In the 1930s in the midst of a terrible recession, turning into a depression, they pass the Smoot Hawley tariffs. These unprecedented tariffs were terrible for the country and pushed the depression into the Great depression.

Trump just passed tariffs that even dwarf the ones that pushed us into the great depression. The economy is already starting to collapse. Is this what he means by making America great again? Is that a reference to the Great Depression?

America has had a few "official" greats in its past. The Great Depression is certainly one. America also had several Great Awakenings. WWI was called the Great War until WWII came along, but that wasn't uniquely our war. What else?
