Wilcke to plan on moving up and getting spanked in the process (they may have left that last part out................).

We have a top 10 heavy coming in but I don't think he will be ready. A transfer would be ideal. JUCO?

I think our best bet is currently on the team in either Holloway or if Brantly wants to come back. But since you trolled me, I'll take the "who could wrestle Hwt next year that isn't currently on the team" bait.

Wrestler this Board can support
LutherAce. Petition NCAA for a 2nd year of wrestling. He was smart enough to get into Luther College. Just sayin'

Wrestlers currently at Junior Colleges..
Thomas Petersen is the #1 ranked Hwt. He's @ Iowa Central
Stephen Boone is the #3 ranked Hwt. He's @ Iowa Western
Gary Whitaker #7 @ Ellsworth

Wrestler currently at Division III
Lance Evans is the #2 ranked Hwt @ Wartburg College. He's a JR from Solon, Iowa and started at Iowa. Evans beat Holloway at the Luther Open 12-5. This message board has a long history of thinking that Wartburg's upper weights want to transfer to Iowa for their senior season so I am required by Board Protocol to include him.

Wrestler as a student at Iowa
Sam Cook @ 228 lbs is redshirting on the football team.

Cook, an elite all-state tailback and two-time state wrestling champion, picked the Hawks and the gridiron over a full-ride wrestling scholarship package from the University of Oklahoma. The multi-sport Dodger standout will be a preferred walk-on at Iowa. He had also considered a similar offer from Urban Meyer’s Ohio State Buckeyes.

”I just feel great about it,” said Cook, who ranks fourth in Class 4A history with 4,882 career rushing yards. ”When someone asks now, I can say with pride that I’m going to be an Iowa football player.

The coaches need to send the easter bunny to happy valley for some growth hormone during the off season.
