Wife has a conference in Pittsburgh in September. We will be leaving on a football Saturday. We would want to avoid football traffic anyway but also want to do something different than the Interstates which we have traveled so often before. We are thinking of taking Hwy 24 East out of Peoria and then 30 after that until Eastern Ohio. (We are starting from Des Moines area.) Any opinions on the route are welcome.
Thx

Go for it. See America. I take 24 all the time from I-39 to I-65. I used 30 last year to go most of the way across Indiana. A little slower at times, but I have no doubt that bypassing Chicago when we visit my wife's family in Indiana and using 24 eases my stress load.

FWIW the past two summers, including heading down to the Texas Gulf Coast last month, we have taken highways when we can and I would guess it adds a couple of hours especially if none of the highways are divided.
