I can understand being out-horsed, out-techniqued, but out-endured?

Strength is often genetic. PSU is known for top notch technique. But how is it that PSU wrestlers have indefatigable gas tanks and we don't?

What's obvious is that in most matches their guy's had more stamina, and their strength did not decline as the match went on.

I would like to understand why. Do our guys not work as hard? Are our endurance exercises inferior? Is our nutrition lacking?

Come to think of it, I don't even know of a Gable team that had that level of energy across the lineup by the end of a match.

What on God's earth is their advantage? Secret?

@Gobblin, I see you put a laughing emoticon with my post. I respect your opinions. Am I seeing what is not there? What do you see?

Adderall is what is rumored because of the Brooks testing fail. It turns out he has a doctor's note to use it to help him focus in school. Is the testing the same for college? Is Adderall ok with a doctor's note in college wrestling? I honestly don't know. If it is legal with a prescription in college I doubt you would have to disclose it to anyone. It is banned for a reason. Could it help give a wrestler an unlimited gas tank? Probably. Is it helping any, some, or none of the guys at Penn State focus in school? I have no idea, but some who know way more than me seem to think so. I apologize for firing up the bat signal!

FWIW, the reporting was wrong; it wasn’t adderall. It was something else for ADHD though (vyvanse). When this all went down, it came out that some ridiculously high % of collegians and student-athletes were on ADHD drugs. Discuss as you wish, but consider a number of your guys may be using it too.

PEDs.

And sometimes the match comes "easier" to the guy with better technique.
for example it takes a lot of energy to escape from a college folk ride.
Not if you kick them in the nuts.

No amount of willpower short of shaving it all off as a way to "eliminate any potential weakness" will outlast a steady diet of blows to the testicles..............

Combination of weight training and nutrition. Our guys looked sucked down often times and smaller. Psu has something figured out
PSU bodys look fuller than most. My guess is less weight cutting. Also said in earlier post. Its 100% evident they train much smarter than our guys based on leaderships mentality. They dont out work our guys they just train smarter. Its sn absolute science now a days. Unfotunately psu leadership smart, scientific and mentally superior than our leadership.

I think we know the answer, PEDs, Roids, the Juice. Just look at guys like Stallrocci, Kerk, Haines, Kasak. Iowa has zero guys that look like that. There is nothing natural with what’s going on at Penn State. Always out strength, never tire, and that isn’t just against Iowa it’s every team they wrestle. Carl knew he couldn’t sustain dominance without an advantage. He uses them all.

Yeah they are the only guys that “train smarter” no one else has figured out how to train smarter. This is scandal U we are talking about

Most dont dome do but not like psu. Proofs in results. Less injuries too

While PSU staff will let athletes tailor their workouts, Cael’s said that they generally use wrestling itself to train their endurance rather than massive running and gym-type loads. Some kids hardly lift.

Adderall is prescription meth, sooooo......
Merk cooks would embarass this guy. 🤣🤣

You’re a blowhard that attaches your self worth to PSU wrestling and has no clue about the inner workings of your own program.

Their guys definitely pull a bunch of weight. Starocci was a 174 last year and looked the same size at Olympic trials as a full sized 197 lb Trent Hidlay. He looked bigger than Keck in their All star classic match. Beau Bartlett has talked about his cut being tough. SVN is a big 149. Kasak looks big at 157 and missed making weight at 70kg this summer. Mesenbrink doesn’t look big, I’ll give you that one. Haines looks big and is cutting to make 174 and keep in mind that he was pulling a ton of weight to make 157 last year. Barr, Mesenbrink and Kerk are the only ones that are not pulling a big cut.

What an absurd comment. If you take an honest look at Iowa's lineup, it is filled with guys that have that certain bodybuilder look, much more so than any PSU wrestler.

Caliendo, Kennedy, Arnold and Buchanan all look like they could be contestants in Mr. Olympia, not to mention the backup 157 that filled in for Teemer that looks like a human bowling ball.

Even the "smaller" guys like Parco and Teemer were every bit as big, if not bigger, than their PSU opponent.

Is it coincidence that in 2020 and 2021 our conditioning, aggression, offense, match and mat awareness, strategy was so much better and therefore we were the best team?

Perhaps the problem with Iowa's endurance is there is too much an emphasis on a certain type of weightlifting regiment that doesn't necessarily translate to being stronger on the mat. Then add in the fact larger muscles use more oxygen and you may have your answer.

Aside from that, Iowa traveling for a Friday night dual to PA doesn't help and the fact Cael has his guys train to peak twice a year, one being the Iowa dual and the other NCAAs.

I believe PSU farms out some of their off season conditioning and weight gain programs by sending wrestlers to The Treigning Lab in California. Admittedly, I thought this played a big role in their success.

Somebody mentioned science, The Lab’s motto is “Success Through Science”.
If memory serves, Iowa’s program was following suit but we’re clearly not seeing the same results.

Have we not added bombardment (dodgeball) to our arsenal of conditioning exercises?

lol you mentioned three guys that have been on campus for four months. Those guys certainly don’t look like that. Arnold is same way as he was in high school. Kennedy lol cmone on

This is just a comparison to Iowa. It’s literally every team they wrestle against.

This is not just an Iowa problem against PSU. The issue that we (and everyone else) face against PSU is that they have the absolute best hand fighting skills in college wrestling. When you win the hand fight, you control the pace of the match and your opponent is reactive to your movements. Being reactive takes much more of a toll on your endurance. Additionally, much of the scoring they do from neutral is generated off of reattacks and low risk techniques with quick finishes. It’s all part of Cael’s push-push-pull hand fight series that many of his wrestlers employ.

Anyone that has ever swam, ran or lifted weights knows the better than technique the less fatigue you experience. It’s not rocket science PSU has much better technique. Just watch the takedown attempts by both Caliendo and Kennedy. Kennedy especially couldn’t execute the crackdown and then Haines did it to him soon after. Better technique equal less fatigue equals a wrestler fresher in the 3rd. Also PSU wrestlers are just so calm and confident in their positions. They don’t rush the finish on takedowns. Laugh all you want about dodgeball and PEDs. PSU hammers the basics all day long such as hand fighting and they roll all the time to test and try out positions they could encounter in the match.

Maybe it's a secret only the top dogs get to know, so it can't be passed on, lol.

Not unheard of. Whitey Ford used to keep the illegal, tacky substance that he secretly applied to baseballs in his deodorant container. Only Mickey Mantle, Whitey's best friend, was in the know. Everyone else had no idea, including Yogi Berra, the catcher, who one day helped himself to Whitey's deodorant only to find that he'd glued his armpit hair to his body.

It’s no secret, psu wrestlers share their secret in every interview. They got the guy upstairs watching over them, they are led by the most straight edged virtuous coach therefore they get that extra help from above.

Sure wish one of those disappointed, dejected former PSU wrestlers would share their secret sauce recipe.

I could use a little pick me up these days. I keep slowing down more each day. Not sure how much longer I can hold on till someone spills the beans. Cmon, tell us!!!

Add lillendahl davis haines kasak van ness. All look full and stamina shows it. Yes every yr 1-2 of the starters has to pull hard to get in line up but in general they don't cut a ton. Its manageable to insure constant progress/improvement.

Me, a blowhard? I attach my self worth solely to my own talents and accomplishments. This is just for fun. I’m not one of those guys that puffs my chest for things others have done. I’m just a fan, and among the best guests you have here. Deal with it.

Both of my college are kids are on ADHD meds, and they’re definitely not D1 athletes. It’s like a generational thing for this generation.
